BackgroundEarth 911 is a for-profit organization that helps connect consumers with accessible and actionable information about recycling. With a well established online presence they use their website to relay important news, how-to’s, and do and don’ts around getting trash sorted correctly for proper disposal. Something that is quite predominant on their website is their list of things that should not make their way into the landfills. To help reiterate this message for them in a more visual and interactive form an interactive illustration will be drawn up for display on their website with supporting information as to why certain materials should be recycled. This should help to engage their visitors while informing them simultaneously.

Target AudienceEarth 911’s visitors are: neither mostly male or nor female, in their mid 20’s to mid 40’s, with a college education, earning approximately $36,000 - $60,000, and own their own homes.

ObjectivesAfter interacting with this illustration the target audience should understand the importance of separating disposed items. They should make an effort to properly and safely throw away items that may prove harmful to the environment if thrown in a landfill with other trashed items.

ObstaclesThe main obstacles that stand in the way of achieving our set objectives are proper exposure to information and laziness of our viewers to follow through completely with separation of recyclables. Exposure is a problem because most people do not know what happens to an item once it makes its way to a landfill.

Key BenefitThe point that needs to be conveyed through the illustration is that recycling can be easy and have a huge impact on the reduction of landfills accross the United States. By properly disposing of trash items we can help preserve our environment.

Support StatementsEveryone should know the outcome of things that make their way into landfills. Somethings out there will never break down or degrade without proper recycling and handling. By having an easy to operate informative illustration people can see that what they do directly affects the environment we live in.

ToneThe tone of this piece will be authoritative in it’s content but light in it’s appearance. Authority is necessary in the information delivered because the audience needs to fully understand the seriousness of the subject and why it should be taken sincerely. On the other hand the illustration and feel of the information being delivered shoulf be light to reinforce the fact that recycling is not a hard concept to follow and can be fun.

MediaThis piece will be a guide for site developers to code into a viewable and interactive web version. Its illustrator and Acrobat dimensions will have a max-width of 874 pixels and a max-height of 620 pixels.

Please Recycle MeRoll over trash to find out how long they take to decompose, & how to properly dispose of each item.

Everything shown here are the most commonly thrown away items that

should be properly recycled.

The trash production in the United States increases by the year. This trash is handled in various ways. About 34.1 percent of the trash is recycled or composted, 11.7 percent is burned and 54.2 percent is buried in landfills [source: EPA 2010].

Electronic waste is toxic to the environment when biodegrading in landfills and can be estimated to last thousands of years.

To recycle e-waste make sure to: remove all personal information and batteries, and take it to a e-waste recycling center in your city.

1

The most common type of plastic bags can take around 500 years to decompose once they have reached a landfill.

To recycle plastic bags make sure to: either dispose of them in city supplied recycle bins or take them to a grocery store for disposal.

2

The vulcanized rubber found in tires degrades very slowly. Tires have no clearly estimated degradation time.

To recycle tires make sure to: remove the rim and take the tires to an automative garage.

3

Plastic bottles contain Polyethylene Terephthalate which takes anywhere from 500 to 1000 years to degrade in a landfill.

To recycle plastic bottles make sure to: place them into a city provided recycling bin.

4

Glass is infinitely recyclable and if it makes its way to a landfill it will remain there forever.

To recycle glass bottles make sure to: place them into a city provided recycling bin.

5

Styrofoam has no identifiable break down time and can last forever in a landfill.

To recycle styrofoam make sure to: remove all labels, rinse clean, and dispose of it in the recycling bin provided to you by your city.
