Overview• Muon beamline reliable, decay solenoid now being cooled in
readiness for July user run• Target development is going very well, re-engineered target
has been formally accepted by ISIS as technical baseline• FC #1 manufacture is progressing, coil winding is complete,
but cold mass supports critical path now, but overall very good progress
• RF cavity production well on schedule, but LBNL effort rightly transferred to spectrometer solenoids
• Spectrometer solenoids – approval of repair plan late – expert controversy over quench protection, but resolved now
• 2MVA substation upgrade – installed and working ahead of schedule
• Diffuser – steady progress, but limited by available effort• PPS - DSA system now formally handed over to ISIS• First (ten) EMR planes delivered by June 13th, installation
planned for July user run – it’s here, assembly started• LH2 R&D system, ready for cooldown with He next week• LH2 absorber #1, delivered last week

Reconstructing the schedule
• The MICE Project Board (MPB) requested that MICE presents a credible top-level project schedule by 28th June
• MICE had a two-day internal schedule review to prepare for this:• List of major sub-systems• Schedules presented• Resource limitations• Risks and difficulties
• Went very well, almost 100% engagement from the project• New plan is under construction, aim to:
• Assimilate all the information by 10th June• Approval by MICE Executive Board by 17th June• Deliver to MPB 18th June

Reconstructing the schedule
• We will be able to present a detailed schedule for Step IV• Steps V & VI will be as accurate as possible, but qualified with
statement that they are subject to the Coupling Magnet uncertainties – still a major project risk
• A hard cut-off point for MICE will be the long ISIS shutdown for moderator change in August 2014
• We will aim to achieve a major constructional and/or scientific goal by then
• Right now, I don’t know what it is...• We hope it can be Step V• The top-level schedule will contain a more detailed breakdown
of each step configuration

Organisation and Project Management
• Thanks to the cooperation of several people, we can now put names to our UK Project Management model – see last OsC:• UK Project Manager – Alan Grant• System Engineer – Tim Hayler• Project Associate – Andy Lintern
• Very unfortunately, we’ve lost Willie Spensley (Hall Manager and Principal Contractor)• This is a major blow – provision of a PC is a legal
responsibility for STFC within the CDM framework and Willie has made a huge contribution to MICE
• Andy N, aided by Vishal Francis, will deputise until we have a replacement (not ideal)
• I believe we must have an STFC employee in the post; this is already in progress

• US magnet programme is now led by Steve Gourlay at LBNL• He is able to re-direct resources and set local priorities - crucial
• UK is providing the magnet co-ordination partnership• Roy Preece (engineering) has been on LTA in US since April• Mike Courthold (magnetic systems) travelling and reviewing
extensively• Magnet workshop at LBNL mid-May, very useful
• Aimed to collect all available information on spectrometer solenoid recovery
• Clear up active/passive quench protection (QP) discussion• Clarify route to MAP approval
• Mostly done; QP was cleared up yesterday – it can be passive – easier construction, minimal cost, easier for MAP to approve
• It’s now a question of putting it into practice at Wang – Roy is already making a big difference there

• First Coil is complete at Qi-Hian – major milestone• Fabrication of cold mass jacket and helium tubes has started• Cryostat design is complete – another major milestone• 261 manufacturing drawings of high standard have been
issued for review• Formal review probably at SINAP during August• AN has been invited – Jason Tarrant (MICE integration
Engineer will also be involved• Testing of coil likely in US now – Florida State University has
big enough cryostat• Unfortunately cannot predict final RFCC module delivery due
to US/China uncertainties, but we’re slowly getting under the skin
• Have started the complex integration of CC in MICE Hall discussion – the CC has put on weight since the last effort!

• Recent progress at Tesla has been good:• Coil is wound and of good quality• Manufacture of vessel and turret going well in parallel• Cryo-cooler performance being qualified by physical tests• Installing quench heaters• Potting and welding cover plates
• Things still worry about:• Testing the FC and field mapping at RAL – likely in R9, but need
experts to work out how to do it (proximity of ferromagnetic infrastructure) Magnet also needs independent support structure
• Accurate co-axial setting of cold mass in vessel• Cold mass support design needs to be finalised
• But it’s encouraging news – looks like September delivery

• Going well both inside and outside MICE Hall• R&D system almost ready to test with LHe• Have slipped a month or so due to hole in pre-cool circuit• Now need final leak-test of transfer line• Work on roof in final stages• Control system (and UPS) and extract fans has been exercised• No real problems with ISIS/SHE negotiations• Taking opportunity to design/install extensive pipework for
systems two and three

• Was finished two days ahead of schedule• Formally handed over to MICE on 27th May• All circuits back on 11KV supply now• Went exceptionally well – minimal disruption to project and to
ISIS• Most of the bill got paid in last FY• All credit must go to BPG and JW Morris Ltd• MICE now has a secure power supply for Step VI

Space, Staffing and Skills
• Permission given by the RALEC in March for MICE to use all of R9 – very good news
• NMR magnet is on its way out soon• MICE needs to adapt the place a bit – design work started at
IC• Vital that we use this space for parallel assembly of RF and
magnets while Step IV is data-taking (one year) and before that
• Availability of staff in DL electrical group is becoming a major worry
• 100% application of some posts (design and installation) will be required very soon if we are to deliver:• RF systems• Solenoid controls
