Common features of the poultry husbandry
• 80% of households do husbandry
• 15% do industrial husbandry
• 20% do semi industrial husbandry
• 65% do traditional husbandry
• 80% of industrial chickens are grown by foreign companies
• 75% of garden chickens (semi industrial) are grown by Vietnamese companies and large scale husbandry households
• 100% of the traditionally raised poultry is done by farmers
• Small scale husbandry household:– Around 3,200 – 3,500/year– Wandering, self-feeding, self-hatching and self-nursing– Easy to catch disease, low live rate (50 - 55%), low efficiency– Small investment, suitable for local breeds
• Extensive farming and field raising:– Mainly for ducks – Dependent on crops harvested– Be the traditional method with high efficiency, also be the source for
disease infection
2. Production system
65%hộ: 50-525% lượng gc - HGHĐ
• Semi industrial husbandry:– Integrate traditional experience with modern technology – Scale: 100 - 300 heads, combine between garden and industrial raising
methods – Short raising time, quick capital
circulation, high efficiency
• Industrial husbandry:– Start from 1974– There are 11 governmental breeding farms and 106 of other economic
sectors nationwide – Before avion influenza: 2,260 farms with capacity of 1,000 – 14,000
heads/farm– Breeding production system at different levels are not synchronous, mostly
focus on producing commercial day old breeding animals from GP flocks imported from other countries
– Commercial poultry husbandry is mostly done by private farms and peasant families
– Foreign companies supply 80% of industrial breeding chickens

3. Market system
• Supply and consumption system of domestic breeding poultry – Self-sufficient
– Small scale husbandry: self-produce or buy from the area
– Hatchery for producing and trading breeding poultry: capacity 2,000 – 5,000 heads/batch
– Hatchery owner supplies his subsidiaries and purchases breeding eggs to hatch
– Sell breeding animal directly or through brokers
• Supply and consumption system of industrial breeding poultry
– Facing plenty of difficulties

4. Poultry slaughter
• Manual slaughter: 86% enterprises < 20 heads/day IFPRI, 2001: 25-30.000T/năm.
• Not ensure food safety and food hygiene– 64.5% SH are located in residential areas– 88% area < 20m2
– > 90% slaughter on floor
• Invest in building SH after avion influenza
SSOOSS
VISION 2015VISION 2015Vietnam Poultry IndustryVietnam Poultry Industry
• Backward and underdeveloped
• There are totally 32 large scale companies producing poultry meat - Pork and beef are main products- Products from chicken and ducks are limited
• More than 90% of poultry meat consumed is hot meat
5. Poultry processing
SSOOSS

General evaluation
• Husbandry are unprompted, distracted, and small scaled
• Epidemic are difficult to control
• Productivity, efficiency and competitiveness are low
• Backward slaughter and process, unsafe food hygiene

1. Plan for concentrated SH
- SH are planed to moved to the suburb. The best location is in husbandry areas
- The plan must be synchronous, convinient for businesses and easy to control food safety and food hygiene. Focus on guidance and construction of concentrated SH system
- Reach a common consent that poultry can only be consumed after being slaughtered at concentrated SH
- Establish a system for preservation, transportation and consumption by freezing facilities
VISION 2015VISION 2015Vietnam Poultry IndustryVietnam Poultry Industry
- From now to 2010, the government should have the policy for investment or support the construction of some Poultry slaughter and process houses
- Provide favorable conditions by providing preferrential loans from domestic investmnet funds or borrowed from other countries to upgrade existing SH to ensure international standards
2. Upgrade and build some SH with food safety and food hygiene standards
