Know yourmeasurements.

The optimum seat height for a dining chair is when there is 26cm to 30cm between the top of the seat and the top of the dining table. If your chair is 46cm to 51cm from the floor to the top of the seat, it will fit well under a standard height table while allowing plenty of legroom.

Don’t forget that if you go for dining armchairs you may need to double check the spacing. The thickness of the table top will eat into your space available for the arm of the chair.

Bear in mind that some dining chairs are wider at the bottom, for example the iconic Eames Dining Chairs, so will need more space around the table. It’s always best to check the measurements and if they aren’t available, just ask! It’s so much more convenient to know your sizing before having your furniture delivered, as it takes away the worry of whether the products will actually fit in your space. In this instance, the measurement you are looking for is called the ‘footprint’.

Are you sittingcomfortably?

If you are after a chair that has lumbar support, a back height between 30cm and 40cm is ideal.

It’s one of the most important parts of choosing your dining chairs. Knowing your measurements before you purchase will save you both time and worry so be sure to check and check again!

Stackable chairs are great space savers as they allow for easy and convenient storage. It’s also a good idea to consider stackable chairs if you have an extending dining table, as you can pull up some extra seats when the table is extended and then put them away again when not in use.

If you are looking for a chair that’s comfortable enough to accommodate for after dinner chats, a dining armchair, sometimes called a ‘carver chair’ is ideal, as they offer the perfect elbow perch alongside lots of comfort while seated. This will keep friends and family happily sat around the table, long after the dinner plates have been cleared away!

If space isn’t an issue...Push the boat out with your chair choice.

Stylist’s tip

Can’t choose? Why not mix it up!Choosing just one dining chair can be tricky- there’s so many different types available! If you find you can’t select just one, why not follow one of our three mix and match dining room tricks to achieve this simple yet very on trend look in your home.

A great way to achieve this look is to place dining chairs around each side of your table, then place a dining armchair at each end of the table. This mixes up the seating dynamic just enough to have a big style impact, while keeping the style of chair the same means you’ll still have a sleek and coordinated set.

2. Same design, different colour

1. Same colour dining chair, different design

3. Same style dining chair, different design

Simple and easy to create, having the same design but different colour of dining chairs allows you to have some fun with colour in your space, without it looking overly mismatched. This look works so well because the design of chair remains the same, enabling you to be really bold with your colour choices.

By keeping the colour of your dining chairs the same, you’ll still have an element of coordination but can really have some fun with the shape, style and size of the chairs you choose. Go bright and bold or cool and sophisticated depending on the look you want to create in your home.

What material?Narrow your search by asking yourself these three vital questions so you know the material you choose will be right for your space...

1. How often will you use your dining chairs?

2. How long will you be sitting on the chair for?

3. What is your budget?

If your dining room is the social hub of your home and you’ll be using the chairs daily, you’ll want a material that’s hardwearing and easy to clean. All of our chairs are fit for everyday use but care and maintenance will always be a key point to consider.

All of our dining chairs have been designed with comfort in mind as it’s such an important part of any dining room seating. If you’d like a chair that will keep you sitting comfortably during those long after dinner chats, opt for something with a upholstered finish or padding as opposed to a hardwood or laminate seat.

Make sure you have an idea of roughly how much you’d like to spend on your dining chairs. Materials such as real leather have an instant look and feel of quality but this does result in a slightly higher price tag. If a material is out of your price range there are always alternative options available, faux leather for example, which allow you to create the style and look you want without going over your budget.

Having a sample of the material before you buy will give you a much better idea of what it both looks and feels like, making it much easier to visualise the colour and material in your space. Swatches are also great for making comparisons; if you’re stuck between a selection of colours or whether to go for real or faux leather, ordering a sample will hopefully make you decision a whole lot easier!

If you’re ordering furniture online, it’s always a good idea to order swatches.

Fabrics

Use a slightly dampened cloth to wipe any spillages or marks as soon as they appear.

Only use specialised upholstery cleaning productsto treat the chair as you know the product will be safe to use on the fabric.

You can spray your fabric dining chairs with a scotchgard to give it an extra layer of protection. This will help to prevent stains, lock out water and make your fabric chairs more durable.

Avoid placing fabric chairs in direct sunlight or by high sources of heat as this can, over time, fade the colour of the fabric.

After cleaning don’t leave the chairs to air dry. Instead use a kitchen towel to remove anyexcess moisture.

Avoid spreading moisture around the chair by spot cleaning the marked area of the fabric. Repeated dabbing with a damp cloth is better than saturatingthe fabric so bear this in mind when cleaning.

Real LeatherUse an absorbent cloth or sponge to wipe theaffected areas. Luke warm water should dojust the trick!

Do dry your leather furniture after cleaning with a soft cloth rather than leaving your leather furniture to air dry.

If you really want to give your leather some TLC, it’s worth investing in a leather maintenance kit which will look after the leather before, during and after cleaning.

Avoid using soaps or cleaning solvents as this will damage the leather.

Try not to place your leather dining chairs in harshdirect sunlight as like with most things, the leather will fade to some extent when it is directly exposed.

Be careful of colour transfers from brand new jeans or heavily dyed items of clothing as this could potentially mark the leather. To clean marks left by clothing, use something such as a magic sponge immediately for the best results.

Faux Leather

Use a damp, microfiber soft cloth.

When cleaning, apply a gentle amount of pressure in a circular motion.

Use a mild detergent such as washing up liquid.

Don’t use an abrasive cloth or sponge.

Don’t scrub - this will just crack the leather rather than help to remove the mark.

Don’t let the faux leather air dry after cleaning. Instead, use a dry soft cloth to remove an excess moisture.

PlasticMild household cleaning sprays, furniture wipes, or even baby wipes are fine to use on plastic dining chairs.

You can also use an antibacterial spray if needed, which is great for families with young children.

After cleaning, dry your plastic chairs thoroughly to avoid having to deal with stubborn water marks.

Although plastic chairs are very durable, stay away from using abrasive materials like scourers whencleaning the surface.

Don’t leave your plastic chairs outside. They can be used on occasion but aren’t designed to withstand all weather conditions for long periods of time.

This one goes without saying, but avoid placing anything of extreme temperature on or around a plastic dining chair.

Wood

Use a dish soap and water on your wooden finishes, applied with a damp cloth.

Do keep your wooden dining chairs out of directsunlight where possible as over time, this can damage the look and feel of the wood.

Don’t let a wooden chair air dry but rather wipe over the surface with another dry cloth to remove any excess water.

Don’t use anything rough or abrasive to clean wooden dining chairs as this will scratch and damage the beautifully smooth finish.

Painted Wood

Always use a soft damp cloth.

Do wipe the whole surface evenly, rather thanjust the mark. Localised scrubbing will damage the painted layer rather than help to removethe stain.

Do test any cleaners you use on an underside or hidden part of the chair before going ahead and cleaning the whole thing.
