Be the First One to Hold a Successul Spring Sale! Decide its time to pare down your

possessions and clean out your home, room by room. Make a list o reasons why youwant to do this to motivate you. Keep the list handy and where you will see it.

    1. Choose a completion goal date and mark your calendar. Te goal date will be whenthe weather is warmer and you can have a Sale. Set a time rame complete with steps soyou can meet your needs. It will depend on when you started and how many rooms orhow much you have to clean out. Write your goal date, timerame and steps on your list oreasons.

    2. Set a fnancial goal to put some o the money you make rom your Sale into a savingsaccount. You can decide i you will save a certain amount or a certain percentage. A certainpercentage, like 50%, is easier because you dont know how much you will make at yourSale. Setting a fnancial goal is a big motivator or cleaning out the house. Write yourfnancial goal down on your list o reasons.

    3. Start in one room and fnish each room beore you begin another. Get rid o items youdont like, no longer use or want, and items that are broken or past their prime. And get

rid o items that have bad memories or bad eelings attached to them.

    4. I you fnd that you dont necessarily like an item but are emotionally attached to itbecause it was a git rom someone special or i it reminds you o someone, group allo these items together and select your avorites or just a certain amount o these items.Remember the love you shared still exists and your loved ones would not want you to beupset over them. be given to other amily members. Asking a riend or a amily member to be there whenyou clean out helps with this type o anxiety. In exchange, you can oer to help them cleanout and host a garage sale together!

    5. Get some boxes. Mark them Sale, Donate, Keep: Relocate/GiveawayTe Keep:Relocate/Giveaway means that you are moving it to another part o your home or givingit away, not donating it. Trow away trash and junk and dont compromise.

    6. For Sale items: Clean and repair them i they are repairable and sellable. Start pricingyour items and price them to sell. Ater you price an item, pack it with like items, its easierpreparing or your Sale. I you need help with pricing, check Ebay, Craigslist or go toGoodwill or a resale shop. Your goal is to sell the item and make money. Follow through onthe other boxes by donating them, using the items in another room, or giving them away.

    7. As you get closer to your goal date, congratulate yoursel as you clean out each room andcelebrate each victory. When the weather has changed and your goal week is here, createand post signs, and place an ad in the paper i you choose. Be sure to use clear wording andinclude your Sales date, time and location.

    8. Get prepared the day beore your Sale. Have your cash, change, tables and chair ready. And paper, pens, bags, newspaper (to wrap breakables) and everything else you may needtoo. I you are having your Sale in a garage, have your items outside in the garage. Have

your cell phone charged. Go to bed early. Be sure to tell your neighbors you are having aSale.

    9. Get up early, eat breakast and be prepared. Tink saety: keep your cell phone on youand split up your money into dierent pockets. Tink positive and celebrate your hardwork and all your eorts it will be worth it. You will be proud when you walk aroundyour clean house AND each month when you look at your saving account statement ateryouve made that deposit!

    10. Tis is probably the most important suggestion o all, no matter what . . .

According to many surveys, money is the most common topic that couples fght about.

Tis isnt surprising, given it represents so much love, happiness, power, and prestige, and based on past experience, each o us has our own very unique view o how it shouldbe used. Money may result in control issues i one partner in the relationship holds all thepurse strings. It also may lead to heated arguments when couples encounter job loss or anunexpected fnancial windall or i one partner has a gambling problem. But with patience, insight, and compassion, couples can work together to reconcile their money dierences.Deanna Booker, Communications and Community Outreach Manager or local nonproftConsumer Credit Counseling Service o MD & DE (CCCS), oers these tips or improvingdomestic harmony and gaining fnancial peace o mind:

Learn how to communicate. ake the time to regularly talk with your partner about amilyfnances. Dont wait until a problem erupts; instead, schedule ongoing conversations whereyou review your current fnancial situation, discuss money issues, and identiy commonspending and saving goals. Booker advises, During these discussions, its important totry to be open and nonjudgmental. Avoid playing the blame game. I di cult issues orquestions arise, it may help to write down your eelings beore you actually talk about themwith your signifcant other.

Strive to understand your partners perspective.Depending on how couples grew up, they oten havedierent attitudes about money. For example, one maybe a spender while another is a saver. Some eel guiltyabout money; others are compelled to simply avoid the

topic all together. Booker notes, Its common oropposites to attract. So you may have a person who canshop until they drop married to someone who countsevery penny. As the years go by, even couples who startout on the same end o the spectrum may gravitate inopposite directions. When couples dont understand orrespect each others attitudes and point o view regardingfnances, polarization and disagreement are likely to set in.

Divide up the fnancial workload just as you do other chores. When one person controlsthe couples fnances, they also get stuck with the lions share o worry or responsibility.Consider swapping fnancial chores, Booker suggests. For example, i one o you usuallyis responsible or balancing the checkbook or paying the monthly bills, trade o every ewmonths instead. Tis will give each o you a chance to have control. Youll also be surprisedwhat you learn by walking in the others shoes.

When couples maintain an open dialogue about their fnances and work together to becomefscally ft, they also are more likely to gain fnancial security. As a ocus on personal fnance,Booker recommends these exercises:

Set and stick to a budget. CCCS o MD & DE has an easy-to-use interactive budget ormin the Financial ools section o its website at www.cccs-inc.org. Couples who need helpdoing this can also call CCCS at 1-800-642-2227 or a ree budget counseling appointment. Also track your spending and compare notes. Tat way youll both have a better idea o howyou are putting your money to use.

Work together to get organized. One way to do this is to create a amily cash-ow chart.Booker explains how: Using a standard calendar, list your paydays and the amount youexpect to receive in your paycheck. Next, list which bills are to be paid out o each check.Tis eliminates the last-minute scrambling to meet payment due dates, and avoids costlyoverlimit and overdrat ees. Also develop a system or organizing and retaining fnancialrecords. Since its tax season, this is the perect time to shred what you dont need and fle

    what you do.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service o MD & DE, Inc. (CCCS) is an accredited nonproft agency thathas served the local community since 1966. Dont be araid to openly discuss your fnancial situation. I one o you has lost a job, itmay aect your relationship and fnances. Ten brainstorm ways to cut expenses, so thatyoure able to live within your means. I circumstances have changed, its irresponsible tocontinue spending as you did when both o you were employed.

Find ways to increase amily income. I youre employed, but still need more income to liveon, Booker advises, Review your withholding allowances rom your paycheck. Recently, many amilies who live paycheck-to-paycheck have received an income tax reund o over$2,000. Oten, these are the very same people who struggle to make ends meet and couldreally use an extra $200 in their paycheck instead. Te IRS has a helpul page that willhelp you calculate your withholdings. Just go to www.irs.gov, type the words withholdingcalculator into the search box, and ollow the directions they provide. In a matter o minutesyoull learn the appropriate number o withholding allowances or your situation.

Find ways to save money. Having an emergency savings und can help you avoid moneyarguments, because it provides a saety net or when unexpected expenses occur. Bookerexplains, Even small changes in liestyle can leave you with more money in your pocket.I you regularly eat out at work, bringing a lunch rom home instead could leave you withan extra $100 to put into savings each month.

I you get an income tax reund, use it wisely. Catch up on any past due bills, put at least

10 percent into your savings - more i possible, and consider making needed repairs to thehouse or car.

Booker concludes, Couples receive several benefts when they work together to achievefnancial stability: Tey generally experience less stress and fght less, and this ultimatelymay lead to a happier, more secure relationship. A recent Utah State University studyound that marriages where couples work together to achieve fnancial harmony are 30percent less likely to end in divorce.
