THE PENNY DREADFULS!

The Penny Dreadfuls are back at the Pleasance for an amazing fourth year.Rapidly becoming cult favourites, the Pleasance is immensely pleased to have them back on board after the astounding success of their Aeneas Faversham trilogy.David, Thom and Hum-phreyʼs new show ʻThe Never Manʼ takes place on a remote themepark island. A confused man wakes up with no memory of how he got there. “Itʼs not a play in the traditional sense, we are basically a sketch show that has a story going through it. Weʼve dressed up a sketch show.”The boys took the show to the Brighton Fringe this

year where it was nomi-nated for Best Comedy Show at Brighton Fringe Awards. However, their string of sold out shows and rave reviews isnʼt impressing everyone.“When our friends come and watch the show they ask us ʻwhy did that hap-pen? Why didnʼt he just do this?ʼ Itʼs ridden with wholes if weʼre honest. Itʼs a fan boyʼs wet dream, going on blogs saying ʻdid you notice this? This bit didnʼt make sense. I think I saw a ghost in the third scene.ʼ”Factually fl awless or not, the box offi ce cannot print tickets quickly enough for this play. The Penny Dreadfulʼs star is most defi nitely on the rise, and

those in the know are clamouring to be associ-ated with the trio. They have already had to add three extra dates, and with their personal recom-mendation: “If you have liked anything else ever, youʼll love this show,” itʼs hardly surprising. If you canʼt get tickets to the show, be sure not to miss the Penny Dreadfulʼs in this yearʼs Sketchatron, details to follow. The Penny Dreadfuls sold out their full runs in 2007 and 2008 with their Ae-neas Faversham shows, so book quickly!Pleasance CourtyardPleasance Two20.30 (21.25)5 - 31 August£8.50 - £11.50

TOM DEACON! FIRST CLASS AND ODYSSEY!

First Class and Odyssey are the latest shows from sister companies Half Wit Theatre and Ad Infi nitum, back after the success of last yearʼs Behind the Mir-ror. First Class is the story of a weary postal worker who is taken on a magical adven-ture by a colleague. Seeing the World through her eyes reawakens his zest for life and passion.Odyssey tells the tale of one manʼs incredible jour-

ney within the confi nes of the classic Greek myth, It is a moving, imaginative and original retelling of a timeless story.Unfortunately for the compa-ny members they are lead-ers in a fi eld of theatre that they feel is not receiving the recognition it deserves. For performers who are leading an industry that is going from strength to strength, having their shows listed as dance and not as physical theatre is immensely frustrating.“They are very different genres. For us our movement conveys a message and is a medium for story telling.”Although they have been de-lighted to have wonderful re-views in national publications, to have reviewers of this calibre still not recognising their fi eld as an entity in itʼs own right leaves them with a sense of injustice. How-ever, fortunately for physical theatre, the art could not have three more competent, passionate and engaging

performers fi ghting itʼs corner than Lecoq-trained Amy, Nir, and George. There are few words that better describe these produc-tions than thoroughly impres-sive. They really do have to be seen to be believed. They aim to challenge your percep-tions of reality. This is exactly what they do with their magi-cal and physically astounding performances. You will be hard pushed to fi nd perform-ers who are more passionate about their art or the experi-ence of their audience. Both

are a must see for anyone who enjoys a brilliant story, told in an unforgettable way. First ClassPleasance CourtyardAttic14.30 (15.20)5-31 August (not 17,24)£6.50 - £9.00OdysseyPleasance Dome10Dome16.20 (17.20)£6.50 - £9.00

Itʼs hard to be-lieve that this ʻIndeci-sive ̓is Tom Deaconʼs fi rst solo show. His quiet confi dence and innate ability to make people laugh would make you think he had been a stand up for decades. Little wonder then that he was Chortleʼs Student comedian of the year 2007, or that he starred in the Comedy Zone last year. He is already a TV regular, presenting BBC Switch and appear-ing in Paramount Com-edyʼs Edinburgh and Beyond. The show is an insight into Tomʼs life. “I wanted to say something about myself and be a

bit more open. Itʼs about the problems I eternally put on myself by being indecisive. How I want to be a better man, but constantly seem to fail.” The show is incredibly accessible for all. “One night I had two young girls in the audi-ence. They were warned there might be a couple of swear words but they stayed and chuckled away. Iʼm not a blue comic. Another night I had a very old couple in, and they were probably the two that laughed the most.” Tom is very pleased to be at the Pleasance, and is par-ticularly loving the banter with the staff. “Tw*t in a hat! That is a good one.

I always love that. Iʼve had to start wearing a beanie so as they donʼt recognise me.” Other than his desire for the muffi ns to have a softer centre, Tom is happy to be here and we are delighted to have such a talented young comedian on our programme. You are likely to see more and more of him over the next few years, so make sure you can say you got in there early and saw his fi rst ever solo show.Pleasance CourtyardCellar20.30 (21.30)5-31 August£7.00 - £9.50
