Playful DolphinsJane Landreth

Everybody loves dolphins. And why not? God created them to be playful, cute, and very

smart. Dolphins love to jump out of the water and ride the waves behind boats. They even seem to like teasing each other and other animals. If you were swimming in the water, a dolphin just might give you a quick nudge to say hi.

Dolphins are mammals that are re-lated to whales. They live in family groups called pods. Most dolphins live in pods that have between 5 and 12 dolphins. When food is plenti-ful, many pods come together and create a superpod of up to 1,000 dolphins.

Female dolphins are called cows, the males are called bulls, and the young dolphins are called calves.

Many dolphins are gray in color. Their backs are darker than the rest of their bodies. However, the largest dolphin is the orca. Orcas are black and white. Depending on the type of dolphin, they can have between 36 and 268 small teeth. But they do not chew their food; they swallow it whole. Dolphins have excellent eyesight and hearing. So watch what you say about them. You wouldn’t want to hurt their feelings!

Dolphins make clicking sounds that travel through the water and bounce back when they hit nearby objects. This helps dolphins find their food—fish and squid. They also talk by clicking,

whistling, and making other sounds. Wouldn’t it be fun to learn their language so you could talk to them?

God gave dolphins streamlined bodies, which can glide easily through water. Their fins stand up on their backs to keep them upright in the water.

Their fins and fluke (tail) help them steer their way through the water. They usually swim between five and seven miles per hour, but they can swim up to 20 miles per hour during bursts of speed.

Dolphins usu-ally swim close to the water’s surface. However, one dol-phin, Tuffy, was ob-served diving 990 feet below the surface. That’s deep!

Female dolphins have one calf at a time. They will not have another baby for two to four years. When Mom gets ready to have her calf,

she swims close to the surface of the water. When the calf is born, she quickly pushes the baby to the surface, so it can get its first breath of air. Dolphins are the only ocean mammals to give birth tail first. That is so the calves do not drown. God’s animals are amazing!

Dolphins are one of the most intelligent ani-mals on Earth. A dolphin’s brain is actually larger than a human’s brain. Perhaps someday, when you are older, you can help study and train dolphins. Wouldn’t that be fun?

Lesson 3 for June 2020Memory Verse: “Let us do good to all people” (Galatians 6:10, NIV).References: Matthew 14:13–21; John 6:1–13; The Desire of Ages, pp. 364–371.The Message: I will share with others.

Loaves and FishesJ esus is feeling tired. (Yawn and stretch.)

“No more stories for now,” Jesus says. (Help your child echo, “No more stories.”) Jesus needs a rest from telling stories. Jesus and His friends climb into a boat. (Go sit in a different chair.) Goodbye, Jesus. Take care! (Wave goodbye.)

Where is Jesus going? He is going to cross the lake.

See all the people. (Point to the people.) See all the boys and girls. (Point to the boys and girls.) They want to be with Jesus. They want to hear Jesus tell sto-ries. Hurry, Little Child. Bring your lunch. What is in Little Child’s lunch basket? (Count the loaves and fish.) Come, Little Child. Let’s go find Jesus.

Run, Little Child! (Pick up your child or take his or her hand.) Run after the people. Bring your lunch. (Grab a lunch box or basket.) Let’s find Jesus. Run around the lake. (Jog around a table.) Run to find Jesus!

See Little Child. He sits and listens to Jesus. Jesus tells a story. All day Jesus tells sto-ries. Little Child is hungry. (Rub your tummy each time you say “hungry.”) Jesus is hungry. Everyone is hungry.

Is that your lunch, Little Child? (Point to the lunch basket.)

The day is late. Everyone is hungry. (Rub your tummy.) “Send the people away,” Jesus’ friends say.

“No, the people are tired,” Jesus says. (Punctuate each word by pointing a finger.) “The people are hungry. You feed them.”

But Jesus’ friends have no food.“Here!” Little Child says. “Take my food to

Jesus.” (Have your child hold up the lunch bas-ket.) Very good, Little Child! (Hug your child.) Thank you for sharing your food.

Parents: Ensure that this Bible story becomes part of your child’s spiritual heritage by reinforcing it at home all week. The Baby Steps story and the “Do and Say” activities will help you.

Jesus is praying. (Fold your hands in prayer.) “Thank You, God, for this food. Thank You for Little Child who has shared.”

Do you share? Yes. (Nod vigorously.) You are learning to share.

