At just 18, Darren Sloss has a CV that a comic twenty years his senior would envy.He has written for two seasons of Mock the Week, supplying material for mentor Frankie Boyle. He was also one of the youngest ever fi nalists in the national ʻSo You Think Your Funnyʼ competi-tion. Daniel is developing his own sitcom and has toured Ireland. In his debut Edinburgh show ʻTeenage Kicksʼ Daniel fi nds humour in the ups and downs of adoles-cence. “The audience would be weirded out if I came on stage and started making jokes about my mother in law.”Often attended by families with teens, Daniel is keen
to playfully stir up trouble in the audience.“Itʼs good when other teenagers come along with their parents. I can go ʻI think youʼll fi nd some of the stuff you do isnʼt exactly that perfect either.ʼ Itʼs good to see the par-ents get it for once.” Danielʼs talent helps him to quickly overcome any reservations an older audience member might have about such a young comic. He only has a year and a half left of being a teenager, but with cre-dentials like these he will always pull in the crowds.“I do talk about being a teenager at the moment because if I donʼt the audi-ence is put off. The older I get hopefully the funnier my material will be, and when I get to 33 or 34 I
can say Iʼve been doing this for half my life.” Daniel is determined to be back next year. “I was thrilled to get the Pleas-ance. Iʼve been coming here since I was 10! Itʼs a cracking venue. Me, my mum and my agent went for a sound check and all said we couldnʼt believe we hadnʼt been here before.”Daniel also featured on Scott Millʼs Radio One show yesterday, broad-cast live from the Court-yard.Daniel is in huge demand, so grab a ticket while you can!Pleasance Dome10Dome19.00 (19.50)5 – 31 August (not 16,24)£8.00 - £11.00

NORMALITY!DANIELLE WARD! Normality is, quite simply, a master piece. Quite a claim to make, but easily backed up when you consider that this play has been a phenom-enal success in South Africa for nine years. Highly respected theatre collaborators Pedro Kruger and Hen-nie Van Greunen have fi nally brought this mov-ing, powerful and spec-tacular play to the UK. Normality is the story of a disabled man whose quest for love sees him battling various body issues Hennie and Pedroʼs show has a powerful message that the whole arts industry should be aware of: A
play about a minority does not need to focus exclusively on their diffi culties, or the bad aspects. Normality is an unfortunately rare chance to see to see a disabled character given a meaty role which does not focus on the diffi cul-ties of the condition. “This is not a moral show or a lecture. Itʼs love story and it just happens to be that this guy is disabled.” Ex-plains Hennie. Pedro plays the main character in a com-passionate, competent and ultimately non-pat-ronising way. “Every person in the audience has im-age issues. We all have problems with our bodies
at some stage, even Michelle Pfeiffer. There is a common reference for everybody.” The play is a won-derful mix of story telling and musical theatre. Normality will challenge you to reas-sess your preconcep-tions, boost your self image and provide you
with one of the most entertaining hours you are likely to fi nd on the Fringe.Pleasance DomeAcedome16.40 (17.40)5-31 August (not 17, 24)£8.50 - £11.00
Danielle Ward is a refreshingly switched on, compe-tent and intelligent comic. She has previ-ously won the prestig-ious Time Outʼs new comic of the year. In her new show ʻLiesʼ Danielle talks about the diffi culties she has with being too honest. This has lead to numerous problems, including not being con-sidered for acting roles. “I am a really bad liar. Iʼm really bad at making lies up on the spot, that is the most ridiculous thing. I donʼt think it is a bad thing, being able to lie.”
Despite the wonderful success of her show ʻTake a Break Talesʼ last year, Danielle is fi nding the specifi c theme of her new show quite useful. “Last year it was just a selection of anecdotes, itʼs easier for an audience if they know that you are taking it somewhere.” Danielle is keen to stress that she does not do broad observa-tional comedy. “I donʼt want to be a lowest common denominator comic, Itʼs really easy to patronise your audience. Itʼs that BBC 3 thing of aiming so low that it doesnʼt really appeal to
anyone.” Appeal is not something that Dan-ielle needs to concern herself with currently. With fantastic reviews complimenting her dry wit and aptitude for clever comedy, she is a big hit at the Fringe this year. You can also see Danielle in ʻKaraoke Circusʼ at 1am Sunday night/Monday morning. More details to follow!Pleasance CourtyardHut21.45 (22.45)5 - 30 August (not 19)£7.00 - £9.50
