The genesis of the TERI University is rooted in the comprehensive research, consultancy, and outreach activities of TERI, a

not-for-profit independent research institute recognized globally for its contribution to scientific and policy research in the realms of energy, environment, and sustainable development. TERI was established in 1974, and by 1982 it had initiated research activities in the fields of Energy, Environment, and Sustainable Development. These activities provided environment-friendly platforms to address a host of issues ranging from rural energy issues, to shaping the development of the Indian oil and gas sector, tackling global climate change across the continents, enhancing forest conservation efforts among local communities, advancing solutions to growing urban transport and air pollution problems and promoting energy efficiency in the Indian industry. TERI has come a long way and is now a dynamic organization with a staff strength of over 1000, drawn from multidisciplinary and highly specialized fields. Its offices and regional centres, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, are involved in a diverse range of activities. TERI is the largest developing-country institution working to move society towards a sustainable future through training, capacity building, and education. Recognized as a deemed university by the University Grants Commission in 1999, the higher

education arm of TERI initially operated under the name of TERI School of Advanced Studies, but was later renamed as TERI University on 5 October 2006, when UGC regulations were relaxed.

AdministrationThe University has a Board of Management, which is responsible for its overall administration and control. Dr R K Pachauri is the Chancellor of the University, Dr Leena Srivastava the Vice-Chancellor, and Dr Rajiv Seth is the Registrar of the University. The Chancellor is the Chairman of the Board. The Academic Council decides the academic policy. The Council approves curricula, courses, and examination results. It appoints committees to look into specific academic matters arising from time to time. The Vice Chancellor is the Chairperson of the Academic Council. The academic programmes of the University integrate the research experience gained in TERI into the academic curricula to provide a practical and contemporary context to learning. Having begun with doctoral programmes in 2001, TERI University has gone on to offer various master's degrees since 2003. The doctoral programmes and research centre around four basic themes: natural resources management, biotechnology, policy and regulation, and energy and environment. About 100 students are currently enrolled in the doctoral programmes and 600 in the master’s programmes. The M Sc programmes (Environmental Studies, natural Resources Management) started with the setting up of the Department of natural Resources through an endowment from the Ford Foundation. These programmes are now in their tenth year. In 2005, the University was entrusted with the task of introducing a master’s programme in Public Policy and Sustainable Development for mid-career civil servants of the Government of India; the first batch of students were enrolled in January 2006. The year also saw the first batch of students inducted into the new MBA programme in Infrastructure. This is a unique programme catering to the growing infrastructure demands envisaged for India and has been supported by chairs from the national Thermal Power Corporation and the national Hydroelectric Power Corporation. In 2009, the University launched four new master’s programmes—M Sc in Climate Change Science and Policy, M Sc in Economics, MBA in Business Sustainability, and M Tech in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management. In 2010, MA programme in Sustainable Development Practice was launched. This is supported by the MacArthur Foundation. TERI

University was one of the ten institutions chosen worldwide, by the Foundation, for support. TERI University was, recently, awarded the 'India Today' award for the most innovative curriculum. CollaborationsIn February 2002, TERI University entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies of the yale University. Since 2005, with support from the VK Rasmussen Foundation, there has been a regular exchange of faculty and students between the two universities. TERI University also has MoUs with the University of Iceland, Michigan State University, north Carolina State University, and Freie University, Berlin. These inter-institutional MoUs are aimed at facilitating a mutually beneficial exchange of students, faculty, knowledge, resources, and ideas.

The Road AheadTERI University has been set up as an institution of higher learning to meet the needs of a rapidly developing India. While it draws strength from the ethos and traditions of India, as a global institution it reaches out to source knowledge from across the globe. Its key strength also lies in the reservoir of knowledge, experience, and research of the parent body, TERI. Since October 2008, TERI University has been operating from its energy-efficient and green campus at Vasant Kunj in new Delhi. The state-of-the-art teaching facilities, vibrant academic environment, and the richness of programmes that have been launched represent a refreshing flavour of innovation and a strong relevance for addressing the challenges of tomorrow.

