Why a driving course?
• Our clients want to get a licence – classes are very popular, even though they are offered in the holiday breaks
• In Dandenong area – public transport is inadequate so driving is essential
• Clients’ countries of origin have different road rules and very different attitudes to following them
• Media attention after drink driving accident at Dandenong West PS – need to address the issue

Target Client GroupClients who
• self select because of their interest in gaining a Learner’s Permit or Driver’s Licence in Victoria
• have a minimum English level ISLPR Speaking 1 Listening 1 Reading 1 Writing – not a focus (CSWE II or III clients)
• have basic computer skills with mouse and ability to access the internet
• are AMEP eligible
• often students seeking a licence for the first time
• sometimes experienced drivers overseas with little or no experience in Australia

Delivery details• Currently in Special Skills Weeks over the
holiday breaks, but could be offered as a short course in term time
• Ideally 3 hours per day for 10 days/2 weeks, but easily extended to 40 hours
• Mostly face-to-face in classroom but access to individual computers in ILC or computer lab for at least one hour per session is essential
• Learners should be able to practice tests in pairs then individually from Session 3 onwards

Methodology• Face-to-face in classroom using data show
• Whole group / small group / pairs /individual activities to assist with communication skills for employability
• Online practice as individuals
• Group discussions and problem solving activities to assist with building problem solving skills and oral communication skills for employability
• Plenty of encouragement and reinforcement to build confidence

Assessment Strategy• Select language learning outcomes from the
Certificate in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) which relate to – developing the English language skills and – knowledge of the Victorian Road Rules required
for driving safely in Victoria and obtaining a car learner permit
• Select a language learning outcome from CSWE II and CSWE III to address different levels of language proficiency within the student group
• Refer to AMES Training and Assessment Strategies for Certificates II & III in Spoken and Written English (CSWE)

Outline of the Course
• Specific Skills course for CSWE 2 and 3• Extended from 20 hours in one week to 30
hours over 2 weeks due to consistent student feedback
• Focus on content more than language
• Aims to help students – understand and learn road rules– practise hazard perception on computer– buy and insure a car
StaffingTeacher must have a thorough knowledge of current Victorian Road Rules as well as ESL qualifications
