Presidents Trumpet November 2019Greetings all, It looks like summer is now over. The temps are coming down, in fact the temps today have come way down in a hurry. Another sign that summer has ended, we closed out the Texas State Fair. The weather was good, nice and sunny. We had twelve nice cars showing. The Land Rover club had five show. This may not sound like a lot of cars but the space we were given was a little on the small side. Our location was under the big Ferris wheel. A couple of members took some nice photos of our group from the wheel. Hopefully they will be shown around, they were nice pics. With that said the fair was the fair, fried whatever good. After the fair we had the fall cruise. There were eight cars that made the trek. Making our way from Sulphur Springs to Marshall. The weather did not play real nice, it was grey, damp and cool. On the way the roads were good, plenty of trees and country-side to take in. As we made our way, traffic came to a stop, in Winnsboro I believe. As traffic creped along thinking it was construction or an accident, I did see flashing light ahead of us. We started to notice people sitting in chairs along the road. These people would wave to use, weird but OK. After doing a quick Google search found out the there was an antique car parade and we happened to be at the end of it. How exciting. We took over a Sonic for lunch on our route, kind of looked like the commercial with our cars there. Then we made our way to Marshall. All in all it was a good little drive. On a different note, I have been watching a lot of Neil Degrasse Tyson and Star Talk. So just be forewarned that there will be a lot of science coming. Such as, the ocean tides do not go in and out. The tides are always there, in the form of the tidal bulge, and the earth spins though the bulge causing the tides. One final mind bender, if you are able to remove all the empty space between atoms in the human body of all the humans that have ever lived. Here is the brain melting part. What you would be left with would fit in a space smaller then a baseball. Boom!

In Olds we trust, Troy Manges

October 2019 Monthly Meeting Minutes

The October 2019 NTOC monthly meeting was held at the Texas State Fair Car Corral. President Troy Manges called the meeting to order at 10:00 am. Troy wel-comed everyone to the meeting and led us in the pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the country. There were 22 members present and no guests.

Treasurer’s Report Glenn Hargrove was not present at the meeting so no Treasurer’s Report was provided.

Club Spirit ItemsThe new NTOC Club caps and NTOC visors are now available. Caps will be sold for $15.00 and visors will be sold for $12.00. These prices will cover the cost of purchas-ing both items and having the embroidery done. Caps are available in a variety of colors, red, royal blue, white, and charcoal. Visors are available in red, royal blue and white. The caps have the NTOC logo, but the artwork was too large for the visors so they were embroidered with an Oldsmobile logo, a Texas flag, and the letters NTOC

No discussion was held about the purchase of club log decals. We are still trying to find a vendor that can provide both inside and outside versions of the decal. (From a previous meeting minutes) Discussion was held and John LaMonica said he would see if he could find a vendor for the decals and get a price to have 250 made. John LaMonica provided some pricing for the decals. At a quantity of 200 the price is $0.80 each. John was asked to check on pricing of 500 each of inside decals and outside stickers of the Club Logo.

2019 NTOC Annual Charity Donations Recommendations for donations to local charities were made during the meeting.

Safe Haven – A women’s shelter that NTOC has supported for several years. The donation is used to provide Christmas presents and essentials for a family staying at the shelter. In addition to our annual donation Stewart said that the shelter can use bulk items.

Fisher House – The Fisher House is located on the grounds of the Veterans Hospital. They provide a place for families of veterans who are in the hospital a place to stay free of charge for as long as is needed to be with the hospitalized veteran.

Patriot Paws – This is a charity in Rockwall, TX that works with dogs to develop them into service dogs for our veterans. This will be the first year they have been consid-ered as one of our charities. Reports from NTOC members are that this organization is really doing a lot of good work in support of the needs of our veterans.

Car Shows and Events Mustang Cruise in in September Troy reviewed the results of the Mustang Club Cruise-in. We had 16 Oldsmobiles entered and won the club participation award. All Oldsmobiles that were entered won an award.

