A Few Messages from David Ault 

CHANGE OF VENUE: This month’s Trial’s location has been changed to Mick Beckett’s “Rivendell” property off the Bungendore – Hoskinstown Road. (This is the same location that we used in May).  Start time of 10am remains the same –. Observers and assistants are always welcome! Please ensure that you are there in plenty of time for scrutineering and the rider’s briefing so that we can get the trial underway promptly at 10!  …………………………………. Thanks to those who have recently attended one or more of the MNSW Officials ‐ Race Secretary, Scrutineering & General Refresher seminars‐. The Club – and its riders, are most grateful for your ongoing support and commitment to the sport. We look forward to you plying your new accreditation and skills at future events. ................................... We shall soon be holding our AGM (date to be confirmed). It is the result of a small group of committed officials, riders and partners that we are able to offer a variety of venues and training sessions to our 80+ club riding members through the year. Please consider helping our club sustain its dynamics and help to provide events that all enjoy. All members are welcome to attend our AGM and commit to contribute in some role to the club’s functioning.  ……………………………………….. We are also keen to source new venues for our club’s events. If you know of a new property we might be able to add to our list, please let me know. .......................................... The Aussie Titles (and supporting events) are in Queensland in a couple of week’s time. I have no doubt that many of the grades will contain riders from the Trials Club of Canberra. Hope all goes well and you bring back some trophies!!! .............................................

On the last Sunday of this month – 29 August, sees another of the Australian 4X4 Masters series at Eastern Creek raceway. 

(This is also the weekend after the Aussie Titles...). Through the co‐ordination of Tony Coomer, Trials riders have been invited to participate at this event and showcase our skills over the same courses as the extreme 4WD’s. More info and pictures about the 4X4 Masters can be accessed at: www.4x4masters.com.au 

This day can be treated as a general fun and practice day and can be made as easy or difficult as you wish. Riding in front of a crowd who are passionate about motorsport! A previous round that we supported was enjoyed by all, with much skill sharing and general “showing off” around the various man‐made courses for extreme four‐wheel‐driving. There are several sections laid out over a compact area which provide a variety of terrain and obstacles.  

It is hoped that with our involvement and participation at these events, that we might ‐ in the future, be able to host a stand alone trial at this location. Without continuing to support and ride at these events, it is unlikely that we can continue our association with these people and use this location.  

At the moment, we still need some more names to make this event viable...

Round 2 TCC Pointscore Report 

Hey Everyone, 

 Just thought I would write a quick bit about the last club day at Rivendell. 

Firstly thanks to those who gave up their Saturday to set some amazing sections. 

Sunday morning came and it was wet and miserable, woo hoo. We made the journey out to Mick 

Beckett’s place to be greeted with even more rain. 

There were 7 sections set within a short distance of the car park. Despite the weather we had a good 

turnout of riders from all over the place. 

Section 1 was set in the rocky creek with a slippery bank at the end for all grades. There were some very 

entertaining dabs from most grades on it. 

Section 2 had a couple of nice easy banks (on the first lap anyway) to ride up and down. 

Section 3 was off limits to clubperson riders as access really sucked up the slippery gully. Mick Beckett 

was observing on this section and was entertained throughout the day with A and B grade dropping a 

number of points on the wet banks that bordered the section. 

Section 4 was an awesome log section (thanks to Mick Rummery and his chainsaw). C grade and 

clubpeople had a few smallish logs to negotiate, which were really awkward distances apart and fun to 

watch. A and B crossed the logs backwards and forwards several times and I'm sure observer Dave 

Bingley was entertained all day with a number of riders almost going over the bars. 

Sections 5 and 6 were back in the rocky part of the creek and were fairly easy to get through, provided 

your throttle control was steady. 

The final section of the day was a series of very slippery, muddy banks that saw many 5's taken by 

choice and also some quite spectacular offs (if you want to see some great photos you better become 

friends with Jimmy Mc on Facebook). Toby Coleman was observing on this one and spent most of the 

day with a smile on his face. 

The decision to run only 4 laps turned out to be a wise one as the creek was slowly rising during the day. 

This was one of the most fun trials I have ridden in ages even though it took hours to get the bike and 

gear clean afterwards. 

