The parade started around ten- thirty AM with the USMC Honor Guard leading the way. Marching with the honor guard was Lt. Col. Ronnie L. Goode, ll. They were followed by the John I. Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty were then followed by the Banner Ladies and the Pom-pom ladies. This year we were doubly honored to have two trucks from Fire Rescue #32 join our parade. They are always there for us. After everyone was settled in their places our ceremony began with Howard Gold singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The Invocation was then given by the Rev. A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT

LOU RODINO

Dear Poinciana residents,

We had a few days of worry, but in the end,

it was worth it. The sun didn’t shine, but it

didn’t rain on our parade. The Ninth An-

nual Poinciana Country Club Memorial Day

Parade and Ceremony went off without a

hitch. The parade started around ten-

thirty AM with the USMC Honor Guard

leading the way. Marching with the honor

guard was Lt. Col. Ronnie L. Goode, ll.

They were followed by the John I. Leonard

High School Band, directed by Milton Jose-

lyn. Next our Veterans marched and rode

in carts decorated by Kathy Graves’ volun-

teers. The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of

Troop 208 came next. Uncle Sam and Lady

Liberty were then followed by the Banner

Ladies and the Pom-pom ladies. This year

we were doubly honored to have two trucks

from Fire Rescue #32 join our parade. They

are always there for us.

After everyone was settled in their places

our ceremony began with Howard Gold

singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”. The

Invocation was then given by the Rev. Rob-

ert Cove. Howard Gold and the Rev. Robert

Cove are residents of Poinciana. I gave the

opening remarks and introduced our key-

note speaker, Lt. Col. Ronnie L. Goode, ll.

Ted Cott read the names of our fallen veter-

ans since last Memorial Day. Taps were

then played, and the Flag was raised by my-

self and members of the Boy Scouts. Ted

Cott gave the closing remarks and the cere-

mony was closed with Howard Gold singing “God Bless America”.

A good time was had by all, and those who bought a ticket had a wonderful All-American lunch in Mel’s Way Bistro.

All is peaceful here at the Ambassador. It

hasn't been so hot that we are unable to gath-

with our neighbors and catch up with what is

going on in each other's lives.

Sadly, one of our residents, Sydell had to

spend a few days in the hospital. We all wish

her a speedy recovery.

Hope you all enjoyed our Memorial Day Pa-

my car was sent ahead of me and Pat was in the hospital, there were so many offers of lifts to the store and visits to the hospital. Two peo-ple gave me the use of their car. There were lots of check-ins as well. It was wonderful. I did thank people, but I would add how support-ed Pat and I felt. I think it's what makes Bird-ie special.” We are pleased to report that Pat is doing well.

Of course, the usual hits and misses continue every day on Birdie Drive. Did you know that the Fire Safety Specialist of the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Bureau, Safety Services inspect all our buildings every year? And there is no notice. I’m very pleased to report that as I was signing the inspection reports the inspec-tor said “You run a really tight ship around here, just minor problems” I said thank you. Some fire doors and trash room chutes were not closing properly. They have already been serviced by Alex. New signs are needed to indi-cate emergency equipment locations, they are on order. Also, a late inspection date on the fire standpipe risers is now scheduled. We try to stay on top of things like this all year round.

Well that’s it from Poinciana 3, Birdie Drive for this month. ◄

POINCIANA PLACE

CONDOMINIUM 3 by Ira Beckoff

Well it will be the middle of June when your reading this newsletter and the great migra-tion from Poinciana 3 has just about completed itself. All the snow birds have left their nests and are heading home to their alternate uni-verse.

As usual the return home trip always encoun-ters some strange or unexpected last-minute emergencies, Owners need help as they pack their cars and get ready for that last moment at Poinciana 3 before the trip home begins. Usually it’s a small matter like helping carry cartons or baggage down from upstairs or help-ing to get the hurricane rollups that are stuck at the top of the frame rolled down and locked securely against the hurricane winds. Or it could be discovering that your water valve won’t shut off and hold tight and you need an emergency plumber to prevent your apartment from getting flooded when you’re not here. And there are always those strange car emergen-cies. Why does the car battery die on the morn-ing of the day you’re supposed to drive back to New York?

