Must see to believe! $6900 . Call (660)525-3600. Mindy Stepp says she started working with Sedalia Habitat for Hu- manity four years ago as a means of learning prop- erty maintenance and building trade skills to help her keep up her own rental properties. “Someone suggested it would be a good way to work with contractors and seasoned construction guys,” Stepp said. A former president of the Sedalia Landlord’s Association, she now serves as the president of the board for Sedalia Habitat, a Christian-based volunteer organization which builds affordable homes for qualified low- income families and indi- viduals. While learning a few trade skills may have motivated Stepp in the beginning, the feeling of “building something that lasts for someone” soon took over. “I was hooked after my first build. It is such an emotional thing, just to see the look on the faces of people when you turn over the keys to their own home. It is a feeling like nothing else,” Stepp said. Since the Sedalia chap- ter of the organization opened in 1988, volun- teers have built 25 homes and are currently com- pleting work on their next project at a home along East Tower Street. After that, the group will be re- habbing a home donated to the organization by the estate of its late owner. “This is my first rehab and I am excited to see how it turns out,” Stepp said. In addition to her role as president, Stepp also serves as the chairwoman of the group’s fundraising committee. She said bake sales, financial and in- kind donations and other fundraisers help the group secure the roughly $60,000 it takes to com- plete a project. As part of that role, Stepp oversees an ongo- ing garage sale the group launched this spring, which is held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday and Saturday at the Ped- dler’s Post, at 24587 state Route O about one mile north of U.S. Highway 50, east of Sedalia. Sale items, which in- clude plumbing and painting supplies, door hardware, caulk, silicone, light fixtures and ceiling fans, all come as donated items left over from con- struction projects. Stepp said items are priced lower than their retail value “so we can use the donated items to help people that don’t neces- sarily qualify for a home.” “Everything costs less than it would in the store, and if someone really needs an item I am will- ing to negotiate,” Stepp said. Space for the sale at Peddler’s Post was do- nated by the business’ owner and Stepp’s friend, Brenda Sprinkle. “I have just been asso- ciated with it through her for the last couple of years. I haven’t been out to help build, but I care about what they are doing and this seemed like a way to help,” Sprinkle said. Stepp said community support like that of Sprin- kle is essential to helping Sedalia Habitat continue its mission. “What Habitat does would be impossible without volunteers and community support,” Stepp said. “You can give to other charities, but Habitat makes something tangible. People can see the home going up. I think that makes a differ- ence.” She's in rehab — the building kind — and she's proud of it By Dennis Rich Super July Savings Spot And Future Pricing Call For Current Price Attention Wheat Growers! It’s Christmas in July as D & T Quilt Shophosts their annual sale July 14, 15 & 16

Theresa Gerber invites sewing enthusiasts of all levels to her “Christmas in July Sale”for fantastic savings throughout the shop. She will be open the 14th and 15th from 9amto 5pm and open the 16th from 9am to 4pm.

Area quilters will want to mark their calendars as Theresa Gerberis gearing up for her Christmas in July Sale. This annual event isTheresa’s biggest sale of the year and will feature sales on fabrics &quilting supplies.

Theresa opened D & T Quilt Shop in 1988; but her love for quiltingand sewing started many years prior to that when her mother beganteaching her how to sew and quilt. Since opening her business,Theresa has helped many people create quilts that are works of art.

Theresa and her husband Doyle moved to Sedalia in 1988, afterDoyle retired from the Air Force. They then opened Gerber SmallEngine in 1988, and in 1991 built the quilt shop. Since that time theyhave added on to the building and now have approximately 1,200square feet of space.

Theresa says that everyone knows she loves fabrics and that’s whyher shop is full of many beautiful ones to choose from. Theresa helpsher customers select the best fabrics for their sewing projects and sellsa variety of them with over 7,000 bolts of fabric in stock. In addition,Theresa sells patterns, books, embroidery blocks, DMC floss, notions,YLI quilting thread, a full line of Sulky thread, Mettler thread, ISAcordThread for machine Enby, OESD Stabalizers, and more.

Theresa has worked with many quilting guilds. “All quiltingguilds are welcome and we have a good time,” Theresa said. She willalso sew tops together as well as hand quilts and machine quilts. “Ihave friends that help me with this. My best friend, who lives inPeculiar, MO, comes down to the shop and helps me. I also have twoladies that machine quilt and two ladies that hand quilt. Also, if youhave a quilt that someone left you or just one you started yourself anddon’t know how to finish, we can do that for you.” For convenience, orders can be shipped and customers can sign on for email flyers andsale specials.

D & T Quilt Shop is located at 3620 So. Marshall Avenue in Sedaliaand is open 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday and 9am to 4pm onSaturday. For more information call 660-826-4788.
