POEMS BY MARSHA JOHNSON Volume One Compiled 2011 Here are poems and rhymes to warm the cockles of your heart and liven up your teaching. The words flow like honey from the hive, from heaven to the earth, passing through my fingers for a brief moment in time, and I often read these poems later and cannot recognize myself as author, more of a conductor it would seem! However, over the years, I have managed to accumulate quite a pile of poems and rhymes, centering verses, circle games and even some rather funny silly stuff. I hope you will enjoy them and to the best of my knowledge, I wrote every single one in this volume and you are free to share them with whomever you like, reprint them or publish them, it would be very kind if you would add my modest name, Marsha Johnson, and direct people to my website, www.magicofwaldorf.com where they can obtain their very own copy of this volume as well as other Guides and block plans, community project plans and more. It is only with the highest regard and warmth for the beautiful children who pass through my life and spend a little time gracing me with their truth, that these poems were ever born. Thank you dear children, for your inspiration! Mrs. M

    Volume One Compiled 2011

Here are poems and rhymes to warm the cockles of your heart and liven up your teaching.

Mrs. M

  • For The Summer Solstice

    Come all my people

    Under the bright star

    To see the night sky

Seems so close, but so far

    The sun shall shine again

    At the new day break

And the days will be shorter

    When next we awake....

    Plants

Grow, plants, in my garden dear

I will water you, never fear

Make seeds and flowers and buds

Grow carrots, peas, zucchini and spuds

Tomatoes turn red, Cabbage form heads!

Garlic make whips, Kale, good chips!

Beans in the shell, Raspberry go well

Corn stand up tall, Salad for all!

Grow plants, in my garden dear

I will water you, never fear

  • For an Evening Campfire

    Come and gather round

    Come and gather round

    Find yourself a seat

    On gentle Brother Ground...

    Find yourself a place

    Right near the fireplace

    Warm your hands and face

    With Sister Fire's grace

    Settle down and listen

    to my evening tale

    Quiet now dear friends

    Let the story boat sail!

    In the Garden

    Cherry blossoms pink and sweet

    Falling down around my feet

Kiss my cheek and please my nose

    Drift around my barefoot toes!

Springtime grass is green and fresh

    Mother Natures pretty dress

    Yellow, purple, pink, and white,

    Flowers grow in warm sunlight!

  • Dancing With The Fairies (give each child a bright spring silk)

I am dancing with the fairies in the fairy ring

My little toes are tapping as we hear birds sing,

I spread my wings out lightly in the sweet spring breeze

To turn and twirl and dance to please the fairy queen

With the fairies I am dancing with my arms and legs

Above my head are skies as blue as robins eggs

Underneath the grass is as green as it can be,

And all around me, dance the fairies I do see!

    BRIGHT BRIGHT SUN

Bright bright sun (hands held high with a circle shape)

    Bright bright sun (same)

Golden yellow (wave hands up in air around 'sun' space)

Very high (Reach up very high!)

Sending down your golden light (flutter hands down down onto face)

(make up a simple tune and use hand motions) Sing this three to five

    times each time you meet.

    Movement While Standing

    Beneath The Summer Stars

Way up high and far away (reach oh so high)

Lie the summer stars (make little splashes with fingers as stars)

Beneath the stars there is a sky (wave hands back and forth up high)

  • Beneath the sky there is a tree (lift arms as if tree branches)

Beneath the tree there is a blanket (crouch down, hands over head)

Beneath the blanket, ME! (Pull away hands, jump up high !)

Repeat this at least 3 times....

    .

Silk Excercises with Infant-Toddlers (keep things moving fast)

    Summer Garden (simple tune)

Into my garden (child crawls into lap)

I planted my seeds (touch lightly with fingers pinched)

Lettuce and corn (touch the ears one at a time)

Potatoes and Peas! (touch the belly button area)

And what came up? (cover with silk....lightly)

Up up up? (quiet....at end pull off silk)

Little Yellow Buttercups! (child pops up!)

