1 ~~PRINCIPAL’S REPORT~~ Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 16 Term: 4 Tuesday 31 st October, 2017 Some great news to report - our final tally for Year 12 fundraising for headspace has come in. An enormous thank you to the Leeton Community, Business Houses and to our students for their tireless fundraising over the last 12 months. We raised a massive $9272.25 for such a worthy mental health support service. Since our last newsletter our very fortunate girls in Years 9 and 10 participated in the amazing You Go Girl! Program organised by Miss Becker and Mrs Speer. This program is unique to our school and our students, based on a holistic approach to empowering young women for their future careers and to nurture a positive and aspirational mindset. The girls were involved in a variety of workshops built around Careers and Wellbeing led by some inspiring female role models from our community and further afield. We are extremely grateful that these generous and talented guest speakers gave their time to make our day such a worthwhile and positive event for our girls. Students were split into four Tribes each led by female staff members, Mrs Stout, Miss Lucas, Mrs Schmetzer and Mrs Crelley. Each Tribe took part in four workshops (Pow Wows) listed below on a rotating basis throughout the day. #GirlPower- My future: Vision boarding led by Kaedi Speer, Team Leader at Corowa Shire Council, an impressive position for someone who is just 22 years old. #GirlBoss: Local influential female business entrepreneurs Kate O’Callaghan, Director, Southern Cotton, and Liane Sayer Roberts, Director, Sauce Communication, spoke to the girls on their different study and career pathways that have led them to this point in their careers- being the ‘girl boss’ of very prominent and successful local business ventures. #Namaste: Yoga, meditation and mindfulness strategies led by Deral Weir owner of Studio 9 to encourage positive wellbeing and self-awareness for success. #ShatterIt: provided students with insights into females succeeding in male dominated work roles led by Tara Cassidy, Warehouse Manager, Sunrice and Emma Tyrrell, an electrician, also at Sunrice. Last but certainly not least was the final workshop which all students attended called #Volunteer Warrior led by Sue Gavel, owner of Wellness Ten Park Avenue, who shared her fantastic life experiences as a volunteer and snapshots of her role as Program Manager for LYNVET LINKS now called Get Set a local organisation that our school currently works very closely with. Thank you again to all our inspirational guest speakers, Miss Becker and Mrs Speer for their organisation and enormous effort in getting this day off the ground and the Hungry Hut for the superb catering job. Years 7-10 Yearly Examinations Just a reminder that Year 10 final examinations commence this week and Years 7-9 examinations begin the following week. Year 10 have received their examination timetables and are encouraged to prepare thoroughly for their final yearly tests as are students in Years 7-9. If students are absent for any examinations, then they need to see their teacher immediately on their return. Attendance Attendance concern letters were sent out at the end of last week. It is incredibly important that students attend school on a regular basis to encourage quality learning. All students enrolled in school are expected to attend on a regular basis which is 85% or higher as determined by the Department of Education. Please contact the school to make an appointment to discuss any attendance concerns with myself or Mr Morschel on 0269532122. World Teachers Day Last Friday was World Teachers' Day celebrated in Australia on the last Friday in October each year. It is important to acknowledge that every day teachers make a difference as they inspire and engage young people to learn and succeed. I am very proud to be in the teaching profession and I would like to thank all the teachers across the Leeton Community of Public Schools for the great work that they do and also acknowledge the support staff that assist our teachers in their work.

Leeton High School recognises and values the importance of communication between home and school. If you have any questions on any issue, please do not hesitate to call us on 69532122. Stay in touch with the happenings at our community high school via the School Website http://www.leeton-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/ or our Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/LeetonHS. YEAR 7 EXAM PREPARATION TIPS The exam period is something that Year 7 students are sometimes unsure about as it can be quite different to primary school. Timetables for the exams will be given out to students this week and I’ll be sending a list of study tips home with Year 7 students. A few tips to get you started:

Teachers will often give hints about what work to focus on for your exam, so pay attention

in class!

If you need a bit of extra help, take advantage of the homework centre after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Make sure you bring the required equipment to your exams – pens, pencil, ruler and eraser at a minimum.

CARE PACKAGE DONATIONS Our names are Taylor Moore and Hannah Pianca, As a part of the 2017 Youth Frontiers Get Set Mentoring Program we have been working with our mentor Krystal Roden to create care packs for disadvantaged young women. The care packs will contain general hygiene products such as: * Deodorant * Body wash and soap * Shampoo and conditioner * Hair brush * Tooth brush and toothpaste * Feminine hygiene products The packages will be distributed through both the High School Girls’ adviser and the Leeton Community Op Shop. Donations of any of these items may be dropped off at the high schools front office, the Personnel Group or the Get Set Office.

Congratulations to the following students on achieving awards:

SILVER AWARD: Charlie Longhurst (Year 7).

EXECUTIVE AWARDS: Lilly Hillier (Year 7), Alex Corneliusen (Year 8), Makayla Broadbent (Year 9), Tess Chilby

(Year 10) and Alanis Wortley (Year 11).