The only downside of this event was that the same people who gave up their Saturday to set sections 

got stuck packing up (as usual). Please come to club trials and enjoy the day, but if you didn’t have the 

opportunity to be involved in section setting please hang round for 15 ‐ 20 minutes afterwards and pack 

up a section or two.

2010 Sherco Women’s Cup Report For the 2nd year in a row the Women’s Cup was held at the Beckett’s Captain’s Flat property & again proved to be the idea location with a great variety of sections skilfully crafted by the TCC trusty section setting crew.     The day before, the paddock was buzzing with arrival of interstate trials  families & locals, setting/clearing sections, showing off balancing tricks, having a ride & generally just socialising.    The morning of the trial was as cold, as forecast (the Reed kids were happy to have taken up Toby & Michelle’s offer of a cosy house & left the poor grandparents to fend for themselves), but the sun was shinning & the warmth & excitement in the pits was heartening for the start of the 9th Annual Women’s Cup. The obligatory Cup photos were taken, with of course, some riders missing because of their eagerness to get riding. The numbers were down on previous years, because of an unfortunate clashing of dates with the Victorian State Round, but the quality & commitment of the 13 Women & girls riding made up for the lack of numbers. The effort made, especially by the Queensland & Victorian riders to attend, is greatly appreciated & acknowledged. Thanks also, to the effort, of all the parents & grandparents, who support their girls in their chosen sports & transported them to the Women’s Cup.     Sherco/Trialzone Section One was placed on the side of a steep hill. Starting off traversing the section north it was a tight turn south, or up & over logs (depending on your grade), & up & down the steep hill side again a number of times according to your grade. The early leaf litter made it interesting but by 2nd lap clear lines were evident. Young Shelby Lonie (who is a dead ringer for her big sister Brooke, a few years ago) rode her line very competently. She has definitely been practising her tight turns, well done Shelby! Aisla Anderson had a magic ride on this section outshining those that went before her. She is definitely on the way up & is justifying her selection in the Trials des Nations Team.    Monza Imports Section Two was next to section one on the steep hill side, this time there were more rocky outcrops to contend with. The C line changed many times during the day with the movement of a group of logs poised at different angles on the hill side. A tight off camber turn out for the Club riders was a challenge & my young Brooke made her day (& mine) by managing to clear it on her last attempt.    TJ’s MotorcycleTyres & Accessories Section Three was again on the same hillside this time with even bigger rocks for everyone to negotiate, but the stable ground actually made this a very rideable section & everyone seemed to enjoy riding it.       Kaos Trials Team Section Four was the start of the mud sections, which thankfully have been starting to be a more regular feature of recent trials. Those who had fitted new tyres were happy they did. It was a slippery sliding ride over the creek & up & down the steep dirt banks of another hill side. The muddy sections made for some good spectating, especially of the higher grades.     The Hell Team Section Five was again muddy but up & down a steep gully with not much traction & a short run up. Even getting into the section was a quagmire & needed to be attacked at speed to not be sucked into it. It was fun!!    KD Moto‐Trials Section Six was up a steep, muddy, rocky creek bed, again weaving up & down the steep, rocky side while local crowd had a great vantage point standing on other side of the dirt bank & watching, cheering & being in awe of the top riders in action. Not to mention appreciating the antics of the mere mortals. Sue Ferris was riding the Club line very smoothly, looking very confident.    Canberra Motorcyle Centre Fyshwick Section Seven was in the same creek just 2 metres from the last exit, causing a bit of a bottleneck & bikes were often strewn wherever a spare muddy cm could be found, while the riders walked the section. Again muddy/rocky low lines for the lower grades & exciting/challenging rides up the side of the crevice for the more gifted,  encouraged to the delighted spectators, young & old.    Canberra Motorcyle Centre Mitchell Section Eight was a bit of a ride away, through the creek up & over a cleared paddock hill, dropping over the other side into a wooded patch with the section perched on yet another steep incline. The section was hill climbs of various lengths, according to grade, negotiating trees, rocks, logs & much 