Sailing Boats (need 2 silks per child)

My little one, let's go afloat (take hands and swing)

and make a lovely sailing boat (pull arms wide as if to lift boat)

A stick for the hull, a leaf for the sail (lay silk down then wave)

An briney blue sea in our wood pail! (child hops onto silk on ground)

You hold the tiller, I'll pull the rope (pretends to hold tiller and

    then pul ropes)

We'll both look thru the telescope! (form hands into telescopes)

You fix the lunch, I'll make the tea (use hands to eat and drink)

As we sail about on our shining blue sea! (hold silk out as sail

    again)

  • Fishes (simple tunes with group game)each adult has a silk and stand

up with silks draping down to the ground...children on hands and

knees or just sit....if very small, parents move while children are

    stationary.

    Quiet fishies quiet........(children wait)

swimming soft and slow...(children move thru standing parents)

swimming thru the kelp.....(adults wave silks a bit

Silently they go....(still 'swimming thru silks)

*You can do this first verse quite a few times, then end with the

    next verse

Quiet fishies quiet....(slow down the poem or song..)

sun is going to bed....silks begin to drop down as adults crouch)

tired little fishies...(children start curling up into the silk beds)

Lay down their little heads....(adults wrap each child in its silky

    bed)

    Dandelions

    Dandelion (hands over face)

Golden Fellow (slowly open your hands, keep fingers out as petals)

How can you be (wiggle fingers)

so very YELLOW? (make ASL sign for yellow, thumb and pinky out, wave)

    Dandelion (hands over face)

Turns about (turn hands outward facing away from face)

Now the seeds (wiggle the fingers of both hands)

Fly out and out! (blow and finger seeds go sailing away)

  • Sarong Games (for very small children under the belly, bigger ones

can be on the back with a sarong 'saddle, parents on hands and knees)

    Mama (or Papa) Elephant!

Tie child in sarong and suspend under belly, crawl on hands and

knees, or put ones 3 and older on back with sarong saddle (tie under

adult armpits with knot on back to hold). MOVE SLOWLY

    Mama Elephante,

    Papa Elephante

    Moving Round the Jungle!

Soft and sweet, Great big feet

    Gently touch the grassy ground!

This should be said in monotone almost, quiet humming type voice

quiet slow movements to let child feel very much as if in a rocking

cradle, no wild bucking horses! Daddies especially love this game

with their great wide chests and longer arms....be careful to see

that the child is securely within the sarong. Tying the baby on with

back to parent's front or front to front, can lead to different

    experiences for the children.

    Sarong Game Two

Sumer Whale Swim...(parent holds on end of silk, child can hold other

end, if baby, let baby lie on the floor, then move around them in a

circle, if toddler, they hold one end, and adults move around as

able, if preschooler, you can move around quite a bit more!) One

adult can have several 'whales' on her tail!)

    Take my tail

    Little whale!

And let's have a little swim!

  • Summer sun

    Warm Breeze

Then let's have a little swim!

    Hold on tight

    Waves crest white!

Now let's have a little swim!

The colorful sarong is fun to dye as a group with pretty plant dyes

hues and use for so many many activities. Try to have one for each

    family.

    Sarong Game Three

    Caterpillar Wrap

Adults lay silk on floor, child lies along one edge, head and face

    are not covered.

    Sleepy little caterpillar

    Roll up inside your bed

Roll up roll up roll up

    Quiet little caterpillar

    Sleep well inside your bed

    Resting resting resting

(Roll child up and gently rock with hands while wrapped)

And when the time is right

When spring cold is summer bright

    Unroll Unroll Unrolll

    Unroll your cozy bed

    Listen as the summer sings

    Stretch your little legs

And show us your butterfly wings!

and tie on silks for 'hoods' and move about the 'forest)...

