Rising Above the Gathering Storm
Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future
Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century: An Agenda for American Science and Technology, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of
Engineering, Institute of Medicine
FINDINGS
Having reviewed trends in the United States and abroad, the committee is deeply concerned that the scientific and technological building blocks critical to our economic
leadership are eroding at a time when many other nations are gathering strength.
By 2010 … if current trends continue … more than 90% of the world’s scientists and engineers will be living in Asia.
Although US fourth graders score well against international competition, they fall near the bottom or dead last by 12th grade in Mathematics and Science, respectively.
56% of engineering PhDs in the US are awarded to foreign-born students.
Past 3 years alone, China & India have doubled production of 3- and 4-year degrees in engineering, computers science and IT, while the US production of engineers is stagnant and CS and IT have doubled.
The pipeline to the Green workforces begins at the elementary level.
• Teach sustainability literacy so it will no longer be considered optional
• Challenge and engage students with real-world environmental situations so they can be part of the solutions • Provides a platform and a context for learning that is a meaningful and relevant to their life
• Green education inspires students and impacts change in the community

Green Jobs Forecast

• Existing Jobs will require additional training of “green skills”
• A large number of green jobs will require a professional certificate or postsecondary education. (a highly qualified green workforce)
• With new technologies, innovations and inventions on the horizon, many green jobs do not exist yet and will need to be created to meet societal needs
• Corporate and labor unions retraining programs
• Increased global population, a decrease of available resources and climate change
The Road to Green Jobs
• Sustainability Literacy at the elementary school level
• The pipeline for green jobs begins at the middle school level with green career exploration
• Vocational and Technical Schools
• Imbedded within High School Core Curriculum Content Standard
• After school programs, senior capstone projects, service learning and internship programs
• College and University degree and Continuing Education Programs
• Grant funding to develop curriculum and training for teachers
