FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My dear people,

Ready or not, Lent begins this Wednesday! On Tuesday evening our Men’s Club will not have its regular meeting but will offer a free pancake supper for Shrove Tuesday. Look elsewhere in this bulletin for details. Ash Wednesday is not a holyday of obligation but it is a day of fast and abstinence. This Friday, like all Fridays of Lent, is a day of abstinence from meat. So, what is this fast and abstinence all about? These are our Church’s communal observance of penance. We live as a group, we pray as a group and Mother Church calls us to penance as a group. The Church’s law of abstinence from meat obliges all those 14 years and older. Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from all meat that comes from warm blooded animals. The last of fast obliges those ages 18-59. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only days of mandatory fasting during Lent. On these days, only one full meal may be taken. Two lesser meals may be eaten to sustain strength but the combined amount of the two lesser meals should not exceed the one full meal. The mitigation of the laws of fasting in recent times is not meant to de-emphasize the importance of penance and mortification. Rather, we are encouraged to personal and voluntary choices of penance best suited to our spiritual growth.

Elsewhere in this bulletin, you will find the FOUR scheduled times when you can receive ashes. Let me give you my annual exhortation: the reception of ashes is a corporate expression of the community as we enter this season of penitence. Other than the homebound, we come together to hear the Word of God and respond in this communal sign that we are seeking to turn our hearts to God more deeply. This is a long way of asking that individuals do not request “drive by ashes” on Wednesday.

Among the works of mortification, I remind you that classic spiritual writers tell us that the first step in this process is to “fulfill well the duties of one’s state in life”. This means devoting our attention to the duties that come with being a husband, father, wife, mother, student, priest, teacher, plumber, carpenter, architect, nurse, doctor … whatever the vocation to which God has called us. Of course, there are also personal sacrifices of certain foods or substances, or amounts of food or the like. Not only do we give up legitimate goods and pleasures, but we try to take on extra prayer and other spiritual practices such as weekday Mass, Nocturnal Adoration, Bible Study, and the Stations of the Cross. There are three great works of Lent: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I encourage you to use these days before Ash Wednesday to seek the grace to know how you might best practice these works this year.

Under normal circumstances, we would start next Wednesday with our popular devotion of Stations, Soups and Sandwiches. At our last Parish Council meeting, we looked at our situation with the refinishing of our pews (Hurricane Irma damage) and realized we might not be able to have Soups and Sandwiches in the Hall next week as some of our pews are in there awaiting refinishing. This would not allow space for soups and sandwiches. And we are not sure exactly when we will be back in the church after the floors are refinished. For the present, we have cancelled Stations, Soups and Sandwiches on Feb. 21 with a hope to begin Feb. 28. Stay posted for further developments. Likewise, we keep hoping to get back in the church soon. It is likely we will first be in there on folding chairs. Whatever the case, we are inconvenienced, but remember: we are looking at Lent.

WOMENS CLUB – THANKS

Thanks and blessings to all who helped with, worked with and bought from the Bette Griffith Food Fest and Auction on November 19th. You blessed us with your talents, gifts and time. There is NO December Women’s Club Meeting. Our Advent Social will be on Saturday December 9th. If you have not received the email invitation, please contact Nelson Little, [email protected].

BAPTISM Any parishioner wishing to have a child baptized, please call the office to arrange for a class. This may be done prior to the child’s birth.

MARRIAGE We are unable to accommodate all of the requests for weddings at Stella Maris. To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date.

SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation.