bush litter to then return to the base with tight, steep, turns only to blast back up the hillside again before dropping back down to the exit posts. A few breath holding moments were seen here.    Montesa Section Nine was a little further out towards the road, again blasting over the paddocks through gates to a mellow gully with big fallen trees to ride over again & again, & slippery mud banks to keep it interesting.    Joe’s Motorcycles Section Ten was only a few metres up the gully to tackle some more, huge, fallen trees & more slippery banks. Causing some riders grief early in the trial but like many of the sections one was usual able to master it later in the day. Four laps in all meant a comfortable pace for most riders.     Then it was time for the presentation always anticipated with great excitement. It was the formal recognition of the Women’s Cup with not only lovely silver cups, donated by Sherco to recognise their achievements but a huge bootie of awesome giveaways from the extreme generosity of all the section sponsors. It is the icing on the cake for a wonderful day. The girls went away with an array of oils/lubs/clothing/accessories/tyres/etc. All these supporting businesses, every year, do not think twice about sponsoring the event. Our wholehearted gratitude goes out to you one & all!!    Now to our results:   Expert Woman’s Champion is balancing queen, Kristie McKinnon, for the second year running. Runner Up goes to past champ Michelle Coleman, only 3 points in arrear with the fast improving Ailsa Anderson taking 3rd place & 4th place taken out by the capable Brooke Lonie .   Sports Woman’s Champion is the irrepressible Adina Reed, (she almost stampeded to take the TJ rear tyre prize & well deserved as she rode with a seriously worn out one). Runner Up went to lovely Victorian, Ina Halls.  Master Women’s Champion is proudly, myself with the loyal Sue Ferris as Runner Up.  Novice Women’s Champion is Julie Collins, it is a shame we loose Julie to MX for most of the year but great to see her come back to the annual Women’s Cup & ride so well. Runner Up was the stoic Estelle Boorer who manages to balance riding, with minding for Jonty, keeping an eye on  Kaitlin in the van & being the face of Koas Trials Team. Our newest rider, Kayla Silin, took 3rd .  Junior Women’s Champion is my proud Brooke Tranter, also most improved going from a lap of 16 down to 1 on the last lap.  Sub‐Junior Women’s Champion is the very capable & determined Shelby Lonie, Matt must be very proud of his girls.    Special thanks, to the Trials Club of Canberra for again hosting the Women’s Cup.The tireless work of the all the volunteers in just amazing.     Also, thanks to our gorgeous trophy boy, Jacko Murray.    I would like to wish all the entrants in the Aussie Titles the best of luck. I was hoping to attend but I have more pressing issues at home this year. So, do good & enjoy!    Next year, we plan to celebrate the Women’s Cup 10th Year Anniversary. Don Murray & I are already throwing a few ideas around to make it a very special event. So, we will keep you posted & hoping all the women & girls will be able to come & help celebrate 10 years of recognising our participation in the sport of Mototrials.    Bev Anderson‐Tranter                 

   

A Nimmitabel Perspective…. Of the Women’s Cup! 

An enjoyable sojourn was had by all who attended the 2010 Sherco Women’s Cup at Captains 

Flat. The event was held at the Beckett’s postcard‐ perfect farm under clear skies with a low ambient 

temperature for most of the proceedings. It amazes me that this venue seems to remain the best kept 

secret in Australian trials. Do you think we should consider sending out some end‐of‐ the‐day photos of 

the rider’s smiles with the entries in future?     

Our numerous section setters, including Mick Rummery and John Porombka were able to take 

full advantage of the available terrain, by giving almost every one of the 10 sections a completely 

different flavour. Oh how spoilt the Trials Club of Canberra is! We are blessed to have such a long list of 

keen supporters, who regularly offer up their properties for a day’s use by the trials community?  

The annual hallmark event for the ladies attracted 59 entries, including 13 women and girls from 

the ACT, NSW, Queensland and Victoria, spread across various classes. Following David Wynn’s machine 

examination and Peter Mowatt’s Clerk of Course delivery, riders headed off to closely scrutinise the still 

icy mud and rock sections in and around the babbling brook. The first section was a hill climb up the 

loose loamy soil and the experts and “A” lines could only have been attempted by mere mortals on all 

fours. Sections 2 and 3 were variations on a theme, with lines set over large boulders, cunningly crafted 

to suit the grade. 

Section 4 remained pretty tricky all day as the hard frost thawed to a slippery wet surface, 

where downhill braking was nearly impossible. Thank heavens for 4 stroke engine braking. The creek‐

crossing entry into Section 5 eventually ensured everyone’s back tyre was chock‐a‐block with mud 

before rolling between the start gates, then charging up the vertical dirt bank at appropriately graded 

angles. The drop back in was enough to get this old bloke’s heart pulsing as well. 

