PLAY-BY-PLAYFEBRUARY 2017
1 | MISSISSIPPI CHILDREN’S MUSEUM | FEBRUARY 2017 PLAY-BY-PLAY
This Spring, the Mississippi Children’s Museum (MCM) has taken its Planting the Seeds to Read Family Literacy program to children and families in Sunflower County, MS. This outreach effort is the first of its kind for MCM.
Patti Reiss, MCM Assistant Director of Programs, explains that through funding from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, MCM is able to bring this, and other programs, to Sunflower County while working with other organizations working in the area.
“We hope to raise literacy scores, we hope to raise their self esteem, and we hope to raise their love of education and going to school because they will achieve more and become better students across the board in not only literacy but all subjects,” Reiss says.
One of the unique parts of this program is its approach to teaching the whole family through informal and inquiry-based learning techniques, MCM Director of Education and Programs Jana Perry says of the program.
“Planting the Seeds to Read is one of the few programs that I’ve been a part of that really engages the entire family- brothers, sisters, cousins, as well as educating the parents or grandparents or extended family that might be raising the children,” Perry explains.
To host the program in Indianola, MCM has partnered with the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center (BBKM), allowing families to still experience a museum setting for the program and helping MCM to build relationships with participants. Verna Ransom, BBKM Ambassador Coordinator/Executive Assistant, says she is excited to see how the program works with children and families in Sunflower County.
“The children of Indianola, in my opinion, embrace learning, they embrace wanting to learn as much as they can, and as often as they can,” she says. “It’s because of programs like this that we give them that opportunity.”

OF MCM
Six-year-old Maddie Grace has spent her childhood thus far at the museum as part of her family’s membership. She sits next to her sister, Kate, and across from her grandmother, Susan Deaver.
“I love that there’s something for the girls to do at every level. We’ve been members ever since Maddie Grace was her age,” Deaver explains motioning to 2-year-old Kate across the table.
While in her favorite place in the museum, Outside the Lines, Maddie Grace strategically chooses the color blue and begins to draw a rainbow as she talks about her favorite books in the museum, all of the words that she knows in Spanish, Christmas holiday memories, and how she definitely wants to be the first girl astronaut to explore the Moon.
Deaver says that Maddie Grace’s imagination is more a-buzz with each visit to MCM and that the family museum membership is worth every ounce of acquired inspiration.

ALONZO FARMER
Mississippi’s rich heritage arises from the tenacity and hard work of a legion of unsung heroes from all corners of the state including MCM’s own big hero, Alonzo Farmer, a Cleveland, MS native. Farmer, who has been the museum’s Facility Manager for nearly three years, strives to leave a legacy that will inspire children to achieve their potential while continuously playing and learning at the museum.
“He is my ‘partner in crime’ at the museum,” Samantha King says about Farmer. Her role as the Assistant Director of Exhibits aligns with his position as he and his staff keep the museum ready for visitors. “We work closely to make sure all of the museums exhibits are functioning properly and are safe for guests to have a fun experience.”
Farmer is an essential member of the MCM family- his background in commercial and residential construction, hardware, plumbing, electrical work and engineering has equipped him to manage MCM’s operations and exhibit maintenance—all with a light-hearted spirit.