See Jesus. Jesus breaks the bread. (Break a piece of bread.) Jesus shares the bread. (Share the bread.) Everyone is sharing the bread.

Yum, yum, yum! (Pretend to eat.) This bread is fresh.

Yum, yum, yum! This is good food. Thank You, Jesus. Thank You for the

story and for the food. Thank you, Little Child. Thank you for

sharing your lunch. The Bible says, “Let us do good to all

people” (Galatians 6:10, NIV).

Do and SayStudy these suggestions for something to do each day besides reading the lesson story. Select those that are appropriate for your child’s developmental stage, and repeat them often. The Baby Steps story complements the third suggestion.

• Review the memory verse. Sing the memory verse song if you can.

• Read the Bible story interactively with your child.• Read the Baby Steps story together, and then

invite a friend over to play. Practice sharing toys.

• Make fishy shadows on the wall. Share the light with someone else.

• Look at the different types of bread at the gro-cery store. Try one that’s new to you!

Juan likes to make new friends.

He likes to share his toys too.

He does it every day. When Juan goes to day

care,And sees new kids come

to stay,He gets out all his toysAnd shares them when

he plays.

This Baby Steps story can help teach your child to share with others.

Lesson 10 for June 6–12, 2020Memory Verse: “Burst into songs of joy together” (Isaiah 52:9, NIV).References: John 2:1–11; The Desire of Ages, pp. 144–153.The Message: Jesus wants us to have fun with our family and friends.

Jesus Goes to a WeddingDo you like parties? Do you like to eat yummy food and play games with your family and friends? Jesus liked to have fun too! He liked to visit with His family and His friends.

J esus and His friends were going to a party! No, it wasn’t a birthday party. It was a wed-

ding party. Where Jesus lived, when people got married, they had a party that lasted for many days! So they had lots of food to eat and juice to drink.

Some of Jesus’ family were at this wedding party. Mary, His mother, was there. She had helped plan the party. And some of Jesus’ spe-cial friends were there too.

Everyone was having fun, but the people who planned the party were worried. The ser-vants came to Mary and may have said, “All the juice is gone! What shall we do? The party will be ruined. The bride and groom will be so em-barrassed!”

What can I do? Jesus’ mother may have wondered. She turned and saw Jesus. Quietly, she went to Him and said, “The juice is all gone!”

Jesus looked around. He saw some big water jugs. He spoke quietly to the servants, “Go fill the big water jugs with water.”

They were puzzled. What good will that do? they wondered. But they did as Jesus said.

When all the jugs were full, Jesus said to the servants, “Take some to the person in charge of the party.”

The men poured some of the water into a cup—except it wasn’t water anymore! It was juice! Good, sweet grape juice! Now there would be enough juice for the party!

The servants took a nice cool glass of the juice to the man in charge of the party. He probably tasted it, then drank it all. “Mmm, this is such good juice!” he may have said to the bridegroom. “Most people serve the best juice at the beginning of the wedding feast. But you have saved the best until last!”

The servants were excited! Jesus’ mother and His friends were pleased. And the bride and groom were happy too.

Jesus’ friends began to talk among them-selves about the miracle juice. This was Jesus’ first miracle. And they had seen His amazing power. What would they see in the days ahead?

Jesus showed love to the bride and bride-groom, to His mother, and to His friends. The happy times you have with your friends and family are special to Jesus too. Jesus wants us to have fun with our family and friends.

Surprising TanishaRob Robinson

M irajah,” Mommy called after she hung up the phone. “I have good news from Auntie Gail.”

Mirajah came running quickly. Her auntie Gail, uncle David, and cousin Tanisha had to leave their house and live in a school for a few days be-cause floodwater came into their house.

“Auntie Gail says they can start cleaning the mud out of their house on Sunday,” Mommy explained. “But they can’t live in their house until everything dries and they can put in new carpet.”

“Hooray!” Mirajah shouted. “They get to go back home!”

“And I have a little plan too,” Mommy ex-plained. “I’m going to take a couple of vacation days so we can drive to Auntie Gail’s to help. We will take our camping tent and supplies. Then they can camp out in the backyard until their house is all cleaned up.”

“I like that idea!” Mirajah squealed with de-light. “Because I get to see Tanisha!”

