Channel 4 fa- vourites Pappyʼ s Fun Club are back for their fourth run at the festi- val. They told us more about this year show ʻPappyʼ s Fun Club World Record Attempt: 200 Sketches in an Hourʼ. “Back in February we thought it would be a good idea to attempt 200 sketches in an hour, and now we are getting our comeuppance. I think the key word re- ally has to be attempt” explains Matthew. Billed between comedy legend Rhod Gilbert and TVʼs 4 Poofs and a Piano, the Pap- pyʼs Boys are on the verge of comedy great- ness. However, for every high there is a low. The demise of Woolworths was a sad event for all of us, but it would appear no one was hit harder than sketch group Pappyʼs Fun Club. “So many peo- ple used to think what is that shop actually for? Woolworths was basically designed for us. We used to buy the majority of our props from there, and weʼd organise them into the little sports bags they used to sell. It was a big thing for us when it went bust.” Itʼs not all bad news. The shows are selling extremely well and the group are obvi- ously happy with the re- actions they are getting. “We were lucky enough to have a lot of people at our rst per- formance. They were in a great mood and really ready to start their festi- val.” “We have had such lovely runs that Edinburgh feels like a home from home for us really.” Despite being The Scotsmanʼs ʻfunni- est sketch troupe on the Fringeʼ the group have learnt to be philosophi- cal about the press. “Press is inciden- tal. If you get a great review it makes you feel good for a couple of minutes. If you get a bad review it makes you feel bad for a couple of days. But if someone walks up to you in the street and tells you they really enjoyed the show it means a lot more.” Youʼd be hard pushed to nd a Pap- pyʼs audience member who hadnʼt thoroughly enjoyed their experi- ence. JUMPING MOUSE

This is the Kid-zoneʼs fi rst year at the Pleasance and it is off to a fl ying start. In large part itʼs success has been down to the fantastic kids shows we have on – like Jumping Mouse. Jumping Mouse is the third show that Unpacked Theatre has brought to the Fringe. Aimed at anyone four and over, it includes a mix of humour perfect for the whole family. We were joined by Director Clare Dunn and Gilbert Taylor, who

are both performing in the show. Adapted from a Native Amercian folk story, Jumping Mouse is the story of a young boy who doesnʼt want to move house. One day on a bus he hears the magical story of the bullfrogs, a wolf, a bison and of course Jumping Mouse. “We took that myth and devised a way to tell it the way we wanted to, with puppets, music and songs” said director Clare Dunn. “It can be a chal-

lenge to keep a young audience engaged. Weʼve tried to keep our story-telling as vibrant as possible. The story is punctuated with songs, and we do a lot with the audience. We get the children to give us names for the characters and we teach them how to jump.” The Pleasanceʼs new venue for kids means that shows like Jumping Mouse are in far more demand at the Fringe. “With the teepee set up today I saw more

kids in the courtyard than I remember seeing in the whole of the fes-tival last year! It brings a whole new dynamic and just shows that the Fringe is for anyone to attend and enjoy.” This is a fantastic crossover show that par-ents and children alike will love.Pleasance CourtyardPleasance Two11.30 (12.30)5-31 August£5.00 - £7.50Watch out for a Kid-zone special edition of The Pleasance Times!