    Little Red Cap

    Little Red Cap

    Walking thru the Forest

    With your Brown Basket

Children stop with baskets at each adult and 'collect' something, ie.

pine cone, or wooden block, not too small!) This one can last a LONG

time be warned! If you like, use whole fruits or something and at end

    times)

Bring it to my mother dear, (hold out hands in a bouquet and bring forward)

She will kiss me, here and here! (make fingertips kiss on cheeks or nose and

    cheek)

Birds in the garden, quick quick quick

Birds at the feeder, peck peck peck

Birds in their nests, weave weave weave

Birds see a kitty cat! Tweet tweet tweet!

*you can move your feet in a circle for the first line, then stop and clap and

make movements for the last 3 words and then on tweet flap your wings and

fly to the middle of the circle! This could also be a very fun game with one

child being the kitty cat, and all the others birds, and when they see the kitty,

they fly away to a nest in the middle of the circle made of silksif one is

caught, she can be the next kitty cat

    Worms

I wonder wonder wonder all about the worms

As they wiggle in the earth I wonder how they learn

To swim about beneath my feet in deep brown sea

    Like the bunny I hop

    A lop a lop a lop

    And like the yellow chick

I chirp and peep and pick!

    The Snow Has Gone

Yesterday the hills were white, full of glittering bright sunlight

Drifts of frozen ice and snow, frosted houses, row by row

Then came the warm winds of spring, gently moving, softly bring,

Breath that melts that winter snow, making rivers overflow

Dark brown earth now greets the sky, flowers blooming by and by.

    Sweet Spring Sunsets

    The days are growing longer

    The stars look all anew

The sun sinks down more slowly

As falls the sweet spring dew

    The flowers close their petals

And kiss the sun good night

    Green and gold and scarlet

    Then shines silver moonlight

  • Roses

    There is a special plant

    In my garden dear

    who graces us with beauty

    but also draws a tear

    It's sweet smelling Rose

with her dainty leaves of green

    She has the nicest blossoms

But her thorns are simply mean!

    Summer Berries

Out to the farm we go

In the heat of the summer day

We go to seek the sweetest

    Berries for our tray!

    Look down for red strawberry

Look ahead for the raspberry red

watch out for the prickly canes

    of Marions in their bed!

The last one of the season

    is my favorite of all

    It is the purple blueberry

Who hangs from his branches so tall!

From the berry fields we come home

Lips stained in shades of red

And after we put up all our jam

We go quietly off to bed!

With dreams of berries in our heads!

On the ground so soft and still..

    Wind is blowing softly softly

As the snow drifts slowly build...

    All round is quiet

    Nothing makes a sound

    In the winter time

    White covers up the ground

  • Storms are roaring loudly loudly

    Ice shines thick and clear

    Blustering so mightily mightily

Old Man Winter comes so near

    All round is noisy

Special journey, please come this way!

And show yourself on Groundhog'd Day!

    Slidery spinnery turning about

Our family may not leave our house!

Lilac snow with Frosty white ice

Can't decide if it's naughty or nice

    icicles hanging from our eaves...

At least on sidewalks, won't you leave?

    Missing Green

How I miss the brilliant green

    of the Bountiful Summer Queen

Where are pinks and golds and blues?

    Of the Springtime's palette hues?

Outdoors is dark and cold and deep

All my animal friends are asleep

Except for that sassy Mr. Jay

The furry squirrels around him play...

But I miss green and red and gold

How many snowflakes can clouds hold?

    Frozen blanket made of white....

    Gleaming in the silver light....

  • Lady Frost creeps high on glass

Soon her time will come to pass!

When little crocus flower is seen

  • Michaelmas Poem & Game

Form a circle, tie a cloth on one child's eyes, he lies

sleeping....everyone else has a silk, dangling from their hands,

towards the dragon, not too close

Near the town, within a lake

Beware the dragon, he does wake!

    Watch as the dreadful dragon

    Is coming from his lair!

The Dragon wakes up! Gets on his knees and tries to grab a

silk.......as the others hold silks out to tease the blinded dragon,

when he catches one, that child is the dragon!

Repeat. Can be played outdoors, too, with bigger circle and dragon

    on his feet.