That evening Mirajah helped Mommy pack all of their camping supplies into the car: a tent, two sleeping bags, some extra blankets, a lantern, camp chairs, and a camp stove. Early the next morn-ing, while it was still dark, Mommy and Mirajah climbed into the car and started driving toward Auntie Gail’s house. It took a long time to get there.

Finally, Mommy’s car stopped in front of Auntie Gail’s. Mommy beeped the car horn several times. Mirajah jumped out of the car.

“Tanisha! Tanisha!” she called. “Surprise! We’re here!”

Tanisha, Auntie Gail, and Uncle David came running! They were very surprised to see Mirajah and Mommy standing in the driveway.

“We’re here to help you!” Mirajah announced.

“I am so surprised!” Auntie Gail said.“We brought you all of our camping supplies to

use until you can get back in your house,” Mommy explained. “You can camp out in your backyard at night so you don’t have to sleep at the school any-more. And I’m here to help you any way I can.”

“That is so kind of you,” Auntie Gail said. That evening Uncle David set up the tent in the

backyard. Mommy set up the camp stove. Tanisha and Mirajah carried the sleeping bags and blankets into the tent.

After supper, everyone sat around the camp stove as Auntie Gail poured hot chocolate into mugs for dessert. Mirajah and Tanisha slurped on hot chocolate and listened to Auntie Gail and Uncle David tell stories about the flood.

Mirajah yawned and said, “Mommy, I’m glad we could come to Tanisha’s house. It’s fun to be here.”

And between yawns, Tanisha replied, “I’m glad you came too. This has been my most funnest day in a long time!”

“Why, yes,” Mr. Delgado replied. “That would be wonderful. My back is hurting today.”

“What should I pick?” Sadie asked.“Can you choose three ripe tomatoes?” Mr. Del-

gado asked.“Sure.” Sadie looked until she found three big red

tomatoes. Then she plucked them from the vine and put them into Mr. Delgado’s basket.

“Can you pull up three carrots?” Mr. Delgado asked, pointing to a row of green carrot tops sprouting from the soil.

“Sure,” Sadie said. She looked until she found three bushy green carrot tops. Then she pulled until the orange carrots slid out of the ground. She handed the carrots to Mr. Delgado.

“And last, some green beans,” Mr. Delgado said.Sadie snapped off beans until Mr. Delgado said

they had enough.“Thank you, Sadie,” Mr. Delgado said. “You really

helped me.”“You’re welcome,” Sadie said with a smile. Then

she ran back to see her mom. “Thank you for helping Mr. Delgado,” Mom said.“It was fun,” Sadie replied.Later, as Sadie colored at the kitchen table, Mom

said, “Guess what, Sadie? We’ve been invited to supper at Mr. Delgado’s house. He said he has a surprise for you.”

A surprise? Sadie wondered what it could be as she and Mom and Josie walked next door.

“Have a seat at the kitchen table,” Mr. Delgado said as he answered the door.

As Sadie sat down, Mr. Delgado set a bowl in front of her. Sadie saw tomatoes and carrots and green beans floating in the broth.

“You made vegetable soup!” Sadie exclaimed. “That’s my favorite!”

“These are the vegetables you picked for me today, Sadie,” Mr. Delgado said. “Since you helped me, I wanted to share them with you.”

Sadie smiled at Mr. Delgado who smiled back at her. It’s nice to help a neighbor, Sadie decided. And it’s nice when someone shares with you.

“I’m going to call this ‘nice soup,’ ” Sadie said. I’m glad we can all share this nice soup, Sadie thought. Well, all except for Josie, who’s still too little for soup, of course.

Sadie’s SurpriseHeather Klassen

One sunny afternoon Sadie, her mom, and Josie were outside in their backyard. While Sadie

played, she noticed Mr. Delgado working in his gar-den next door. As he bent over, he suddenly grabbed his back and frowned.

“Mom,” Sadie said. “I think Mr. Delgado’s back hurts.”

Mom looked up. “I think you’re right, Sadie,” Mom said. “I know he often has trouble with his back.”

He’s trying to pick his vegetables, Sadie thought, but his back hurts. Jesus would want me to help him.

“We should help him, Mom,” Sadie said.“You’re right, Sadie,” Mom agreed, but just then

Josie began to cry. “But I need to feed Josie right now.”“Can I go help him by myself ?” Sadie asked.Mom nodded. “Sure. I can see you from here.”Sadie jumped up and ran across the two yards.“Can I help you pick your vegetables, Mr. Delga-

do?” Sadie asked.