Sections 6 and 7 both brought the creek into play, with a bit of a splash before an uphill climb 

over mossy rock ledges and back down into the creek at the finish. 

A long ride over to the other side of the hill to Section 8 presented the entrants with a totally 

different set of challenges. This section was reminiscent of the Glenmaggie hill climbs with a testing exit 

over a devilishly placed log which seemed to mysteriously wander to a new location each lap! Section 9 

and 10 were situated up near the main road with ups and downs within an eroded gully and a couple of 

big fallen logs thrown in for good measure.     

Your scribe’s pre‐trial determination not to raise the bar too high for the blue line riders, with an 

intimidating opening clean lap, was achieved with characteristic flair (and bruising). The loss of 28 

points, by the ninth section, seemed to say ‐ mission accomplished!  Enough of my woes, this day’s all 

about celebrating the skills of Australia’s premier trials riding women and girls. The Expert Women rode  

the yellow line and a brilliant daylong tussle between top guns Kristie McKinnon and Michelle Coleman 

saw Kristie just edge out Michelle by hanging on to an opening lap advantage, with a constantly 

improving Ailsa Anderson and Brooke Lonie both putting in sensational last laps ‐ right in the ballpark 

with the top two.  

 In the C grade line the competition was just as fierce and although in different categories Adina 

Reed and Bev Anderson‐Tranter finished on the same low scores, with young Victorian, Ina Halls, 

displaying her effortless riding style not far behind. In Clubman, it was all Julie Collins. Her unblemished 

ride was challenged only by an unlucky Estelle Boorer, who improves with every outing and will soon be 

standing on the top of the dais. Master Women’s class rider, Sue Ferris, wasn’t too far behind and 

newcomer, Kayla Silin, rounding out the Ladies. Our very own Brooke Tranter is the new Junior 

Women’s champ and Sub‐Junior Champ is Shelby Lonie. It was not lost on most present that Shelby is 

starting to follow in big sister’s footsteps. Lovely girls ‐ proud dad!  

The Expert lad’s soared to dizzy heights and Mick Byrne just had Jake Walker and Luke Anderson 

covered to record the win. It was a “cliff hanger” in A grade, with Jason Byrne winning on a count back 

from Sam Rummery. Glen Crafter again blitzed the B Graders on the “no fuss” 4 stroke Beta (no, it 

wasn’t a Honda after all) and Barry Anderson came out of retirement to show the “young guys” John 

Waterworth and Gary Boniface how it was done. Joe Henderson rode the fabulous Fantic into first in 

Post Classic, ahead of yours truly (yes, thank you, I have put that first lap promise of an early retirement 

from trials on hold) and David Wynn. 

Result‐wise, you could have thrown a blanket over the entire field of blokes in Clubman class, 

with wily trials sage, Keith Marchant, Tony Millwood and Joe Tarabini squeezing each other out, to finish 

1‐2‐3. The Reed family figured pretty well through the results with Jim Reed winning C grade and Zac 

second in the juniors to third generation star, Jarad Boniface, who aced the Clubman line.  

The 2010 Sherco Women’s Cup will go down in history as another well run event promoted by 

TCC and its success is due, in no small part, to the devoted efforts of our cherished living legend, the 

Women’s Cup organiser, Bev Anderson‐Tranter and also Michelle Coleman, who both, year in and year 

out, continue to deliver the best outcomes for the Women’s Cup and the promotion of women in trials, 

generally.  Well done and thanks to our committed observers Pam Brown, Alistair Farquhar, Bob Tindall, 

Annette Shipley, David Waller, Don Murray, Brian and Tu Manns, John Porombka, Dale Spencer, David 

Bingley, James Johnson, Mick Beckett, Rob Black, Andrew Walker, Dennis Walker and Katelyn Boorer.  

  Finally, thanks to Steward Trevor Bennett, Peter Mowatt, Race Secretary Wendy Bennett, and 

Scrutineer David Wynn for their key official duties on the day. Last, but not least, thanks Giselle Kermeen 

and Wendy Bennett (again) for playing the numbers game in the caravan.
