ProjectBackgroundHoneyisaconsumableproductwhichisalsousedextensivelyinmakingAyurvedicmedicines.Purenaturalhoney
productionisaprofitableactivity.Itisaproductwithallyeardemand,andhasthepotentialtoprovideastable
incomeforfamiliesintheruralareas.Certaincropscanyieldhoneyforthebeekeeperaswellasbenefitfromthe
pollinationactivitiesofthebees.Therefore,thebeekeepingcomplementswellwithotheragriculturalandrural
developmentprojects.TherearemanylocationsintheNorthernpartofPakistanwherehoneybeefarmingcan
be produced through very simple mechanisms. One of them, is to keep movable wooden frames i boxes
(beehives). For this purpose, boxes are placed in locations where the floral conditions are ideal for honey
productionand thebeehivesare thenspreadwithhoneyspicetoattracthoneybees.Thesebees leave fresh
honeysuckedfromflowersinthecellsofthehoney-combprovidedinthebeehives.Whenthesecellsarefullof
honey,theyarehermeticallysealedandcappedwithwax.Then,thehoneyisextractedfromthesecells.Freshly
extractedhoneyiswarmandeasytobottle.Undergoingpropertrainingforextractionandbottlingisessential.
Honeybeefarmingisaprofitablebusinessactivitythatcanpromotethelocaleconomy.
ThePlanBeeprojectfundedbyChapelwoodFoundationandagroupofdonorssupportingwomenempowering
inChitral (via razoo) is being implementedbyHashooFoundation (HF) inGaramChashma, a vulnerable and
impoverished area in the North West of Chitral City in KPK.. Due to harsh weather conditions, this area is
frequentlyhitbynaturaldisasters.Additionally,thelandofthisareaisnotsuitableforcultivatingwheat;only
potatoesandpeasaregrownherewhicharetheonlysourcesoflivelihood.HF-teamconductedaBaselineSurvey
toassesstheprevailingsocio-economicconditionoftheselectedwomen.Theanalysisofthedatarevealedthat
thewomenaremoresusceptibletofallunderthepovertylineduetothelackofaccesstoeconomicactivities,
despitethefactthatthelocalareaisabundantinentrepreneurialavenues.Mostofthehouseholdswerefound
tobeearningbelowPKR10,000(US$95)permonth.Themajorityoftheinterviewedwomenentailedjointfamily
system,and79%ofthemareunemployed,onlyasmallnumberofindividualsgenerateincomethroughwhich
theycanhardlyfulfilltheirdailylifenecessities.Therefore,thereisatremendousdisparitybetweentheincome
earnedandtheexpenses.
ChitralisaregioninPakistanthathasgreatresourcesandpotential,butremainshighlyneglectedintermsofpoor
socio-economicindicators.Thisregionhasbeenaffectedbyseveraldisastersinthelast20years.Women'ssocial
interactionandparticipationinthelocaleconomyhavebeenaffectedbytheserecurringdisasters.Duetothe
conservativecultureandtraditionalcustomsofthesecommunities,womenfaceunequalaccesstobasicrights
andopportunities,whichleadstolackofconfidenceandparticipationindecisionmaking.HF’sPlanBeeprovides
anopportunityforthewomenandgirlsofChitraltogaintheneededtraininginhoneybeefarmingtoenablethem

toearnadecentlivelihoodtosupportthemselvesandtheirfamilies.Thus,creatinganenablingenvironmentfor
theirsocialeconomicempowerment.
ProjectIntroductionTheprojecttitledPlanBeeChitral“Replicationofmicro-enterprisemodelofhoneybeefarminginChitral(KPK)”
startedinApril2017.ItisaoneyearprojectwithanexpectedenddateofMarch2018.Theprojectisfundedby
ChapelwoodFoundationandDonorsSupporting‘PlanBee’EmpoweringWomeninChitral(viarazoo).
Atotalof31womenbenefitdirectlyfromthisprojectthroughtraining,equipmentandbeehivesprovision,while
thefamilymemberofthesewomenwillgetindirectbenefitsregardingfinancialsupport,accesstoeducation,
meethouseholdexpensesandotherlivelihoodrelateditems.