TERI University aims to create a workforce that is empowered to better align sustainability considerations in the pursuit of economic growth and human well-being. For doing so, we ensure that the enormous learning we have from TERI on the diverse, yet inter-related, aspects of Sustainable Development, enhanced with the research and knowledge of our own faculty members, is used to create cutting edge, inter-disciplinary curricula. This curriculum also benefits from a continuous feedback from academic peers at the national and global levels, from the employers of our students and from the students themselves—resulting in refined content and pedagogy on an annual basis. The active engagement of international faculty members and guest lecturers, alongwith the presence of international students on campus, ensures that a student of TERI University not only qualifies as a “sustainability professional” but is also comfortable in a multicultural setting. With a set of identifiable areas of domain expertise, these students have the unique advantage of appreciating the roles and contributions of different disciplines in finding solutions for complex real-life challenges. Engagement with research projects, industry exposure and field visits—including, in some cases, international exchanges—all contribute to the making of these well-rounded individuals who are seeking to engage usefully with global development processes. We are sure that you will appreciate the value that TERI University students bring to the workforce and will, while deploying them productively in your organization, encourage them to hone their skills further for the greater good. We would, of course, at all times value any feedback that you would like to offer us.

TERI University is a unique institution of higher learning that benefits from the enormous range of cutting edge research carried out by TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute). The challenge of improving the environment, both at the local and global levels is an issue that is increasingly engaging the attention of corporate organizations in India and abroad and, of course, governments and civil society in general. TERI University’s M Sc programmes are designed specifically to help organizations, particularly in the corporate sector, meet challenges that are emerging throughout the world, with emphasis on emerging public attitudes and regulatory regimes for protecting the environment. These programmes are also of great value to the scientific community, policy-makers, as well as representatives of civil society. Given the practical orientation of all the work that TERI carries out, the University’s programmes are necessarily interdisciplinary in nature and focus on problem solving. Students who graduate would, therefore, be uniquely qualified to undertake major initiatives in the efficient management of natural resources and the prevention of environmental pollution. TERI University’s programmes equip students to solve problems in these fields at source rather than through end-of-pipe interventions. These save costs and result in longer-term benefits for the organizations concerned and for society at large.

The MA (SDP), launched at TERI University in July 2010, aims to develop an international cadre of development professionals,

well-equipped to tackle beyond cultural boundaries and across sectoral divisions, the interwoven challenges of extreme poverty, disease, climate change issues, and ecosystem vulnerability. Though a large number of institutions are currently engaged in providing short-term and sector-specific professional training to development practitioners, master's-level programmes on multidisciplinary education are offered by only a handful of institutes. The MA (SDP) programme at TERI University is designed based upon the recommendations of the International Commission on Education for Sustainable Development Practice that executed a global situation analysis of development training programmes, during 2007–08. TERI University was one of the first ten universities chosen by the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation to receive seed funding to create the new master’s degree programme in Sustainable Development Practice. Presently, 20 universities worldwide offer similar courses. Globally recognized as Master’s in Development Practice (MDP), this is a two-year full-time programme. By its very philosophy, the programme targets to fill the need for “development professionals”, with cross-sectoral problem solving skills in the overhauling issues of sustainable development encompassing four knowledge domains—natural sciences and engineering, health sciences, social sciences, and management. MA (SDP) based at TERI University is linked to the Global network of MDP Programmes

coordinated by the Global Secretariat of MDP based at Columbia University, USA. The Global network includes various universities and a broad range of collaborating organizations around the world offering a Master’s in Development Practice (MDP). At present, the Global network consists of 24 MDP programmes, offered at universities in 16 countries in six continents, and more than 50 collaborating organizations ranging from local and regional governmental and non-governmental public and private organizations, to large, multinational agencies. The MDP network of universities is further enriched by establishing linkages with diverse organizations working in areas of health, ecology, poverty-alleviation, and sustainable livelihoods. This synergy proves mutually beneficial for the Global MDP network and the agencies. The MDP network provides expertise in holistic approaches while the network of organizations provides an enabling platform to prepare through opportunities of field site placement, internships, and finally by employing well-prepared development practitioners.

Partner InstitutesMA (SDP) academic curriculum at TERI University has got support and assistance from its partner institutions, such as north Carolina State University, USA; School of International Development, University of East Anglia, UK; and The Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Spain in the initial years. Development Organizations like CARE India, Foundation of Ecological Security and Development Alternatives have also been steady partners who have enriched our field training component.
