Plenary 3: Beyond the Long-Form Census ~
• Implications of changes in the long-form census
• How to minimize the impact – can we fill the gap?
• What may be needed to gather important information?
• How has this resulted in new partnerships and new public health advocates?
Speakers and outline• Introductory remarks and a “case study” from Patricia
Martens (10 minutes)
• Remarks from Gilles Paradis (15 minutes) (will be in French)
• Remarks from Beth Wilson (15 minutes)
• Questions and comments from audience (15 minutes)

MCHP FrameworksGeography (RHAs and sub-regions)
– Use postal and municipal codes to create regional regional analyses
– Sometimes geographies are arranged by PMR (premature mortality rate) for a framework of underlying regional health status
Census-based:– Income quintile analyses; SEFI (socio-economic
economic factor index)– “virtual” areas grouped across the province

Martens and Burchill, based upon data from from Brownell et al. 2008
Using “virtual” areas by grouping income quintiles (based on long-form census DA average household income)
About ½ (45%) of teen pregnancies occur in the 1/5 of the teens who are in the lowest income quintile group
(Martens et al. 2010)
Who is your audience?• Although geography is easier for
regional/provincial planners, the real real message is sometimes lost if we we don’t have good SES data at the the population level
• Regression modelling … w e NEED to NEED to see that it’s mostly about about SES, not necessarily “geography” as such