IndirectBeneficiaries:217men,women&children
Theselectedwomenbeneficiariesweretrainedinhoneybeefarmingandactivelyparticipatedintheformation
ofabeekeepersgroupnamed“ShiningStarHoneyAssociation.”
Theprojectwasimplementedinpartnershipwith“HayatRukhonHoney”thatassistedHashooFoundationin
trainingandotherprojectactivitites.
ProjectActivities
1 Thefollowingactivitieswereconductedduringthereportingperiodtoachievethe
definedmilestonesasfollows:
1.1 BaselineAssessmentSurvey
TheBaselineSurveywasconductedintheselectedareatoassessthepre-existingsocio-economicconditionsof
theregionasaguidingparametertoidentifyandselectpotentialwomentrainees.Thefollowingkeyaspectswere
thefocusofthesurvey:experienceinhoneybeefarming,incomescalepermonth,thetotalhouseholdearning
members,averagenumberofdependentsatthehouseholdlevel,etc.

Afterconductingthesurvey,theteamreachedthefollowingconclusions:
• Majorityofthewomenarefromlow-incomefamilieshardlymanagingtheirexpenses.• Expenditureishigherascomparedtotheincomeearned,andmanyselltheirlivestocktofillthisgap.• Income/expenditurepatternisveryfragile.• Levelofunemploymentishigh.Themajorityofthewomenlivinginajointfamilysystemaresingleearning
member.• Significantportionoftheincomeisallocatedtopurchasefooditemsandtobeareducationexpensesof
children.Duetopoverty,theirchildrencannotcontinuetogetahighereducationandgetdroppedoutfromschoolandcollege.
1.2 IdentificationandSelectionofBeekeepers
Aftertheidentificationofpotentialtrainees,31deservingwomenwereselectedastheprojectbeneficiariesand
a WomanBusinessGroups/WomanEnterpriseGroup was formedwill the supportofHayatRukhonHoney
Association(HRH)toensureaclosecoordinationinthepost-projectphase.

1.3 IdentificationandHiringofTrainers
Aprofessionalmastertrainer,Mr.HayatMuhammadIqbal,theChairmanofHayatRukhonHoneyAssociation,
was identifiedandhiredtoconduct thehoneybee farmingtraining.AMoUwassignedbetweenHFandthe
trainer.
HashooFoundationhas implementedsuccessfulhoneybee farmingprojects foradecadeandhasdeveloped
rapportandstrongworkingrelationwithprofessionalsinvolvedinthissector.Basedonthepastexperienceand
theproposedproject,asevendayshoneybee farmingtrainingwasarrangedfor thetraineesduringthe first
quarteroftheproject.Thetrainerusedlectures,discussion,question/answer,charts,diagramsandgroupwork
methodsformoreunderstanding.Eachdayfollowedbytheassessmentofthepreviousdayhighlightstorestore

memoriesandensurecontinuation.Fieldworkwasalsoorganizedforapracticaldemonstration.Attheendofthe
workshop, theparticipantswereaskedtogivetheir feedbackonthearrangementsandmethodsusedby the
trainer.

1.4 Inter-RegionalExposureVisit
AnInter-regionalexposurevisitwasarrangedforthetraineestoprovidethemanopportunitytointeractwith
otherbeekeepersfromdifferentareasofChitral.Onthe4thdayof theseven-daytraining,thetraineeswere
takentoJoghorinChitraltownwheretheymetwithsuccessfulhoneybeeentrepreneurandsupplierMr.Mahrab
Hussain.Thepurposeof thisvisitwastolearnhowheenteredintohoneybeefarmingandsucceededin this
business.Mr.MahrabHussainwelcomedthetraineesandfullybriefedthemonhisworkandlearningsduringthe
last20years. Itwasamotivationaland instructional inter-regionalexposurevisitwherethewomennotonly
visitedthehoneybeefarmareabutalsoexperiencedworkinotherareasofChitral.

AlltherequirementsoftheprocurementwerefollowedasperHFpolicies.Theadvertisementforpurchasingthe
beehivesandproductionkitswasdonethroughmassmedia.Afterthesuccessfulacquisition,HashooFoundation
successfullydistributed3beehivesandaproductionkittoeachofthe31womentrainee.
1.8 Follow-up/MonitoringVisitstoProjectAreas
Followupmonitoringvisitswereperformedatheprojectsitetoevaluatethebeehivesandlearnabouttheprogressoftheproject.ThebeekeepersgatheredatthehomeofGeneralSecretaryinthevillageYurjogh-Garamchashmatodiscusstheissues/challengestheyhavefaced.

