Denver St., Holyoke Lunch By Steger BBQ By Ken McDowell Sports Editor MONTROSE – The Sterling Tiger stepped up big time in the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament Friday and Saturday in Montrose to place second out of 14 teams with 187 points. Delta was the overall team winner with 266.5 points. In addition, the Tigers will send 8 grapplers to the Class 3A State Tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Qualifying for state by placing in the top 4 at the regional tournament were senior Jacob Beltran, first at 106 lbs.; junior Colby Duncan, first at 113 lbs.; senior Joel Contreras, first at 152 lbs.; sophomore Jacob Breidenbach, second at 120 lbs.; junior Erick Krier, fourth at 138 lbs.; senior Patrick Holtzhauser, fourth at 195 lbs.; senior Zach Little, fourth at 220 lbs. and sophomore Fabian Soto, fourth at 285 lbs. Last year in the Class 3A State Tournament, Contreras was the state champion in the 145 lb. class and he is the favored to win in the 152 lb. division. Duncan was the runner-up in the 113 lb. class last and is ranked number 1 in that division heading into the state tournament this weekend. Beltran placed third in the 106 lb. class at state last year and is ranked second this season. Making their first trips to the state tournament for the Tigers are Breidenbach, Krier, Holtzhauser, Little and Soto. The last time Sterling qualified 8 wrestlers to state was in 1997 in the Class 4A State Tournament. Those members were Will Strecker, Joey Marick, Matt Russell, Alan Anderson, Tracy Bower, Pat Akers, Philep Wiley and Zeb Miller. Anderson placed second in the 135 lb. class and Wiley was runner-up at 215 lbs. The most Sterling has sent to state in recent history was 9, and that was in 1991. “It’s very positive that we are sending 8 wrestlers to the state tournament this year,” said Sterling Coach Chad Duncan. “I thought we wrestled well in the regional tournament, especially since it was a different style of wrestling and the kids had to make several adjustments to be successful.” Coach Duncan added that it’s also positive that 5 of the Sterling wrestlers are making their first trip to the state tournament. “It’s positive because four of them are underclassmen and that bodes well for our future,” he said. “Hopefully they will wrestle like it’s not their first time there and have a chance to place. “It’s also good that Zach (Little) gets to end his high school wrestling career by going to state. Once you’re there anything can happen and the biggest thing is for the kids to perform to their potential.” Results for the Tigers in the regional tournament are: Team scores – Delta, 266.5; Sterling, 187; Olathe, 178; Eagle Valley, 119; Pagosa Springs, 117.5; Montezuma-Cortez, 100; Bayfield, 98.5; Moffat County, 95; Rifle, 92; Steamboat Springs, 77.5; Basalt, 62; Grand Valley, 32; Gunnison, 35; coal Ridge, 34. 106 lbs. – Jacob Beltran, 1 st – Won by fall in :53 over Chris Moschetti, Moffat County; won by 8-2 decision over Andrew Godfrey, Olathe; won by fall in 5:25 over Luke Anderson, Delta. 113 lbs. – Colby Duncan, 1 st : Won by fall in 1:08 over Cooper Braun, Basalt; won by fall in 1:10 over Jake Sandrey, Bayfield; won by 4-0 decision over Justin Odell, Gunnison. 120 lbs. – Jacob Breidenbach, 2 nd : Won by fall in 3:36 over Pedro Valentin, Gunnison; won by fall in 3:38 over Ryan Zimmerman, Moffat County; won by 908 decision over Dakota Thvedt, Steamboat Springs; lost by 15-4 major decision to Noah Hermosillo, Tigers second in regional tourney; Sending eight to state Please See Pairings Page 25 The Sterling Tigers will send eight grapplers to the Class 3A State Tourna- ment this weekend at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
