Grant Kickstarts Robotics TeamLast year, a Pleasant Hill Education Foundation grant helped start the FTC Robotics team, Gromit’s Grommets. With a generous grant from the State Legislature via the Oregon Department of Education, along with other sponsorships, the team was able to purchase materials and register to compete. Eight students in grades 7 through 11 embarked on the task of designing, building, programming, and strategizing to compete in tournaments.

The team won highest honors at one qualifying tournament and was on the winning alliance at a second competition. At the State Championships in March, 50 of Oregon and Washington’s best teams met in Portland. The team fared well in pool play and marched through the elimination brackets in Cinderella fashion to become captains of the Oregon winning alliance—the first ever non-Portland team to win! At that point, the students really went to work, soliciting donations from local businesses and community members to fund their trip to the Super-Regional tournament in Sacramento, and in two short weeks, the students raised over $4,500! In Sacramento, Gromit’s Grommets competed against 71 teams from 17 states. They built some great friendships, learned a lot, and placed 12th overall.

Congratulations to Gromit’s Grommets! Thank you for representing Pleasant Hill in an admirable way. We wish you the best of luck in this upcoming season.

Our MissionThe Pleasant Hill Education Foundation, in partnership with our community and alumni, provides funds to inspire learning, enhance teaching, and create opportunities for every student.

Our Mission in PicturesExamples of how the PHEF lives up to its mission include: (top left) hands-on science equipment to inspire learning by providing science investigation labs for sixth graders; (bottom left) new opportunities like a start-up grant to provide funds for student leaders to learn peer-to-peer mediation; (top right) enhancing teaching by placing iPads in classrooms, engaging students and supporting the learning process.