Those are small emergencies and can usually be taken care of easily. But what do you do when your car has already been shipped back to New York And you’re planning to get a ride from a neighbor to the airport. Then your hus-band suddenly has an emergency medical con-dition that requires a short hospitalization and cancels your travel plans. That’s when it’s nice to know that you live in a community that will quickly extend a helping hand to friends and neighbors. Pat and Sue Bartolone had such an event happen. They were so thankful for the help they were offered and received from fel-low Poincianians that she sent me an email and asked me to tell her story it in this news-letter.

Sue wrote:

“Hi from rainy New York, If you feel it would

be appropriate in the next newsletter, why

don't you find a way to mention the strong com-

munity support people at Birdie have. When

BARCLAY BITS by Ina Baron

Quiet is good. Not much happening here at Barclay. Our baby birds have grown up and have left the area. We now have a new batch we are watching. I dislike talking about myself, but the only news worthy item was that both of my daugh-ters came down to help me celebrate a mile-stone Birthday and Mother's Day. The weekend started by being treated to a Spa Day at The Eau. Fantastic experience. Next day was fol-lowed by dinner at Prime Catch where the rest of local and out of town family joined in the cel-ebration. Mother's Day was a dinner, again at a restaurant on the Inter coastal. It was great having almost all my family here. With the summer heat approaching, some of our residents are heading to a cooler climate – Safe Travels. We look forward to the return of our Snow Birds in October. ◄

CHAI HADASSAH

OF POINCIANA by Marilyn Alpern

Summer is almost here, and the snowbirds have all left. Our last card party of the season was held in May. Approximately 40 of us went to Brookdale on Hadjes Drive for a wonderful luncheon and afternoon of Mah Jongg, Canasta, and Rummikub.

We'll be looking forward to the return of the snowbirds in the fall and the start of a busy new season. We are always looking for new programs to have and places to go for day trips. If anyone has any new ideas that they would like to recommend, we are open to suggestion. Just let us know. Call Annette Bluestein at (561) 641-1381 or Diane Femia at (561) 249-1886.

Ros Serraita is still here offering her selection of cards and trees. Her number is (561) 966-3192. Have a wonderful summer everyone and see you in the fall! ◄

You will need to create an account with your email and a password of your choice. We will verify that you are a resident and approve your account. You will then have access to all required documents, reports, minutes and up-dated information.

Weekly BBQ has been suspended for the sum-mer and will resume sometime in September. Please check the bulletin board in your lobby. The elevator cabs are in the process of being in-stalled so the elevators that were begun first will be finished as soon as possible. We are very fortunate, on the advice of our professional ele-vator consultant, we didn’t begin work on the

single elevator buildings first. He stressed that it was important to do work on the 2-elevator buildings first in case there was any type of delay, which there was. Once the 3 el-evators in the 2-elevator buildings have been completed, the crews will work on the eleva-tors in the single elevator buildings. Please note that we have contracted for overtime la-bor in those buildings so the time the eleva-tors will be out of service is as short as possi-ble. Please check the notices in your lobby about how to prepare for these times. We reg-ularly post updated schedules in your lobby and on our website as soon as we receive the information from the elevator company. You will always know as soon as we know. Your patience is greatly appreciated for this much needed improvement.

Our grounds look great, the rain has certainly made a difference. If you haven’t returned your completed 2018 census form, please do so immediately, along with a copy of a current driver’s license or passport. This is a requirement of all resi-dents. We are required by to complete this census to maintain our 55+ status. To our year-round residents, please continue to support our Golf Course and Mel’s Way Bis-tro. They bring life to our community and we thank them.

This is an ongoing daily job with nowhere near enough rewards. Thanks to Harvey Tabachnick and Wayne Farrow for their contributions to the pool area, and a thanks to Marlene Meyers who has taken on the responsibility for looking into our future contract with Comcast, a job. Also, thanks to Geri Feldman for his additional input to the Board on matters that arise.

To all the residents that remain to sit out the summer have a great one. To all our snowbirds enjoy your summer and we hope to see every-one next year.

Remember our weekly barbeque on Wednes-days is still on and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible, Have a great summer. ◄

HAMLET

by Russ Donnelly

Well it's finally here, the sad time of the year when all our snowbird friends have moved on to their destinations north, we wish them a most wonderful summer and as usual will be looking ahead to their return.

