World Book Day This year’s celebrations began with a football quiz for pupils in years 7 and 8 in the Resource Centre. Research skills were employed as the teams battled to answer the written questions. The winning team members, who received a football each, were Rhys James, Rhodri Llewelyn Evans and Tom Williams.

A fancy-dress competition was also held in the Resource Centre where year 7 pupils dressed as characters from books. Pictured below are Elin Rees, competition winner Siôn Chambers (who won two books), Ioan Morris, Rhys Bishop, adjudicator Mrs. Pam John, and Willow Meaney.

Waterstones paid a visit this year and pupils were able to exchange their World Book Day Tokens for Welsh and English books. Pictured is Rachel Lewis of Waterstones.

Aberystwyth Schools’ Youth Band’s SuccessOn 19 April a number of Penweddig students competed with the Aberystwyth Schools’ Youth Band in the National Youth Brass Band Championships in the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. There were twelve bands competing in their category, and the Aberystwyth band came 5th – quite an achievement considering the strength of the brass band tradition in the north of England.

Many congratulations to them all! Special thanks are due to their conductor, Mr Alan Phillips, and also to Mr Geraint Evans and Mr Aidan Hassan who helped to prepare them.

Determined Penweddig through to Welsh Schools Football Cup Quarter Final and Semi Final

Penweddig under-14 boys’ team recorded a fine and gritty 1-0 win on January 30 against visitors Bro Dinefwr School, sealing their passage through to the quarter finals of the Welsh Schools Cup.

Penweddig knew early on that they were in for a tough afternoon when they had to defend resolutely on several occasions in the first half. After a fairly nervous ten minutes’ defending, the Penweddig boys got into their normal attacking style and began to threaten the Bro Dinefwr goal.

Bro Dinefwr responded within five minutes with a quick counter-attack which brought a top class save from goalkeeper Tommy Sandford. All the players realised at this stage that it was going to take a mammoth team effort to secure victory. The Penweddig team upped the tempo in the last quarter of the first half and again it was striker Steffan Gittins who brought the best out of the Bro Dinefwr keeper.

Confidence was high at half-time and the Penweddig team increased the pressure on Bro Dinefwr. With both strikers, Shaun Jones and Steffan Gittins, running good angles, and the terrific work rate of captain Osian Rees-Jones came promising goal-scoring opportunities. As the pressure was increased onto the Bro Dinefwr defence it was striker Steffan Gittins who again beat two defenders and with complete composure, rifled a top class curling shot into the top right of the net which left the Bro Dinefwr keeper completely beaten.

Against the run of play a Bro Dinefwr midfield player provided a penetrating pass for their striker which split the Penweddig defence and this again brought a top-class save from keeper Sandford. There followed a very tense ten minutes of play with the score poised at 1-0 and the possibility of Penweddig emulating the success of the Senior Boys’ team in reaching the Welsh Schools Cup quarter final last year.

The strong support that Penweddig had from parents, teachers and fellow pupils, grew anxious knowing it was going to take strong determination and concentration not to concede an equaliser.

Ben Davies leads the Penweddig attack

The final whistle blew and everybody was overjoyed by the momentous efforts of the whole Penweddig under 14 boys’ football team.

Head of PE Clem Thomas said: “All the boys were really motivated to progress further than the senior boys’ team last year, and reach the semi-final stage.

Penweddig then went on to play Brynrefail School, Caernarfon, in the quarter final on 26 February.

They achieved a determined win on their away visit to Brynrefail Comprehensive School in the heart of Snowdonia National Park. Penweddig had to fight back on two occasions to eventually become victors in a penalty shoot-out by 4 goals to 2, sealing their passage through to the semi-finals of the Welsh Schools Under 14 Cup.

Penweddig knew early on that they were in for a tough afternoon when they conceded a very early goal. After a fairly nervous start by the Penweddig team, Brynrefail struck again and they were two down with barely 10 minutes played. Penweddig’s problems were compounded when captain Osian Rhys Jones had to leave the field due to a recurring back problem. He was

replaced by year 8 substitute Dion Ellis Clarke who went on to play a very important role in the outcome of the match. All the players realised at this stage that it was going to take an impressive team effort to secure victory. The Penweddig team upped the tempo in the second half of the first half and on their first attack right midfielder Siôn Evans cut inside and rifled a screamer of a shot past the Brynrefail keeper to reduce the deficit to just one goal.

With both strikers Steffan Gittins and Shaun Jones running good angles and the terrific work rate of Ryan Tyler Evans in midfield, goal scoring opportunities were appearing. The equaliser came from a maze run from substitute Dion Ellis Clarke who beat two defenders and with total composure sent the Brynrefail keeper the wrong way. Confidence was high after the equaliser and the pressure increased on the home team. From the restart the pressure was reapplied on to the Brynrefail defence and it was midfielder Ben Davies who again beat two defenders and had the opportunity to shoot and score to put Penweddig ahead by three goals to two. With only seconds left of the first half, Brynrefail scored from long range to level the score to 3-3 at the interval.

14

Page 15: POBL PENWEDDIG · The club starts at 3.30 and a member of staff is present to assist pupils with their work, especially with Welsh spelling and grammar. The club ends at 4.45 and

The start of the second half did not go according to plan for Penweddig. Although Penweddig were now playing with the help of a strong tailwind, it was the home team who looked the more threatening.

Brynrefail dominated the early possession and a great pass by their midfield player split the Penweddig defence to set up their striker with a gilt-edged scoring opportunity only to see the ball rebound off the woodwork. There followed a very tense fifteen minutes of play with the score poised at three all and the possibility of a penalty shootout.

Other goal scoring opportunities came for Brynrefail but it was only the athleticism of goal keeper Tommy Sandford that kept the scores

level. Entering the last ten minutes a clear opportunity was presented to Penweddig but the final shot went agonisingly wide from Sion Evans. Both Ben Davies and Shaun Jones had near misses that would have sealed the game for Penweddig.

The game ended at 3-3 and a penalty shoot-out loomed. Shaun Jones, Steffan Gittins, Tyrone Evans and Sion Evans showed great composure and nerves of steel to score from the spot for Penweddig. Brynrefail felt the pressure and missed three out of their four penalties. Scenes of jubilation followed as goal keeper Tommy Sandford was declared the hero once again.
