the ______ of _____.
Let’s Review! (Section 6)

Let’s Review! (Section 6)
3.) Who was Uranus’ wife?
a.) Ms. Davidb.) Gaeac.) Mrs. Obamad.) Saturn
4.) Who were Uranus’ three children?
a.) Marsb.) The Cyclopsc.) The Hecatoncheiresd.)
The Cyclopes were the inventive blacksmiths of the Olympian gods.
They were skilled metal workers and
created Zeus' thunderbolts,
Neptune's trident,
and Hades' Helmet of Darkness…
and the Hundred-handed Ones (the Hecatoncheires)
Hades Helmet of Darkness was later used by Perseus while on his quest to decapitate
Medusa.
Who were Perseus and Medusa?
Well, it all started when Acrisius was told by a priestess that his daughter’s son Perseus would grow up one day
and kill him.
Acrisius couldn’t bring himself to kill his
daughter or her young son, so Acrisius had
them placed in a wooden chest and set
adrift in the sea.
They were washed up on
a island named
Seriphos among many
islands.
A kind fisherman named Dictys ("net") found the chest, opened it and found them still alive. He and his kind wife had no children and took them home and cared for both of them for many years, until
Perseus was grown.
King Polydectes, who was Dictys’ brother,
wanted to make Danae his wife, but Perseus
knew that he didn’t love her and told the king to
leave her alone.
One day when Perseus was on a trip to Samos, Polydectes told Danae that if he couldn’t have her
as his wife then he would make her his slave.
Since Danae loved only her son Perseus and her dead husband, she accepted her fate and became Polydectes’
slave.
When Perseus came back from his trip he heard what Polydectes had done and
ran to the palace to protect his mother.
Perseus found Polydectes and was about to kill him with a heavy flower vase when
his mother pleaded with him
not to.
Perseus and Dictys found Danae a job sweeping the
altar at a local temple where not even Polydectes would
bother her.
At a banquet, Polydectes tricked Perseus into making a promise he
couldn’t keep. Perseus promised that he would
bring Polydectes the head of the Gorgon.
Well, to make a long story short, Perseus went north to talk to three old sisters who
knew where the nymphs were.
The nymphs had access to the Helmet
of Darkness. If Perseus could wear the helmet it would make him invisible.
Now with the winged sandals of Mercury, the
mighty sword of the gods, a magical bag and the Helmet of Darkness
he went in search of Medusa.
Who was the Gorgon
Medusa?
She was a beautiful woman who was cursed by the gods for having an affair
with an immortal. For the rest of time her hair was turned to snakes and her
hands to eagle claws. Whenever anyone looked into her eyes, they were immediately turned into
stone.
Perseus finds Medusa
Cuts her head off while she is sleeping.
Still wearing the invisibility cap hid
Perseus so he could escape pursuit by
the two remaining, immortal Gorgon
sisters, Stheno and Euryale, who woke up when Perseus slew their sister.
After seven years he finally arrived back to the court of Polydectes. Where they made fun of him and asked Perseus to show them the head of Medusa.
When he did, they all turned to stone.
The color of Uranus as viewed from afar is do to the high levels of methane gas found in the atmosphere.
This cut-away view shows Uranus composed of an outer envelope of molecular hydrogen, helium and methane. Below this region Uranus appears to be composed of a mantle rich in water, methane, ammonia, and other elements. Uranus's core is
composed of rock and ice, and is likely no more than one Earth mass.
This is the highest resolution image of Uranus with its rings ever assembled.
This montage of the Uranian system was prepared from an assemblage of images taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft
during its Uranus encounter in January 1986.
Neptune is the 8th planet from the Sun.
The symbol for Neptune is the trident (long three-pronged fork or weapon) of Neptune, god of the sea.
Neptune is so far away that it took the space probe Voyager 2, 12 years to reach it.
Neptune is the stormiest planet. The winds there can blow up to 1,240 miles per hour, that is three times
as fast as Earth's Hurricanes.
The planet has a system of thin dark rings but they are incomplete rings and are best described as arcs.
Neptune is a sea blue color due to the methane gas in its atmosphere.
It goes around the sun once every 165 Earth Years.
There are four newly found asteroids known as Neptunian ‘Trojan’ asteroids. The Trojans orbit in lockstep with the planet. They orbit
about 5 billion kilometers — ahead of Neptune.
Pluto is the ninth planet (dwarf) from the Sun.
The symbol for Pluto is a monogram made up of P and L in Pluto (and also the initials of Percival
Lowell, who predicted its discovery).
Percival Lowell didn’t find Pluto.
He found Mars!
On February 18, 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered what was then acclaimed as the ninth planet, which was officially named Pluto on
May 1, 1930.
He was given the honor of giving it a name. Although they were calling it Planet X informally, they needed
something that matched the rest of the planets in the Solar System.
Planet “X” ?It just didn’t sound right?
The name Pluto was suggested
by Venetia Burney, an 11-year old school girl in England.
She was interested in ancient mythology, and thought that Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, made a good
name.
Pluto was the Roman god of wealth and the counterpart of the Greek Plouton, for the riches found under the Earth's surface and from
which we get "plutocrats" and "plutocracy.”
Hades is simultaneously the Greek god of the dead and the name of the underworld abode in which he lived
A Pluto day (1 rotation) is 6 Earth days and a Pluto year (1 revolution around the sun) is 248 Earth
years. It was discovered in 1930.
