KodaikanalisacityinthehillsofTalukdivisionofDindiguldistrictinthestateofTamilNadu,India.Kodaikanalisreferredtoasthe"PrincessofHillstations"andhasalonghistoryasaretreatandpopulartouristdestination.It'salotcoolerintemperaturethanlowerelevationcitiessuchasChennai.

Kodaikanalwasestablishedin1845asarefugefromthehightemperaturesandtropicaldiseasesoftheplains.Muchof thelocaleconomyisbasedontheHospitalityindustryservingtourism.

PlacesofInterest

Kodaikanalhasseveralscenicnaturalattractionswhichareenjoyedbyitsvisitorsandmakeitapopularromanticdestinationfornewlyweds.Thesearedescribedinorderofdistancefromthebusstand.

KodaikanalLake,0.5km(0.3mi) fromthebusstand, isanartificial, roughlystarshaped45ha(60acres) lakebuilt in1863.ItisrecognizedasKodaikanal'smostpopulargeographiclandmarkandtouristattraction.RowboatsandpedaloscanbehiredattheKodaikanalBoatClubwithitsmainentranceneartheonlyfivestarhotelinKodaikanal,TheCarlton.Horsesandbicyclescanbehiredbesidethelakeforshortperiods.The5kilometers(3mi)paththatskirtstheperipheryofthislovelylakeisafavouritewalkforthelocalsandtouristsalike.

BryantPark,Justeastofthelakeand0.5km(0.3mi)fromthebusstand,isawonderfullymaintained20.5acres(8.3ha)botanicalgarden.Theparkwasplannedandbuiltin1908byaforestofficerfromMadurai,H.D.Bryant,andnamedafterhim.With325speciesoftrees,shrubsandcactuses,theparkisarainbowofstunningflowersduringthepeakseason.

Alargesectionisdedicatedtonearly740varietiesofroses.Thereisa1857EucalyptustreeandaBodhitreewhichaddsareligioussignificancetothepark.Ornamentalplantsarecultivatedinanurseryforsale.Theparkorganizeshorticulturalexhibitsandflowershowseverysummer,tocoincidewiththepeakseason.Entrancefeetotheparkisnominalanditisopenthroughouttheyear.

Coaker'sWalk,0.5km(0.3mi) fromthebusstand,constructedbyLt.Coaker in1872, isa1kilometers(0.62mi)pavedpedestrianpathrunningalongtheedgeofsteepslopesonthesouthernsideofKodai.Thewalk,windingaroundMountNebo,starts in front of the Van Allen hospital, running parallel to the Van Allen Hospital Road and joins themain road besideSt.Peter'sChurch,providingastunningpanoramicviewoftheplains.OnacleardayonecanviewasfarasDolphin'sNoseinsouth, the valley of thePambarRiver in the southeast, Periyakulam townand even the city ofMadurai. A fascinating rarephenomenoncalledBrockenspectrecanbewitnessed,whenapersoncanseehisshadowonthecloudswitharainbowhalo.Thisoccurswhenthesunisbehindtheviewerandcloudsandmistaretothefront.Thereisanobservatorywithatelescopehalfwayalongthewalk.Entrancefeetothewalkwayisnominalanditisopenthroughouttheyear.

BearSholaFalls,3kilometers(2mi)fromthebusstand,isatallwaterfallinaReserveforest.Thefinalapproachtothisquietareaisagentlyclimbingfootpath.

GreenValleyView,(formerlycalledSuicidePoint)5.5kilometers(3mi)fromthebusstandandnearthegolfcourse,hasanexcellentpanoramicviewoftheplainsandasheerdropof1,500meters(4,921ft)overlookingtheVaigaiDamtothesouth.Thestairwayleadinguptoitishighlycommercializedandlinedwithrowsofshopstotempttourists.

ShenbaganurMuseumofNaturalHistory,6kilometers(4mi)fromthebusstand,foundedin1895,isopentothepublicforviewingtheiroutstandingtaxidermycollectionofmorethan500speciesofanimals,birdsandinsectsanda livingcollectionofover300exoticorchidspecies.ThemuseumisaffliatedwithLoyolaCollegeinChennaiandexhibitsartifactsoftheancientPalaiyartribespeoplewhosedescendantsstillliveinthesehills.

KodaikanalSolarObservatory6kilometers(4mi)fromthebusstandonObservatoryRoad,at2,343meters(7,687ft)is the highest location nearKodai. The first observationswere commenced here in 1901. FormerDirector JohnEvershed,discovered the phenomenon of radial motion in sunspots, now known as the Evershed effect. The Kodaikanal TerrestrialTelescopecanviewagrandpanoramaincluding:SothupparaiDam,VaigaiDam,PeriyakulamandVarahariver.ThisIndianInstituteofAstrophysicsfacilityhasacomprehensiveAstronomicalSciencemuseumwithorganizedpublictours,accesstotheastronomylibrary,andschedulednighttimetelescopicskyviewing.Itisopendailytothepublicduringpeakseason,andafewhourseachFridaytherestoftheyear.

PillarRocks,8kilometers(5mi)fromthebusstand,isasetofthreegiantrockpillarswhichstand122meters(400ft)high.[41]ManagedbytheTamilNaduForestDepartment,Theviewpointcanbecrowdedbut isnotcommercialized.There isanexcellentpublicgardenadjacenttotheviewpoint.

Gunacaves,madepopularby theTamilmovieGuna,previouslycalledDevilsKitchen,aredeepbatinfestedchambersbetweenthethreegiganticbouldersthatarethePillarRocks.Thedeepnarrowravinesofthecavesarenowclosedtopublicduetothetrajicdeathsoftwelveyouthsthere.[citationneeded]Thesedangerouscavesarehighlyprotectednow,andtouristscanseesectionsofthecavesystemfromafar.

SilverCascade,8kilometers(5mi)fromKodaikanalatawidebendinthelongandwindingLawsGhatRoad,ataltitude1,800meters(5,906ft), isa55meters(180ft)waterfall formedfromtheoutflowofKodaikanalLake.[43]Thewaterquality isreportedlypoorandnotgoodenoughforbathing.Thisimpressivewaterfallisapopularstopforfirsttimevisitors.Thereareafewsouvenirandfruitvendorsandmanymonkeyshere.Thereisalsoasmallerbutmoreserenewaterfallbelowthebridgewhichcrossesthestreamhere.

Dolphin'sNose,8kilometers(5mi)fromthebusstand,isflatrockprojectingoverabreathtakingchasm6,600feet(2,000m)deep.Itisanundisturbedarea1kilometers(1mi)downaverysteeprockytrailbeginningsoonafterPambarBridge.Orangejuicevendorsalongthetrailofferawelcomereststop.Beautifulviewsofsteeprockyescarpmentsrisingfromtheplainscanbeseen.TheoldvillageofVellagavicanbereachedthrougharuggedbridlepathhere.AshortpavedwalkwayleadsfromtheroadheretoPambarfalls(whichisalsolocallyaddressedas'LirilFalls'afterthefamousLirilSoapAdvertisementfilmingin1985).

KurinjiAndavarMurugan temple, 4 kilometers (2 mi) from the busstand, is famous for its Kurinji flower whichblossomsintheareaonlyonceevery12years.ThedeityhereiscalledSriKurinjiEasware,whoisinfactLordMurugan.Thistemplewas built in 1936 by a European lady, who on coming to India, converted toHinduism.She changed her name toLeelavathiandmarriedaMr.Ramanathan.SheisalsoknownasLadyRamanathan.ThistempleisunderthemanagementofArulmighuDhandayuthapaniSwamyThiruKovil,Palani.
