THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME— NOVEMBER 14, 2021

As you know, a Community Meeting to discuss the Passionist Sisters’ Convent and the inclusion of Afghani refugees was held on Wednesday, November 10. As I write this bulletin, the meeting has not taken place, so I do not have anything yet to report.

Every year, the Diocese of Lansing asks parishes to report their Mass Counts during the month of October. It is evident that the COVID pandemic has taken a major hit upon our parish. In 2019, before the pandemic struck, we were averaging 451 people a weekend during the month of October. During October, 2021, we averaged 302 people. This is an extraordinary decline, and it is very concerning. Granted, we have had a number of funerals over the past year. However, this trend cannot go on. Unfortunately, those who are away cannot hear this news unless they are reading the bulletin online. Please spread the word to those you have not seen in a while – their presence in our community celebration of the Holy Eucharist is very much needed. Christ the King Sunday is next weekend, and it represents the last week of the liturgical year. Advent follows on November 28. The Season of Advent always comes quickly, and it takes us by surprise. How will you make this year’s Advent a season of preparation and renewal? Veterans Day was celebrated on November 11. We want to thank everyone who served in the Armed Forces of the United States. May God bless you and your families for your sacrifice and service!

Lansing Catholic High School Christmas Concerts

Celebrate the beginning of Advent with us at Lessons & Carols on Wednesday, December 1 at 7 p.m. Join us in our St. John Paul the Great Chapel for a scriptural and musical reflection on Advent presented by the Lansing Catholic Choir.

The Lansing Catholic Band will be performing their Instrumental Christmas on Wednesday, December 8 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Both events are free, open to the public, and great ways to get in the Advent mood.

Help Support Your Parish

Scrip is not just for tuition. If your family is not currently supporting a student you can still purchase scrip gift cards for your holiday gift giving and support your parish! The proceeds from you choosing “church fund” go directly to the parish to help with the day to day running of our parish - like the water bill, or the supplies for liturgy, or the maintenance of our elevator, or simply keeping the lights on and the heat up! If you have any questions just stop by the scrip table after Mass and we will be glad to help. Thank you for your support of St. Therese Parish!

There are many ways you can give of your time and talent to bless the St. Therese community. A couple of ways to help with Religious Education: Children’s Liturgy of the Word - We are looking for one more shepherd to assist with Children’s Liturgy of the Word on Sundays. This ministry brings the Mass to our children preK-4th grade at the 10:30 Sunday Masses in a special way! The commitment is once a month. RED Group assistants - Helpers are needed for our RED Groups! Our goal is to have an assistant for each of our groups, and the commitment is mid-September through May from 11:45am to 1pm, 2-3 Sundays a month. High school students, these are great ways to get service hours!

Angel Tree Ministry has given us 2 families, 4 children! Angel Tree Christmas™ equips churches and other organizations to serve incarcerated parents by providing a pathway for strengthening and restoring their relationships with their children and families. Angel Tree Christmas mobilizes local churches and community organizations to give hundreds of thousands of children a gift, the Gospel message, and a personal message of love on behalf of their incarcerated parent.

If your family would like to adopt one of these families as your Christmas Giving Opportunity, please contact Dave at 487-0478, 331-5765, [email protected].

Tri-County TRIAD promotes older adult safety and reduces the fear of crime

that older adults often experience.

Our local chapter is firmly rooted in the community. The volunteers of TRIAD serve and enrich the lives of older adults through education and outreach. Our chapter serves the tri-county region of Ingham, Eaton, and

Clinton counties.

Please find the Tri-County TRIAD, donation envelopes on the table or the Advent Giving Tree in the vestibule.

This installment is by Father Chas Canoy, Pastor of Saint John the Evangelist in Jackson and a member of the Committee, on providing the priests of our parishes a peer community in which to live and pray, care and be cared for, whether or not living under the same roof. Our Adult Faith Formation

Now, to the Second to the Last (33rd) Sunday of Ordinary Time! “The end is coming! The end is coming! “… the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light and the stars will be falling from the sky and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.” Concurrently, “And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory,…” Have you seen signs of that the apocalypse is near at hand? (I know that

many people living in coastal areas certainly see their world, as they know it, coming to an end as the waters approach their homes.)

Have you seen signs that the Son of Man is near at hand, too? Whom do you know that is having their world shaken and could benefit

knowing that the Son of Man is always at hand for them? We All are in the ministry of inviting other adults, young and not—so-young, into a relationship with Jesus Christ through US his Church, to become “followers of the Way.” Please call Dave @ 487-0478 or 331-5765 and let’s have the conversation to help your family member/friend embrace Jesus Christ.

Advent giving tree

Even though the Advent season is still a few weeks away, your opportunity to select gift tags from our Advent Giving Tree begins this weekend! We hope this extra time allows you to take advantage of the special sales events that typically take place before the beginning of the Advent season. On Saturday, December 18th, we will be providing a food basket and gifts to at least 46 families. We can use your help to make this a Blessed Christmas for these families. How can you help?

•Take a tag from the tree and buy the gift. Each tag on the Giving

Tree has an identifier on it for a specific person so we ask that you return both the NEW gift AND the ornament to make it easier for us to sort gifts.

•We’d appreciate it if you could please return both the gift and the

tag by Sunday, December 12th. This will give us some time to go after specific items that did not get purchased.

•Donate some tape, bows and/or tags. We still have lots of

wrapping paper! •Donate some hats, gloves and scarves. We will be serving at

least 76 adults and 114 children this year. There are no tags on the tree for these but we know we can count on your generosity!

•Bakers, we need at least 50 dozen cookies for our food baskets!

These can be dropped off in the Social Room of the Church beginning Monday, December 13th through noon on Friday, December 17th.

•Assembling food baskets and distributing gifts – two awesome

Advent experiences!

Gift drop off deadline: Sunday, December 12th Cookies can be dropped off by: Friday, December 17th at Noon (social room) Food Basket preparation: Friday, December 17th @ 6:30 p.m. (gym) Christmas Program: Saturday, December 18th @ 10:00 a.m. (gym)