At the Hamlet things continue to march on. The board, as you may know by now, has solicited Sundeck surfaces to redo our elevator and mail-box areas which have shown to have failed the test of time. This is a summer project which will eventually lead to the resurfacing of the entire first level causeway, which is showing its age due to sprinkler systems and heavy traffic. The eleva-tor areas have shown the most wear and will be done first. The result will lead to considerations for the rest of the areas. Sundeck was picked for this project based on past performance and price. They did the pool area for which the board has received positive responses and have extended their expertise and pricing to the problem areas noted.

This coming July the Board will start to take on the new Budget for 2019. Future considerations for the total roof replacement will be a priority this year. We are about seven to eight years from the target date for replacement. This will give us needed time to plan economically for the mone-tary requirements. The total cost of the entire roof replacement can be upwards of $600,000.00. It need not be done all at one time. We have the luxury of having four separate roofs which will aid us in the replacement and enable us to pro-ceed at an easier pace. It will also keep any fu-ture needed assessments to a minimum. The board is also looking into replacement of the cooler for the pool, it is long overdue and will be a benefit to our summer residents.

I would like to address all the residents here at the Hamlet to thank you for entrusting me as President for another year. With that said, I need to thank the Board Members who are always there to contribute their expertise. Barbara Crespy thanks for your job as secretary and in-terview specialist, Joe Malka thanks for your dil-igence with the maintenance of the building.

It’s a sad time of year for us; all our snowbirds have left and it’s quiet. But, on a good note are Board has fewer complaints to address and is hopefully eliminating some major problems. Flowers are in and trees are due to be cut at the end of June; hopefully, mulching will be completed sooner. We have new owners that have moved in Mr. and Mrs. Gilberto Quiroz. We would like to welcome them and hope to see them out and about. Our secretary/treasurer Marilyn Siegel just came back from a wonderful trip to China with lots of good stories. I hope everyone had a won-derful Mother’s Day; I know I did. In the meantime, I hope to see you all at Mel’s Way Bistro. Until next month . . . ◄

ESSEX by Toni Mirobelli

Many of our friends and neighbors have head-ed north for the Summer and we will look for-ward to their return. For those of us still here, it is time to prepare for hurricane season. Preparation is important and all residents should heed storm warnings. The Essex will use Floor Captains to assist the Board with communicating with residents in the event of a major hurricane or other emergency.

Joyce Graham hosted a birthday party the day before Esther Cicciola’s 93rd birthday (May 6th). Friends and neighbors gathered to enjoy this special time with Esther. Grill nights will continue through the Summer as weather permits. Dates will be posted on the bulletin boards.

We can always use more hands on the Social Committee. Please contact Joyce Graham if you would like to help. Make new friends and have fun at the Social Committee activities.

All the units’ dryer vents were cleaned in May. Thank you to the Board members who helped in communicating to residents and helping on this project. ◄

“All’s well that ends well” a quote from some famous person (lol); therefore, our June 19th lunch and card party will be the final event for this season. Looking over programs of the past months, I sincerely hope all our mem-bers and guests had fun. Our goal is to try and make sure each new season is interesting, ex-citing and enjoyable. We wish everyone a won-derful summer and look forward to seeing all of you in the fall. Over the next few months PLSC will be busy planning the calendar for next season.

On May 8th - 31 of us climbed the silver ladder of Diva Duck and experienced a wonderful af-ternoon. Our guide provided us with some his-torical facts about Palm Beach as we passed famous sites. It was very exciting to “splash” into the water at which time the bus became a boat. We listened to great music and some corny jokes (we all laughed) as we learned about the owners of the beautiful mansions along the coast. After the tour we had a deli-cious lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. Thank you, chairpersons Sandi Wolf and Myrna Teitlebaum.

