SCHROTH has been designing andmanufacturing seatbelt harness systems sincethe 1950’s and have now put over 60 years ofdevelopment and crash test experience into anew patent pending mine blast protectedseating solution.

Over two years of design and developmentwork has been trialed and tested at theindependent test facility of IABG in Lichtenau,Germany. Multiple full-scale mine blast testhave been carried out at the end of 2011 on thenew light-weight seat systems.

The SCHROTH SU-62 (forward facing) and SU-63 (side facing) seating systems are tubularlightweight systems with a unique resettableenergy absorbing (EA) system designed into theseat. The EA design and technology comesfrom the years of experience SCHROTH haswith energy management in seatbelt systems.

The design of the seat gives the occupant notonly excellent protection in a mine blast event, but also offers excellent protection in the eventof an accident or impact. The All Belts to Seat(ABTS) design allows the vehicle manufacturerto optimize the installation of the seat withinthe hull. An integrated foot rest can also beincorporated into the standard SU-62 seatingsystem to further extend the range of occupantprotection.

The unique SCHROTH EA technology is tunableto match the size and weight of the vehicle aswell as the level of protection required and theavailable space within the vehicle interior. TheEA is also designed to reset itself and offer highlevels of protection for the secondary (slamdown) event.

The successful development and verification ofthe SU-62 seating system exceeded the

requirements of the current AEP55 using fullscale testing to the most extreme conditions.

The verification test platform (TROSS II) wasprepared in order to represent maximum globalaccelerations with worst case loading of theprotective seating system and at the mostvulnerable test location. The test platform wasfully instrumented with the data acquisitionsystems and high-speed cameras.

Part of the demanding qualification programwas a test representing a 12ton vehicle with a8kg charge of TNT under the center of thevehicle.

With the current reduction on military budgetsand the ongoing pressure to increasesurvivability on new and existing vehicle fleets,SCHROTH has found an attractive blend ofaffordability and improved survivability for theyears to come.

SCHROTH will be presenting the latest versionsof the SU-62 (forward facing) and SU-63 (sidefacing) seating at the International ArmouredVehicles conference, taking place on February21 & 22, 2012 in Farnborough UK.