    Lumberjacks!

    Lumberjack with great big boots

walks amongst the stumps and roots!

    Trees that tower all around

Soon will lie upon the ground!

    Chop chop chop

    Hop hop hop

  • Skip skip skip

    Chip chip chip!

Wood chips flying in the air

    Shiny axes, swing with care

Split and pile and chop and more

Stack it up by my front door!

    Chop chop chop

    Hop hop hop

    Skip skip skip

    Chip chip chip.

    In the winter's bitter night

flames do snap all bold and bright!

    Golden fire crackling spark...

Drives away the cold and dark..

    Chop chop chop

    hop hop hop

    skip skip skip

    Chip chip chip..

  • Martinmas Poem

    Come my children

    Come round here

    Gather round

    Drive out fear!

    In the dark time

    Long ago

    Martin of Tours

    Rode back home!

    Cold and frosty

    Was the night

    Poor old beggar

    In dim light!

    Thoughts of home

    in his head

    By the doorway

    Martin was led!

  • Poor old fellow,

    Suffer and shake

    Suddenly Martin

    His sword did take!

    Sliced in half

    the bright red coat

    Wrapped around

    that grateful bloke!

Now today we walk the path

    Despite cold and rain,

    Hold our lanterns of hope

    Tell of Martin again.

    ALL THAT SPARKLES

All that sparkles in the night

All that glows so warm and bright

Surround us now with love and care

Surround us now as we prepare.

  • GLOW CANDLE

With the Light of Stars Above

    And Crystals Below

    In the Dark

    Darkness finds me

    Darkness round me

Close and here, Dark the Year

    Brightness calls me

    Brightness fills me

Warm and bright, Full of life!

    Just Ahead

We light the candles one by one

We seek the living gold of sun

All around us rests the dark

Just Ahead, we find the spark

    Deep and Green

Deep and green, the forests sleep

Around the woods the animals creep

    Quietly they move around

    Tiptoeing on the frosty ground

  • The little birds do flit and fly

    Over them the lead-grey sky

    Underneath the roots, so deep

The little furry beasts do sleep

Gusty winds blow through the wood

Smoke from fires warm and good

    Windows shine with golden light

In cozy home, my heart is bright!

But all creatures large and small

And for for tiniest ones of all

    Woods, protect these little friends

Until the cold of winter ends

    THANK YOU

Dear sun, dear moon, we thank you today

For lighting our world in a beautiful way

Dear stars, dear earth, we thank you, too

(Choose several children to huddle under silver-lilac-white silks and

one under a lovely brown silk, hiding behind some larger objects near

the circle space....then as the others circle round, saying the words

aloud, leading one another by the hands, listening, then on the 3rd

stanza, the 'bunnies' and 'deer' can softly come and follow along

behind, or join in where they are able...or thread through the hands,

under neath, as if they were going between the trees....) If

desired, teacher can hold up several white larger silks for the

children to pass under when walking the circle, as if the snow were

    falling in the room.....

    Crick Crack Snip Snap!

    Crick Crack Snippy Snap!

The trees are talking with their sap!

    Snick Snack Trippy Trap!!

We can use our sugar tap!

    Splish Splosh Mish Mash!

Syrup runs both slow and fast!

    Slide Slip Stirry Flake!

    Syrup sweet on my pancake!

(a clapping game....with a partner, teach the children to keep time

with this lively rhyme by clapping right hands, simple, with a

partner, or even clapping a right hand to a left hand, or stamping

with bare feet on the floor, or even clapping feet together while

sitting, the beat is 1 2 3 4 on the silly words, and this is a good

  • place for some dexterity work with the feet, even simple stamping of

the right foot one line, then the left foot the next, changing from

clapping or snapping of fingers, to the feet, or other sequence,

another variation might be to have all the children stand in an

inward circle, and the 'pancake' goes around the inside, clapping

hands with each child and when the word pancake is said, the last one

    touched is the new pancake!).

    Puddles!

    Piddle paddle puddle

    Water in a muddle!