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Lunch & Card Party in the Poinciana room. Play begins at 11:00 AM and Lunch will be served at Noon. Our menu is a little different this time around. When you arrive at 11:00 AM there will be an appetizer table consisting of Shrimp Platter, Cheese & Fruit Platter, and Veggie Platter, etc. Lunch at Noon will be a hot Buffet Lemon & Rosemary Chicken and Pasta Primavera to be followed by dessert, Coffee, and Hot Tea. MEN'S CLUB “ON THE GO” by George Hoffman

Our day trip to the Islamorada on May 16th was adventurous. We arrived at the Islamora-da Fish Factory where we had a choice of seven items on the menu. The fish entrees were fresh, bountiful and delicious. From there we departed to the Key Largo Princess for the glass bottom boat ride. It was very interesting to see the various plants, fish and coral. An enjoyable day was had by all. This is more or less a repeat of last month’s up-coming trips. The day trip scheduled for June 12, 2018 is to the Miami Lowe Art Museum. The Museum features centuries of World Art. This is a docent accompanied tour of the Muse-um and tour of the Cuban Shul. Also included is a guided tour of Little Havana. The cost is $67.00 per person for members and $70.00 per person for nonmembers. The cost includes all tours, lunch at the Versailles Restaurant, and all gratuities except for the bus driver. The bus departs behind the Margate Building at 8:30 AM and returns about 4:30 PM. Last month we had some culture, this month let’s make some money. Monday, July 16, 2018 we are going back to Coconut Casino. The bus departs behind the Margate Building at 10:00 AM and returns about 4:00 PM. The cost is $22.00 per person for members and $24.00 per person for non-members. Cost includes trans-portation and $20.00 free play. The bus driv-er’s gratuity is not included. Come join us for a lucky afternoon. Now that we have some extra money in our pockets, let’s go see a show. Sunday. August 12, 2018 is an evening at Cava Tablao in Mi-ami. This evening trip includes transportation, a buffet style dinner and an exciting Flamenco Dance Show. The cost is $57.00 per person for members and $60.00 per person for non-members. The bus departs behind the Margate Building at 5:30 PM. The driver’s tip is not in-cluded. This should be an exciting evening. Book early – no refunds after August 1, 2018. We are planning trips for September and Octo-ber, but they will depend on the attendance of our earlier trips. We are trying to keep you “On the Go” during the off season. ◄

YOGA AND PILATES

CLASSES by Ruth Cassell

All classes are held in the Community Room: Mat yoga: Monday at 10:00 AM, Wednesday at 10:00 AM (with Shannon) and Saturday at 9:00 AM (with Denise) Chair yoga: Tuesday at 9:30 AM (with Shannon) Pilates: Monday and Wednesday at 9:00 AM (with Shannon) Mat yoga meets three times each week. Yoga increases balance and flexibility. No experi-ence is necessary as the teachers encourage students to work at their own level as they

demonstrate postures in several ways to prevent in-jury while allowing options for differing ability levels.

If you are daunted by mat yoga, try chair yoga on Tuesdays or Fridays at 9:30 AM. It’s an evolving class that works on positions for flexi-bility and stretching without getting on the floor. Pilates focuses on core muscles, that is, every-thing from the neck to the thighs. The muscles become stronger yet remain lean and flexible. We have been using light weights (1-3 pounds), balls, and bands. Shannon is always looking to keep the class interesting. Joseph Pilates believed that, “Physical fitness can neither be achieved by wishful thinking nor outright purchase.” You’ll see its benefits and changes after a few classes. Each class is $5.00 and all you need is a mat and light weights (for Pilates) if possible. Hope to see you there. ◄

POINCIANA PLACE TOWNHOMES

by Mark Roth We held our April Board Meeting on May 8th at 7:00 PM in the Terrace Room at the Poinci-ana Clubhouse. At the Board Meeting, sever-al topics were discussed. The minutes of the meeting will be posted to our web site (www.pptha.org) soon.

Much of the meeting was taken up discussing the status of our proposed document revi-sions. The Board voted to direct our attorney to prepare the necessary correspondence and documents to send to our members so they may consider the proposed changes. Once the information has been sent to the owners, a “Town-Hall” style meeting with legal counsel present will be held for the purpose of ex-plaining the changes and answering any questions that our owners may have. In addi-tion, owners will be able to ask questions of the Board in advance by sending an email to [email protected].

The Board has obtained quotes for the re-placement of the electrical system beneath our pool canopy which is rusted out. The sys-tem is being shut down until such time as it has been replaced.

