PLYMOUTH - FROM DESTRUCTION TO CONSTRUCTIONHouse of Fraser, Floor 5, 40-46 Royal Parade, Plymouth PL1 1DYSaturday 5 May to Sunday 3 June (continues throughout 2018)Monday and Wednesday to Saturday, 9am to 5pmTuesday, 9.30am to 5pmSunday, 10am to 4pmLast entries 30 minutes before closingPlymouth suffered greatly during World War II. The docks and naval base made it a major target resulting in the almost total destruction of the city centre and the displacement of tens of thousands of Plymothians.Amongst this charred and ruined city, a radical new plan was developed to enable its complete redesign and reconstruction. MPs, Councillors

and planners sought out the finest architects, designers and artists to create a new city – a modern city – worthy of replacing what had been lost. The city we see today epitomises the ambition and vision of this post-war planning.This exhibition includes fascinating objects, images and footage from the collections of Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office and the South West Film and Television Archive that explore the themes of destruction and reconstruction. Visitors of all ages can experience the inside of an Anderson Shelter, dress up in a range of replica clothing and learn more about the construction of House of Fraser itself.Free / No need to book.

LEGAL TYRANNY: CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION IN THE THREE TOWNS 1853 – 1914Historic Cells, Devonport Guildhall, Ker Street, Plymouth PL1 4ELSaturday 5 May to Saturday 2 June Monday to Saturday, 10am to 3pm This interactive exhibition is curated by staff and students from The University of Plymouth’s School of Law, Criminology and Government on the theme of social policy initiatives, state intervention and personal choice. Displays and apps explore aspects of the festival themes particularly enlightenment, scientific thought and public health. The focus is on local reactions in the Three Towns to laws compelling parents to have their infants vaccinated against smallpox before the age of 6 months. If you were poor the health implications of vaccination could be dangerous and even fatal. Participants and audiences will be invited to consider the personal moral choices they would make when presented with real life historic dilemmas about their family’s health and well-being, and the effect their decisions would have on both themselves and their communities. Those who objected to having their children vaccinated created a group of people known as ‘conscientious objectors’. This presentation will explain how the concept of ‘conscientious objection’ later came to be associated with the Great War and the Military Act 1916. It will also highlight some of the powerful modern echoes with the contemporary resistance from some parents to the MMR vaccine.Please be aware there may be some medical images that might not be suitable for very young children.Free / No need to book / For more information visit www.devonportguildhall.org

Where the greatest explorer is youThe Box, Plymouth is a major redevelopment scheme and a symbol for the city’s current regeneration and future. We are transforming the Museum and Art Gallery, former Central Library and St Luke’s Church buildings into a new, unique cultural attraction that highlights Plymouth and its place in the world.

The Box will be a museum for the 21st century and so much more, with extraordinary gallery displays, high profile artists and art exhibitions and exciting events that take visitors on a journey from pre-history to the present and beyond.

Led by Plymouth City Council, The Box is a partnership with the University of Plymouth, the South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA), the South West Image Bank (SWIB) and the National Museum of the Royal Navy. Major funding for the project has been secured from the City Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council England, Coastal Communities Fund, Garfield Weston Foundation, University of Plymouth, Wolfson Foundation and Interreg. theboxplymouth.com

@theboxplymouth

While building and construction work takes place and staff are busy preparing all the objects that are required for The Box, an ‘On Tour’ programme is bringing exhibitions, events, partnership and community projects to a range of offsite venues.

We also continue to be a part of major arts and heritage events in the city such as the Plymouth History Festival and the Plymouth Art Weekender. The Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, SWFTA and SWIB are open as usual and will remain so until late 2019.

The Box is set to open in spring 2020 as Plymouth’s flagship building for the commemorations of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World.
