Poetry and Protest
Songs of Change
SST: lyrics, civil rights, anti-war, anti-poverty, anti-apartheid, women’s rights
Learning intention: To know: that songs are poetry and are also used to protest. To understand: how lyrics may have the power to bring about change. To be able to: choose a song and analyse the ways in which it has the power to bring about change.
Look up the definitions for this week’s SST and write your own definition for each in your workbook.
Whether it's an upbeat track that makes you want to get up and dance or a heartfelt ballad that brings a tear to your eye, there's no doubt that songs can be very powerful. Legendary U2 rocker Bono once said, "Music can change the world because it can change people." In your table team share the song that has had the most influence or holds a great deal of significance for you.