The pool resurfacing is scheduled to begin on June 3rd, weather permitting. The pool will be closed for about two weeks. Arrangements have been made for our residents to use the pool at The Gardens while ours is out of ser-vice. The Townhomes’ Board and its resi-dents wish to thank The Gardens for graciously allowing our residents to use their pool while ours is being serviced.

Our next board meeting will be held on June 26, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the Terrace Room on the second floor of the clubhouse at 3536 Via Poinciana, Lake Worth, FL. Notice will also be posted at our pool bulletin board.

The Board is formulating a program to re-place many of the trees that were removed by, or after, Irma. Additionally, the board will be consulting with our arborist to identify those trees that threaten our buildings, so we can be proactive about removing dangerous

trees and replacing them with nonthreatening trees before our buildings are damaged. This project will be discussed at a Board meeting when we have more information.

Our web site at www.pptha.org is a valuable resource for those who use it and for the Board. Stay up to date by visiting our web site regularly. While there, use the link at the bottom of the page to join our Email Notifica-tion List.

Please report any concerns or necessary re-pairs that we may not be aware of by using the "Send Email to Management & Board" link on the left side of this page. The link on the web site to contact management and the Board is there to report issues that MUST be dealt with quickly to avoid additional harm or destruction or for reporting perceived billing errors. It is not for the purpose of asking questions of management or the board. Ques-tions and non-emergency issues will be ad-dressed during the open forums after the con-clusion of Board meetings.

If you have a topic that you would like the Board to consider, please send us an email at [email protected]. ◄

Poinciana Plates by Toni Mirobelli

Sophia Loren once commented that “The most

indispensable ingredient of all good home

cooking is love for those you are cooking for.”

I once admitted that “made with love” means I

licked the spoon and kept using it!! And Ma-

ris Markowitz from the Princeton building

told me that she enjoys cooking but prefers

baking with her family. Maris’ husband,

Frank, is deceased; however, she said she is so

fortunate to have her family (children: Robert,

Beth and Jacalyn; grandchildren: Joshua, Am-

ber, Summer, Russell, Sara and Jamie) all re-

siding in Florida. Robert is a chef and Joshua,

Amber and Jamie often get a chance to cook

with Grandma. A great grandchild is due in

September!

Maris is sharing a recipe for NOODLE PUD-

DING which can be used as a side dish or a

dessert and freezes well. Ingredients are:

16 oz package of regular (not No Yolk) me-

dium size noodles, cooked according to

package directions and strained

8 oz brick of cream cheese, softened

8 oz cottage cheese

8 oz sour cream (Daisy or Breakstone

brand)

1 stick unsalted butter

¾ cup sugar

5 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions: melt butter and put it in a 9” x 13”

Pyrex or metal pan and spread some butter up

the side of the pan. Add the cooked noodles

and mix in pan. Put all the remaining ingredi-

ents into a blender and mix. Pour this mixture

over the noodles and mix well. Crush some

frosted flakes cereal in a bowl and sprinkle

over the noodle mixture. You can also sprinkle

a little cinnamon on the top if you like. Bake

at 350 degrees for about one hour. (If you in-

sert a toothpick and it is still very wet, it is

not quite ready.) ◄

POINCIANA TENNIS CLUB by Kathy Graves

Our terrific season has come to an end and

we have had to bid adieu to so many players.

At times during the season we organize a

group to go to Mel's Way for breakfast on a

Friday following tennis play. We had such a

breakfast on Friday, April 27th (see photo) as

15 of us met that day to say goodbye to Klaus

(our president), Kurt, and Yves. We still will

have a good-sized group of year-round resi-

dents continuing tennis play all summer.

I am pleased to report that we had good rep-

resentation from the tennis club for participa-

tion in Poinciana's 9th Annual Memorial Day

Parade held on Monday, May 28th. Linda

Sokol and Sol Lasso marched as pom-pom

gals, Kathy as Air Force banner gal, and Wil-

lie Reynoso and Anatoly Savchenko marched

carrying the large Poinciana Veterans ban-

ner. Willie, Anatoly, and Kathy from tennis

club along with others decorated the golf

carts to be used in the parade to carry our

veterans who can no longer march the dis-

tance.

We welcome residents to come out and join us

for summer tennis play on Mondays, Wednes-

days, and Fridays at 8:00 AM. ◄
