Overview of PMBOK® • The PMBOK® Guide is subset of the Project

Management Body of Knowledge that is generally recognized as good practice.

• The PMBOK® Guide also provides and promotes a common lexicon for discussing, writing, and applying project management. Such a standard lexicon is an essential element of a profession.

• The Project Management Institute uses this document as a foundational, but not the sole, project management reference for its professional development programs CAPM® and PMP®

Overview of PMBOK® • PMBOK describes the nature of project

management processes in terms of the integration between the processes, the interactions within them, and the purposes they serve. These processes are aggregated into five groups, defined as the Project Management Process Groups:1. Initiating Process Group2. Planning Process Group3. Executing Process Group4. Monitoring & Controlling Process Group5. Closing Process Group.

Overview of PMP®

• Initiated in 1984• Demonstrate understanding of the knowledge

and skills to lead and direct project teams and to deliver results within the constraints of schedule, budget, and resources

• PMP credential ensure that all of the aspects of the project plan are executed and that progress and variances are properly addressed and communicated.

• They are responsible for all aspects of the project for the life of the project and not only lead and direct the project, but also oversee project team members.

Overview of CAPM®• Initiated in 2003• CAPM recognizes individuals with a

demonstrated understanding of the fundamental knowledge, processes, and terminology as defined in PMBOK® Guide

• The CAPM credential candidate contributes to a project team as a subject matter expert and may also serve as a sponsor, facilitator, liaison, or coordinator. These project team members assume full or partial responsibility for individual project tasks in their areas of expertise (e.g., finance, marketing, legal), which may not be industry-specific, but relevant across many functional areas and industries.