Fall Cruise through East Texas October 26Harat reviewed plans for a fall cruise through East Texas for the weekend of October 26/27. Planned route maps and a list of activities in Marshall were passed out. This cruise is on the last Saturday in October which will give a break before going to Bas-trop for the Veteran’s Day Car Show.

Fisher House ScheduleThe next lunch for families of veterans who are in the Veteran’s Hospital will be in January 2020. Helena is working with the Fisher House staff to get a schedule for us. Currently we believe the date will be January 18.

The people who manage the Fisher House and the Veteran’s families are very appre-ciative of our support, especially the bags of personal items that Cindy has been put-ting together with the support of all of our members. If you can provide items such as toothbrushes, lotion, shampoo, razors, which are needed when families have to make an emergency trip because a family member is in the hospital it is really appreciated by those who receive them.

Additional Opportunities to Show your OldsmobileFuture NTOC member opportunities:November – Veteran’s Day Car Show in Bastrop. Normally this is a three day event with NTOC members driving down to Bastrop on Friday, participating in the car show on Saturday during the day and a local get-together Saturday evening, returning home on Sunday. The event is sponsored by local merchants to honor veterans.

Autorama NTOC Display WE are looking for a leader to organize the NTOC entry for 2020.In 2019 NTOC had an award winning display with six outstanding Oldsmobiles. NTOC won the best Club Car Display and was presented with a cash award.

For 2020 John Bock has proposed that we enter modified Oldsmobiles in our display to present a little different look. Unfortunately John was in a serious one-vehicle ac-cident and suffered several injuries that will take some time to heal. Several members indicated that they will work with John to develop plans for the NTOC entry in 2020 AutoRama. This will require members to do the “heavy lifting” with John to oversee putting together the program. We will be able to use John’s experience, but not his physical efforts and/or his truck. If you can help with putting the NTOC display to-gether or if you have a modified Oldsmobile you are willing to enter in the AutoRama contact Troy or one of the other NTOC officers so we can coordinate the display.

2020 NTOC Annual Zone Show We are looking for a leader to organize the 2020 NTOC ZONE SHOWThe question of a NTOC Zone Show came up and was discussed. At this time there are no active plans for a Zone Show in 2020. If you are interested in being the chair-person and taking a lead in finding a date and location for a Zone Show please con-tact Troy and Harat or Kendall Workman either by email or at one of the next NTOC meetings.

2020 Trip to Big Bend Country (From October minutes) No discussion on any of these items was held during the meeting.

Discussion was held to see if there is any interest in doing a five (5) day trip to the Big Bend area of Texas. This was proposed last year by Chris Dreiling. The proposal again is to do the road trip to the Big Bend instead of the annual North Central Texas Olds Club Zone Show. There were members who want to hold the NTOC Annual

Zone Show since it is the one time that many of our Olds family get together. Others were in favor of the road trip to Big Bend National Park which provided an entirely new venue for the Olds family to do something different. The discussion was tabled to revisit the subject again to try to come to an agreement so plans could be developed.

Other suggestions were;A Ride-along - Where NTOC members host individuals to ride in their car so people who have not experienced an Oldsmobile would be able to ask questions and per-haps become interested in NTOC.

A Poker Run – This would be set up with locations where participants would drive to each location and receive a sealed envelope containing a playing card. At the end of the Poker Run, the best poker hand wins a portion of the pot. Rules vary for different clubs/locations

Another recommendation was made that Polytronix contact the Buick, and Pontiac clubs to see if there is any interest in having a BOP show with the Oldsmobile club. It was mentioned that past efforts to be inclusive of the other two groups, Buick and Pontiac, did not have much interaction and/or acceptance. That program died for lack of interest on the part of the Buick and Oldsmobile clubs.

Member InformationBill Weismann - Bill’s Parkinson disease is severely debilitating and Bill is now living in a rehab center, Prestonwood Rehabilitation, 2460 Marsh Lane @ Plano Pkwy. Bill continues to be at the rehab center. If you plan to visit him be sure to call to see if it is convenient for him. Call Bill at 972 401-0491.

