Community Corner

Recently I have re-engaged with our PMI Memphis Chapter. I have served as a volunteer, supporting the Chapter, since 2001. Although I have continued to mentor MIS students, at the University of Memphis, my #1 long-term project is my little girl Jackie, age 4, who did not leave me much time to attend Chapter meetings and events in the past. At the December meeting at the University of Memphis, I noticed how much the chapter has changed in the last four years. There were some familiar faces, but many of the people I started out with, are now retired or have moved out of the area. The companies represented are different, an other than the PDD, even the events and activities have changed. But what caught my attention at this meeting was the activity and excitement generated by our identity as a small organization that has had a significant impact in the community. I remember enjoying this in the past, and I wanted to experience that enjoyment again. I decided to renew my commitment and become an active member of the

Memphis Chapter once again. In March, I conducted my first Chapter-sponsored PMP Prep class in over four years. The PMBOK has changed at least twice since the last time I taught, and it had been 11 years since I took the exam. Nevertheless, the essentials remain the same. On the first day of class, I faced a room full of people, all wanting to know how to unravel the mystery of the certification exam. The students were not so focused on how to manage a real-life project, because there were project managers who were far more experienced than me in the room, but were interested in the exam construction itself. For seven nights we worked through the challenges of mastering the PMP Exam. I was deeply moved to be working with an instructor team that included people who were my students a few years earlier. The current students learned from the instructors and we learned from the students as well. I believe in the Project Management profession. It is more than a skill set or a competency. That is why I have served as a chapter officer, an instructor, and a mentor in the years since receiving my own certification. That is why I help anyone who is striving to attain success in project management. Effective project management can make a difference in this city. We must empower our profession here where we live.
