All I can say is that I’m not going to be unhappy about this winter ending. It has been miserable. Spring will soon be upon us and the joys of being able to be outside will lift our spirits. The real thing about Spring is the March madness NCAA basketball tournament. I hope State and U of M represent our great state of Michigan well. I’m sure nothing else is important about March.
Last month (February) we had a presentation on the subject of killing a perfectly good pump connected to
cooling towers. The program was hosted by the R.L. Deppmann Co. - Norm Hall, PE gave the session. It was very informative and well attended. Thank you Norm!
Our standard caterer, Ginny is still recovering so our usual excellent catered dinner was not to be. We look forward to having her back with those wonderful meals we have come to expect. Get well soon Ginny, we miss you!
I need to make note that our meeting is on March 11th, the second week of March versus the third Tuesday of the month. This change is due the celebration of World Plumbing Day. We are planning to have a special event that evening on this date. We will still have our Technical session with the subject on Natural Gas system design. The special event is going to be a “Pinewood” car race. Yes, just like the ones we had when we were in the “Boy Scouts”. Car Kits were made available and still are, for sculpting that perfect racer. If you would like a car to build contact Bill Grayzar at DiClemente-Siegel Design, Inc., (248)569-1430. Oh, did mention they are
with the car kit. There will be prizes for the fastest car and other categories, who says we don’t have fun.
Tech topics are something that we will continue to review so that the evening tech program will be informative and interesting. No subject is out of reach, as ASPE has a collection of specialists to bring an informative session. Please, if there is a subject that you would like to see at our general membership meeting, drop us a note.
The John E Mathews Scholarship program is alive and well. We presented a check for $1,000.00 to a junior engineering student at Lawrence Tech University. He is an employee at MA Engineering in Birmingham, and is actively pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. If you know a student at one of our local universities, a third year student and in a Mechanical Engineering program please have this person contact John Nussbaum for

3 ASPE News - Eastern Michigan Chapter
John Nussbaum, IPP, FASSE/ASPEWorld Plumbing Day takes place annually on March 11th. The Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE has moved its March meeting from March 18th to March 11th 2014 to coincide with this date. The World Plumbing Council (WPC) Mission statement is “to promote the role of
plumbing in improving public health and safeguarding the environment, by uniting the World Plumbing
WPC timeline History & ASSE, 1985 - there was a gathering of representatives of many plumbing organizations worldwide to discuss the need for a world plumbing organization to unify the plumbing industry.
that took place in Sydney, Australia where Geoff Marsh was
As ASSE’s International President Elect and the Executive Director of Plumbing Heating & Cooling Contractors Association of Southeastern Michigan, I had the honor and privilege to attend the second triennial in London, England from May 28 - June 2, 1990 at the Barbican, with PHCC of Southeastern Michigan’s President, Steve Munson and Kenneth Krauska, President of P.H.C.C. Kenneth and I were the only two chosen to speak from the United States. Kenneth was the second from the last to address the conference and I was the last to speak at this historical event.
This unique International conference had 1300 contractors and spouses representing 31 countries. This number did not take into account, the manufacturers’ trade show & work shop speakers, Regulatory or Governmental People and Safety and
Europeans already distinguished them-selves by recognizing there were differences between industry, as in auto assembly line manufacturing and craft industry where every job is different, the job and the craftsman carry a personal responsibility for it.
1992 - ASSE joined the WPC through its contacts with the Institute of Plumbing (IOP) in England by Richard Toder. It was determined that the ASSE International President attend future triennial meetings. 1992’s Conference dealt with what can be expected of the Plumbing Industry beginning in 1992, and through the turn of the century. Euro 92’ was the beginning of what was to be a tariff free world that would affect our businesses here in the United States. It was said that the trade barriers between the U.S. and Canada would be gone. Triennial meetings that followed took place as follows: 1993 - Hong Kong; 1996 – Chicago; 1999 - Sun City, South Africa; 2002 - Berlin, Germany; 2005 - Auckland, NZ; 2008 - Calgary, Canada; 2011 Edinburgh, Scotland; 2013 New Delhi, India.
In 2011, ASPE became involved, thanks to the forward thinking of ASPE’s President Bill Hughes, CPD, LEED and AP, FASPE and Jim Kendzel, MPH, CAE, Executive Director & CEO and the ASPE Board of Directors. Jim, in my opinion has brought ASPE into the 21st century. He understood the need to reach out to ASSE, IAPMO, ASHRAE, the U.A., MCAA, PHCC Association, Ci of P & H. and PMI. In reaching out to these groups he has been instrumental getting these groups together to face plumbing
in solving them. The group is known as the Plumbing Industry Leadership Coalition and meets annually. If you had not heard Jim Kendzel is on the Board of Directors of the World Plumbing Council. Speaking of the W.P.C., Ronald L George was a speaker at the 2013 triennial meeting in New Delhi, India. In closing I would be remiss if I left out Julius Ballanco whose foresight, devotion and resources were there to move ASPE in the forward direction that has taken place. John E. Matthews inspired and mentored many of us who have come forward to lead us in becoming the successful chapter that the Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE has become. My thanks go out to Rich Prospal for some of the information he provided me to use in this article.
