Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:

There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project.

Costs:

As I am doing my project at York College, cost won’t affect me personally as the college will provide

everything I need to use to make my children’s book.

Quantity:

I will make only one copy of this book as it is for My work and diploma in media. Hopefully the finished product

is so good that it could be published across the world but getting a good mark and a really good and detailed finished product is the main priority.

Audience and Target Market:

My book is aimed at children from the age of 3 up to the age of 6. It also has qualities that would appeal to

adults such as how the story is told in a different way to other versions of the gingerbread man.

Quality Factors:

To make sure the quality of my work is the best to my ability I need to think about how im going to handle my time. I want to make sure I have enough time for everything so there are no rushing parts of the project. To

influence the quality of my work I could ask my fellow students if I could have a look at theirs and how their work is going which will motivate me to try harder as I want mine to be the best I can give.

Codes of Practice:

the publishers association code of practice covers how publishers should interact with authors. It covers a variety of financial and legal issues which are not relevant.

Regulation:

I need to make sure that my book doesn’t fall under the definition of a toy otherwise it will have to go through a

series of checks for small parts, dangerous attributes and whether it is overall suitable to be used, if it were to be sold on the European market. But luckily, my book is a book and not a toy so none of the checks will be

needed.

Copyright:

As I am working with a story that I didn’t write, I need to think about copyright law. Although I did not write this

story I am allowed to use it to produce work with the writer’s permission and any credit or profit will have to be shared. But if my story is very old and out of copyright, therefore I could use it.

Ethical Issues:

My book must be completely free of discrimination, racism, sexism, cultural mocking or any other form of

indecency. I have thoroughly checked each page plan and flat plan and everything seems fine.

Resources:

A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which

you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.

If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Production Schedule:

Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will

also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

Each session is a half day of college.

Session 1: Gathering equipment

This session will consist of me gathering my equipment, all of my drafts and mindmaps will be here to remind me of my ideas.

Once my equipment is gathered and everything is ready, I will begin to make my children’s book.

In the first session I will create the first page, I will take the right amount of time so there is no rushing.

Session 2: continuing the first page, starting the second

This session will include me continuing on from the first page as in the previous session I had to gather all of my equipment aswell as starting the first page. Which I will draw and then scan.

Once I have finished the first page, I will begin on the second. The rest of this session will consist of creating the second page. I will create the second page by Illustrating my characters and using the scanner to put it into the computer so I can add them to my digitally rotoscoped background.

Session 3: The third page.

The characters will be illustrated using pencils and paper. I will then use the scanner to upload it on to

the Mac. Where I will add my illustrated drawings to my digitally rotoscoped background.

Session 4: The fourth page

The characters will be illustrated using pencils and paper, I will then scan it and upload it to the Mac.

Session 5: The fifth page

I will illustrate the characters using pencils and paper, then again I will scan it and upload it to the Mac.

Where I will add my illustrated drawings to my digitally rotoscoped background.

Session 6: The sixth page

I will illustrate the characters using pencils and paper, then again I will scan it and upload it to the Mac.

Where I will add my illustrated drawings to my digitally rotoscoped background.

Session 7: the seventh page

I will illustrate the characters using pencils and paper, then again I will scan it and upload it to the Mac.

Session 8: The eighth page

I will illustrate the characters using pencils and paper, then again I will scan it and upload it to the Mac.

Session 9: The ninth page

I will illustrate the characters using pencils and paper, then again I will scan it and upload it to the Mac.

Session 10: Final touch ups, spell check and error checking.

This session I will very thoroughly check my finished product from the first page to the last. I will check for spelling errors, any drawings that could be better, any colours that are out of place and make sure

my finished product is the best to my ability.

Health and safety:

Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from

working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.

Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening.

Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.

Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?

Water hazards.

I can move away from the work area so that any possible

spillage will not damage my work

Tripping over wires. I will use appliances that are placed near the plugs so that there is no wiring left lying around for potential injuries

Uncomfortable chairs

I can sit in a chair that I feel comfortable in. if I am uncomfortable and having problems with my back, I could

get hurt by sitting uncomfortably as my body will get used to being in a bad position. If I am not comfortable I will

begin to ache. Which will affect my work.

Eye Damage.

I can take regular breaks from the computer screen as the bright screen could damage my eyes after extensive

use.