John Bock – Vince reported that John is doing better.

Margaret Yancey - Juju reported that Margaret is at home. She will have home health care for some time, but is improving.

Lawrence Dagate reported that his mother, Marie, will be having eye surgery and ask for prayers for a successful surgery.

Our prayers and thoughts go out to these members of our Oldsmobile family.

Bryan Lacy reported that he attended the OCA Nationals and that the indoor venue was ideal.

Note from the Secretary: If you are aware of any health or family issues related to NTOC members please send an email to [email protected] so we can in-clude the information in our monthly report.

Fall East Texas Cruisearticle by Gene Crowdis, photos by Harat Manges

Saturday October 26 was clearing up from rain earlier in the week when we gathered up in Sulphur Springs to begin the back highway cruise to Marshall. Sky was overcast, but nothing was falling. Seven NTOC member cars left the hotel at 10:00 am and headed to Marshall. Members attending were Juju and Aron Nance, Cindy and Mike Payton, Ginny and Glenn Hargrove, Jeanette and Ed Bazor, Harat and Troy Manges, Kendall Workman, and Gene Crowdis. Bob Brannan called to say he would join us along the route. He was running just a little late. There were four convertibles in the group and the rule was that if the sun came out we were going to pullover and put the tops down. (Didn’t happen.)

Traffic was pretty light and we drove along just checking out the sides of the high-ways. Not many leaves were changing color. We weren’t even causing a big traffic build-up on the two lane highways. Then we got close to Winnsboro and hit a major traffic jam.

Seems that Winnsboro had their Fall Celebration Parade through the main part of town just before we arrived. People were lined up along the highway to see the parade and they may have thought we were just a late part of the parade. Took over 30 minutes to drive from city limits to city limits. Bob Brannan caught up with us just after we left Winnsboro. Then we were able to continue on our way to Marshall. We did make a pit stop, but decided to find a little nicer facility. After the second pit stop we drove on to Ore City to have lunch at a Sonic. (Ask Kendall about meeting the local story teller.)

The rest of the trip was just a good 60 – 65 mile per hour drive through the East Texas route Harat had planned for us. We got to Marshall pretty early and after meeting outside of a hotel for a few minutes the group broke up. Some staying in Marshall, others going back to Jefferson City or home. I was headed home and in Canton the sun broke through so I pulled over and put the top down. Great ride after that!! Would have been nice to have more participation. Maybe next time.

Jim Warren and I both attended a car show put on my English Color in Richardson on October 2nd. Jim took Best of Show and I managed to finish in the Top 30. I have included a picture of us parked side by side.

On November 2nd one of my car buddies invited me to participate in a parade at the CC Young Retirement Center in Dallas. There were only six cars in the parade and was just around the grounds of CC Young. I had the honor and privilege of carrying the two Grand Marshalls of the parade. Before I arrived I had no idea who they were. Here is some bio on them.

Orville Rogers is 101 and will be 102 on November 28th. He trained pilots during WWII and then served in the Korean War. He flew the B36 on secret missions and was the pilot of a crew that was prepared to drop and atomic bomb on Russia and return to Fort Worth during the cold war. He started running when he 50 years old after he read Dr. Ken Cooper’s book. He currently holds 15 world records for running of which two were set when he was 100 years old. He competed in Masters Athletics when he was 90 and 95. He served as a pilot for Braniff International for 31 years. He has run an estimated 42,000 miles.

Bernice Press turned 100 years old this year. She is a native Texan and was a WWII nurse. She meet her husband at the Navy hospital in Long Beach, CA when she took care of him. They made their home in California after the war. and she moved back to Texas after her husband passed away. She has been a resident of CC Young for 25 years.

There are several hotels nearby on Central Expressway for members who want to stay overnight rather than drive home after the party. Aboca’s has been paid a deposit to hold the room which was paid before April 15.

Inside this Issue

by Troy Manges
