The other way in which we are going to experience Lent together is through worship on Sunday mornings with some new voices, sharing with us how they see God at work in Pittsburgh and around the world.

March 1 we will begin Lent and I will be preaching on Matthew 4— “Finding God In Our Ordinary Journey.”

March 8— we will enjoy hearing from Rev. Laura Bentley Nusser, who is the organizing pastor of Sanctuary (a new faith community in Lawrenceville) and the Mission Development/Coordinator at Oakmont Presbyterian Church.

March 15— we will be welcoming Rev. Brian Wallace, the associate minister for Pittsburgh Presbytery. March 22— on the fourth Sunday in Lent I will be preaching on John 9— “In the Recovery Phase” March 29— Ginny Cochenour and I will be finishing our retreat with the confirmation class at Camp

Crestfield. Ralph Lowe has been invited to preach. Ralph is the new director of Justice Ministries for Pittsburgh Presbytery.

Looking forward to see you and reflecting with you,

Cross Roads Connections 2 March, 2020 Pastor Sarah

A Prayer for the Beginning of Lent, by Kimberly Knowle-ZellerO Lord, here we are again.

The season of Lent. That time of the year to dig deeper

To reach widerTo love stronger.

The season of LentThat time to embrace deathTo walk towards the cross

To humble ourselvesTo pray, fast, and give our lives in service.

The season of LentA time to give up or to take on

A time to contemplate life and deathA time to face the realities of our broken world

A time to dance with the darkness.

The season of Lent.

In these days be with us.Walk with us.

Inspire us.Call us.

Motivate us.

In these days be with us.To serve our neighbors. To sing in community.

To wrestle with your Word.To sit in the silence.

O Lord, here we are again.I pray for your kingdom to come

For peace to rule the dayFor wholeness to emerge

I seek this peace for the world and pray I’ll find it in me.I know the days will seem long and the nights even longer.

But you persisted for 40 days in the wildernessAnd so, too, will I persist.

As you relentlessly love, may I relentlessly seek you.

For this season of Lent and forever more. Come, Lord Jesus.

I am here.Waiting.Hoping.Loving.

Seeking you.

One Great Hour of Sharing To Be Received

Around the world, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. Received during the season of Lent, One Great Hour of Sharing is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world — sharing God’s love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief from natural and human-caused disasters, food for the hungry, and support for the poor and oppressed. When you give, using the offering envelopes in the pew racks, your donations will go to help agencies like these:

PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE (32%)Restore Streets to Live in: Works alongside communities as they recover and find hope after the devastation of natural or human-caused disasters and support for refugees.

PRESBYTERIAN HUNGER PROGRAM (36%)Share your Bread with the Hungry: Takes action to alleviate hunger, care for creation, and address the systemic causes of poverty so all may be fed.

SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF PEOPLE (32%)Loose the Bonds of Injustice: Partners with communities responding to their experiences of oppression, poverty and injustice and educates Presbyterians about the impact of these issues.

Deacons’ Sunday and BrunchJoin us on Sunday, March 22 as the Deacons assist in worship leadership and host the annual Deacons

Brunch following worship. According to The Book of Order, “The office of Deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.”

The deacons serve our community in many ways, including visiting our ill or shut in members every week with flowers from the Sanctuary and a bulletin from worship. They send greeting cards and care packages, they serve meals to the homeless and organize our Project Linus collection drives. A deacon will greet you every Sunday when you come to church and get to know who you are. They organize our Christmas Gift of the Fourth Wise Man program for our Food Pantry clients, and host a special brunch every March. Join us as we celebrate the ministry of deacons among us!

Vacation Bible School 2020Sitting here looking out my window I keep daydreaming about summer.  I'm

excited about the VBS coming and how much GOD is preparing us for it.  That being said, we are going to need many hands to make light work.  Have you thought about how you can help at VBS this summer?  We need you!  Sometime soon you will see in the pews a ticket, please take that ticket and prayerfully consider helping at VBS. There are many ways you can help: being a crew leader; helping in the kitchen; cutting out

supplies at home; decorating; helping create the set; donating supplies and/or funds; and helping with the 4th of July float.   If God is calling you to volunteer in any way please fill out that ticket and return it to the ticket box outside Pastor Lori's office.

Thank you, Betsy Hughes

Cross Roads Connections 13 March, 2020 Where do Cross Roads Mission dollars go?

Cross Roads supports Presbytery approved nonprofit organizations. This month we’d like to spotlight one of those nonprofits – East End Cooperative Ministry.

Since 1970, East End Cooperative Ministry has been building a community of opportunity in Pittsburgh. They are dedicated to helping vulnerable adults and at-risk children and youth throughout our Pittsburgh neighborhoods. An interfaith ministry, EECM seeks to make a

difference in the lives of the individuals and families it serves by tending to their needs for today as well as their hopes for tomorrow. EECM reaches

out to the hundreds of people living in Pittsburgh's communities who don't know where their next meal is coming from. They support programs that include housing services, behavioral health support, as

well as education and employment assistance. For more information on this and other

Mission partners, please visit the bulletin board in the hallway across from staff offices.

With Sincere Appreciation….The Board of Deacons and The Cross Roads Preschool would like to say thanks to you, our

congregation for your faithful support of our Italian Buffet.   We would also like to say thanks to all the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a success.

The staff would like to offer a special “thank you” to: The anonymous donors of the new chairs in Fellowship Hall. Those who have contributed generously to our security fund. The Personnel Team and Trustees who have donated time and resources for a new coffee station for the

staff, including the donation of a microwave and mini fridge. Kim Shafer for the donation of office chairs for the preschool and church office. The Technology Team, including Dave Falvo, Courtney Caprara, Jen Junker and Josh Phillips for

livestreaming our worship services each Sunday. The donor of the new large screen TV for the youth room for their video curriculum. The Finance team for their hard work in preparing the 2020 budget. Caroline Zappa for thoroughly cleaning and organizing the Youth Ministries office.

All Day Hymn-SingThe Pittsburgh Regional Sacred Harp singers will once again host an all-day event at Cross Roads on

Saturday, March 21, from 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. in our Fellowship Hall. There will be a pot-luck lunch mid-day. This event is free and open to everyone – give what you can to help support the group. Sing and experience early American shape-note (fasola) music. Stay for all or part of the day. They will have books for you to use.

Sacred Harp singing is a uniquely American tradition that brings communities together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. Beginners and newcomers are welcome. For more information contact Penny Anderson at [email protected], 412-371-5898.

Paddling Through Lent … And LifeLent is a time for restoring balance to our lives. The Eskimos practice balance as they

venture into freezing Arctic waters in little boats. If you’ve ever paddled a kayak, you know how easy they are to tip. Thankfully, kayaks are just as easy to turn back upright.

That isn’t a bad image for Lent — or for life as a whole. Whatever spiritual disciplines we adopt, if we succumb to temptation, it’s no biggie. One of the lessons of Lent is that, as long as we’re traveling light, it takes only a quick twist of the paddle to right us. That paddle twist might