    Silver raindrops falling down

    Into pools, wet and brown!

Pools and puddles, big and small

I can wade right through them all!

With my boots and hat and coat

I am almost like a boat!

    Piddle paddle puddle more

I can sail right to my door

Mud and water, dirt and rain

    May I go outside again?

    Hot Muffins!

In the winter, sun sleeps in

    Rising late in cloudy dim

When I tumble out of bed

    Mama rubs my sleepy head

Round the houses, swirls the snow

    rustling rising rolling.... Blow!

  • Inside my stove makes golden heat,

On the table, fresh muffins to eat!

    Muffins split with butter spread

    Plump and tasty, golden bread!

    Raisins, pumpkin, cinnamon, wheat

    Winter muffins, mmmm let's eat!

    BULBS IN THE SPRING

    Little brown bulbs

    Asleep in the ground

Wait for the winter to pass.....

    The sun will come out,

    Warm up the ground

and Wake up the Bulbs at last!

FROSTY FAIRY ---use white or pale blue or lavender silks for this

movement game as you dance in a ring!

    Little Frosty Fairy

    Dances on her Toes

    Crystal in her Earrings

    Snowflakes on her Nose!

    Tiny Silver fairy

    With icy little wings

    Plays with moonlit sparkles

    From her silver rings!

  • THE COLD WIND BLOWS

The cold wind blows around my door

Sneaks through windows, along the floor

And freezes my fingers and toes and face

And scurries around all over the place!

It blusters and bellows and brags and howls

And pushes and presses on limbs and boughs!

That old north wind brings frost and snow,

And makes us all huddle around the stove!

So Mama makes cocoa in mugs so bright

And we keep the fireplace crackling this night!

When it is time to climb into our beds

we pull our blankets right up to our heads!

    Rain Puddles

Cold and wet the rain pours down

It drips and drops all over town

It makes the people wet and cold

    And all umbrellas do unfold!

The cold rain makes the ground so nice

Big muddy pools, sometimes with ice

And I with boots and coat and hat

Can stamp around in all of that!

    Tulips

Of all the spring flowers I love

    This one clearly rises above

Her leaves are sharp, her head is round

and beautiful colors she brings from the ground.

    Baby Birds

    Mother Robin builds her nest

    Round and snug and soft

    Little eggs of beautiful blue

    In cradle high aloft

  • Soon to waken, crick crack creck

Out comes bird with slender neck!

    Open beak of hungry one

    Mama's work has just begun!

    GREEN

    Green green we welcome you

    We are weary of white!

    Green green spread out anew

    Make our winter world bright!

    Cherry Snow

    Under the cherry tree

The light was pink and new

    Falling all around me

    Cherry snowflakes flew

    Caught them in my fingers

    Felt them on my head

    When breezes shook the branches

    My cherry pink bed....

  • Out of the Brown

    Out of the brown

    Creeps the green

    And rust and purple

    and red.

    Where do you come from

    Buds of spring?

    From out of that hard

    brown bed?

    Suddenly

    Suddenly spring has sprung

    Suddenly shifts the solid ice

Snapping and swirling its way to water....

    Suddenly bare brown branchs bewitch

Me with their burgeoning blossoming bowers

    Brilliant bright bangles of beauty......

  • Suddenly flocks of fast flying fowl

    Flow fearlessly with faraway fanfare

Falling frightfully fast into the fields....

    TABLE BLESSINGS

For those who sit amongst us

    And those around us still

For all who have come to join this

    Table of good will

We are mindful of our blessings,

May it be so, for everyone.

  • Friendly Family Blessing

From coast to coast, from sea to sea

A nation full of people are we

But this one day we set aside

To come together with friendly pride

To sup and laugh, to eat and pray

To build a memory of Thanksgiving Day.

With grateful hearts we see this food

And thank the farmers, humble and good,

With sun and moon, over seasons long,

It makes our hearts and bodies strong,

For work and play, for rest and sleep,

    A humble gratitude we keep.