Observations
• HoneyBeeFarmersAssociationreportedtohaveproblemswiththeproductionofhoneyduetotheinfluxofbeehivesfromthedownsideofDistrictbyotherbeekeepers.
• Productionofhoneythisquarterisexpectedtobelessthanprojectedduetothelatedeliveryofthebeehives.
• Beekeepersareoptimistictheproductionwillincreaseduringthefallseason.
• WomenGroupmadearrangementswithMr.MuhammadRasheedtomobilizethebeehivestothedownsideofDistrict.
• Duetotheengagementofwomeninpotatocropsduringthetopeakseason,theyproposedforthependingplannedtrainingactivitiestobecarriedforwardfornextmonth.

2.1DevelopingStrongLinkageswithLocal,NationalandInternationalMarketFor sustainability of the project, the women group was established and linked with Hayat Rukhon Honey
Association for marketing purpose.Furthermore, the enterprise department ofHashooFoundationisinprocessofsigninganMoUwiththeChitralChamberofCommerceandIndustry(CCCI)andChitralCommunitiesDevelopment Network (CCDN) for furtherprojection of the project activities andsustainable development of the formedgroupbylinkingitwiththeCCCI.

3.22-DaysessiononIncomeUtilization/ImprovedNutritionandBasicHealthcareThe teamcoordinatedwith theWomenBusinessGroup to start all the three trainings.However, due to theengagementofthewomenofGaramChashmavalleywiththepotatoharvestingseason,thetrainingscouldnotbestartedinthe2ndquarter.Now,thebannertopromotethetrainigisfinalizedandsentforprinting.Theteamwillstartsoonthependingtrainingactivities.
Duringthereportingperiod,thebeneficiariesprovidedthefollowingfeedback:
• BeehiveswereprovidedinthemonthofJunecausingthemtomissedthepeakharvestingseason.

• DuetothelargenumberofbeehivesinfluxfromotherentrepreneursfromdownsideofDistrictareas,thebeneficiariescomplainedaboutlessproductionandyield.
• Beneficairesaresatisfiedaboutthequalityoftheproductionkits,beehivesandtrainingprovidedbyHashooFoundation.
• BeneficiariesrequestedHashooFoundationtosupportthemintermsoftransportationofthebeehivestodownsideoftheDistrictinthefirstyearonly.Accordingtothem,theyhaveverylittleproductionthisyearanditwillnotbepossibleforthemtoaffordthetransportationcharges.However,theyplantoovercomethesituationnextyearandonward.
FindingsandRecommendations
TheHFteamreportedthefollowingthisreportingquarter:
• TheChitralareaisimpoverishedandhasaveryhighunemploymentlevels.Thefamilyunitexpenditureishigherthantheincomeearned.Hence,theyselltheirlivestocktofillthisgap.Thewomenliveinajointfamilysystemwithonlyoneearningunit(familymember)thathardlymanagetheirexpenses.Themainportionoftheincomeisallocatedtopurchasefooditemsandtopayfortheelementaryeducationoftheirchildren.Duetopoverty,their children drop out from school and cannot continue higher education or college. Therefore, thesecommunitiesarethankfulforHF’sinterventionsandcountwithourcontinuedsupport.
BasedontheaboveHFrecommends:
• Developmarketlinkagestohelpextendthewomen’sbusinessvolumeandproduction.• Prepare a comprehensive capacity building plan comprising both hands-on and theory to promote the
replicationofthisactivity.• Developacontingencyandresponseplantoprepareincaseofnaturaldisasters.• HFshouldcontinueitssupporttopromotethesustainabilityoftheprojectandthequalityoflifeofthenew
beekeepersandtheirfamilies.

Conclusion
ThePlanBeeprojectfundedbyChapelwoodFoundationandDonorsSupporting‘PlanBee’EmpoweringWomeninChitral (via razoo),and implementedbyHashooFoundation is runningsmoothlyanddirectlybenefiting31womeninUnionCouncilLotkoh,Tehsil&DistrictChitral.Duringthereportingperiod,theprojectsuccessfullyachieved its definedmilestones suchasbaseline survey, identification, and selectionofwomen trainees. Theselectedwomenweretrainedinhoneybeefarmingandequippedwithproductionkitsandbeehives.Anexposurevisitwasarrangedforthetraineestogetinspirationfromsuccessfulhoneyproducersofthesector.TheHashooFoundationteamfacilitatedtheselectedwomentoformahoneyfarminggroup,named“ShiningStarHoneyAssociation”toserveasaplatformthattheycouldutilizetoupgradetheirskillsandproductionandcontributepositively to incomegenerationhoneymicro-enterprise to improvetheir livesandprovideeducationto theirchildren.
