Performance Notes
1. The notes on the staff are relative to each individual singer.
The center line indicates the “center” of that person’s voice.
Notes above that are higher than the center, those below the line are lower than the center.
2. The rhythmic arrangement of notes on a page are vertically correct: different parts occasionally line up with one another. However, each
note does not necessarily fall on simple subdivisions of the beat.
Singers should not attempt to be rhythmically precise — that’s not the point of the piece.
Rather, singers should use the horizontal placement of the notes as a “relative” designation: Each singer should attempt to sing the notes
close the the written beats that are near them (the numbers 1, 2, 3 etc. printed in a tiny font on each stave.)
And, just as in traditional notation, the singers should make sixteenth notes faster than eighth notes, eighths faster than quarters, half
longer than quarters, etc.
3. The “grouping” of notes under a bracket or above a beam indicates a group of notes that should be performed with a constant pulse for
the duration of that group.
Thus, sequential groups may require different pulses: each singer should be moving from pulse to pulse, independent of the other singers.
These “pulses” do not have to be mathematically precise, even though the way they are written on the page is mathematically precise.
4. Articulation marks:
• Tenuto marks: should be performed as a “swell” of volume. Longer duration notes have a longer swell, shorter ones a correspond-
ingly shorter swells.
• Staccato marks: as short as possible, with a clear gaps between itself and its following note.
• Accent marks: as a sudden “forte/piano” modified by the overriding dynamic movement. (If the overriding dynamic is piano, the
f/p should be softer than when the overriding dynamic is forte.
5. The dashed vertical bar lines indicate the beginnings and endings of a 4/4 measure.
6. Most often, the conductor beats in 4/4 time.
Often, the last measure on a page is a “partial” measure (1/8, 3/4, 5/8, 7/8, etc.). The conductor should beat these appropriately.
