either have to introduce it or embed it. NO “essay crashers”

Embedded Quote

• Begin with your own words, then embed a quote into the sentence and finish with your words.

• Steinbeck revealed “a dread of west and love of east” in many of his works (1).• Charles is not allowed to go into the army because it “would let

loose things which in Charles must be chained down” such as the ability to take a man’s life when angered, like his own brother’s (Steinbeck 27).

Need to change a word? Erase it, add brackets, and use the word you want!

Most impressive and demonstrates a sophisticated strategy

Embed the quotes• “The drive between Tehran and Caspian Sea is one of the most beautiful stretches of land I have ever seen” (Dumas 53).

• “Everywhere I went, I saw the same carved coconuts, the same seashell frames, and the same hats, all made in the Philippines. I tried to hang loose, but Waikiki felt more like 7-Eleven-by-the-Sea” (Dumas 54).

Wait… What if I just need part of the quotation?“He wanted to turn around, run back the way he came, and possibly jump off of the cliff, but he knew he could not let fear drive him.”

• If you just want to use the beginning of the quote• Joey was so scared that “he wanted to turn around, run back the way

he came, and possibly jump off of the cliff…” but he decided to face his fear (Cordell 2).

• If you just want to use the end of the quote • “he knew he could not let fear drive him” (Cordell 2).

• If you just want to use parts from the beginning and end• “He wanted to turn around… but he knew he could not let fear drive

him” (Cordell 2).

Incorporating a quote• Less impressive but sometimes needed

• Realizing how hurt Piggy is, Ralph can’t decide “between the two courses of apology or further insult” (Golding 23).

• Smokers continually “infringe on the rights of others when they light up in confined places such as elevators and restrooms” (Thompson 22).
