FROM THE DESK OF VICE CHANCELLOR

Maritime industry is one of the most dynamic constituents of economy in a fast-growing maritime country

like India. We have a long coastline of approximately 7,500 kilometers and an extensive network of inland

waterways with a potential navigable length of 14,500 kilometers. Nearly 95 per cent of India’s foreign trade

by volume and 75 per cent by value is handled by sea. Maritime Industry is one of the thrust areas of

government of India. Sagarmala Project and setting up of maritime clusters are some of the government

initiatives which are going to invigorate the Indian maritime industry in the days to come.

The Indian Maritime University (IMU) came into being through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) on 14th

November 2008 as a Central University and is poised to play a key role in the maritime education and

research. It is the only University in India, exclusively focusing on maritime sector. IMU is committed to

provide quality maritime education, training and research to cater to the needs of industry as well as research

fraternity.

The Visakhapatnam Campus of IMU evolved from the erstwhile National Ship Design and Research Centre

(NSDRC) which was subsumed in to IMU as per the IMU Act, 2008. The Campus believes in the holistic

development of students and lays stress on integrating theory with practice. The undergraduate and post-

graduate programs in Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering (NA & OE) as well as the post-graduate

program in Dredging & Harbor Engineering (D & HE) are unique courses offered at IMU Visakhapatnam

Campus which aim to provide qualified professionals for ship designing and offshore structural designing

firms, Shipbuilding and Repair Yards, Classification Societies, Shipping Companies, Dredging and Port

Infrastructure Industry.

This year, IMU Visakhapatnam Campus has moved to its new and permanent location in Sabbavaram Mandal

of Visakhapatnam District on 110 acres of land allocated to it. The infrastructure has been developed to cater

to the academic needs of the students.

I am glad to say that the professionally designed curriculum and the teaching provided by our highly qualified

faculty and infrastructure have equipped the graduating class of students with the necessary knowledge and

knowhow required to succeed in a highly competitive business environment. I wish a Happy Placement

experience to the students as well as the prospective employers and look forward to the continued patronage

STUDENT LIFE

The students of IMU Visakhapatnam Campus are

exposed to a vast array of academic and extra-

curricular activities. The campus boasts of well-

equipped, cutting edge academic resource

facilities which students can avail with ease. In

addition to this, students are also provided with

ample facilities for indulging in sports, fitness,

and various extra-curricular activities which help

to expand their horizons. A few of these facilities

are mentioned below.

LIBRARY

A state-of-the-art library has been provided with a

multitude of resources from all over the globe, in

both paper-bound and digital format. It is equipped

with an immaculate collection of books, journals,

magazines, pamphlets, projects, and data for refer-

ence. Moreover, there are systems equipped with

easy access to digital resources and documenta-

tion from various sources. The library along with

its competent and helpful managers cultivates

conducive environment for obtaining knowledge

with ease. The library boasts of access to reputed

open source digital platforms like J-GATE, OPAC,

IMarEst and IHS Fairplay (Shipping Encyclopae-

dia). The library also has regular subscriptions to

various newspapers, magazines and newsletters to

keep the students posted on day-to-day affairs.

COMPUTER LAB AND NETWORK

The campus is host to a well-endowed computer

laboratory with high end systems. These systems

are also resourced with licensed high-end soft-

ware like NAPA, MAXSURF, AVEVA, ANSYS,

MATLAB, AUTOCAD etc. Students are also pro-

vided with high speed network connectivity, and a

fast and safe Wi-Fi connection in both the campus

and in the hostel premises.

SPORTS AND FITNESS

Students are not only encouraged to excel in ac-

ademics but are also encouraged to widen their

horizons in the field of sports and fitness. The cam-

pus has an infrastructure which caters to various

indoor and outdoor games like football, cricket,

futsal, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, basket-

ball, chess, carrom etc. A well-equipped gym is

also available. Various competitions like Cricket

League, Football League and other inter and intra

college sports activities are organized on a large

scale.

STUDENT SOCIETY

The campus has its own officially recognised stu-

dent body, Indian Maritime University Student So-

ciety (IMUSS), which represents the students’ in-

terest. The student body acts as a medium between

the students and the academic/management. The

main objective of the student body is to conduct

all sports and cultural events, including festivals

and our technical fest, smoothly and efficiently.

LA OLA

The campus is also privileged to have its own e-

newsletter termed ‘La Ola’ which publishes ar-

ticles, both in technical and non-technical areas,

from students as well as professionals in the mar-

itime industry. It has monthly releases and is ac-

knowledged by other campuses. ‘La Ola’ has even

managed to capture the attention of RINA due to

its high-quality content.

LEARN SHIP DESIGN

Learn Ship Design (LSD) is India’s first student

managed society that facilitates the confluence of

the industry and academia by sharing real time in-

sights from industry and academia through survey

reports, interviews of industry leaders and articles

from academic experts and students. The society

runs a reputed blog and also publishes its content

in print media through its exclusive magazine

Navisieger in partnership with Marine Insight.

LABORATORIES

The campus has an Electrical, Electronics and a

Noise and Vibration Laboratory with state-of-the-

art instruments for use by students in

accomplishing their practical learning. A large

drawing hall is also present. Students are also

given the opportunity to avail the lab facilities in

Indian Institute of Technology Madras and NSTL

(Naval Science and Technological Laboratory,

Visakhapatnam) for carrying out practical

experiments. In IIT Madras, students are given

exposure to various experiments for ships like

model resistance test, open water test and self-

propulsion test.

MODEL MAKING

Our students have participated and won prizes in

numerous model making events in various

colleges. Most notably in Transtech (Tolani

Maritime Institute), Samudramanthan (IIT

Kharagpur) and Prayaan (IMU Mumbai).

ACTIVITIES IN CAMPUS

In addition to the various competitions and festivals, our campus is also privileged to organise its

farewell cum cultural fest, ‘Seheri’. ‘Seheri’ is jam packed with various events like dance, music

and skits, wherein students from each of the four houses- Nipat, Nirghat, Kiltan and Veer

(influenced by the names of the victorious Indian Naval warships that actively took part in the 1971

Indo-Pakistan war) compete against each other to prove their mettle. ‘Seheri’ also serves as an

award ceremony to reward the students for their meritorious performances throughout the academic

year. The division of students into various houses invigorates a healthy competitive atmosphere in

the campus. The other major event held in our campus is the biannual technical fest ‘Shreshtha’.

Students from various colleges are invited to take part in the various events that are held. A variety of

core and non-core related events are held like model making, bridge construction, paper

presentation, exhibition etc.

Moreover, our campus is frequently visited by distinguished people from the industry and corporate

world that give an insight to students on various aspects like introduction to advanced software and

computing methods, subject areas and applications and complement them with workshops to assess

the extent of student participation.

Furthermore, the students have participated and won in various events outside the campus, notably

Samudramanthan (the Techfest of IIT, Kharagpur), Transtech (Tolani Maritime Institute), the Nation-

al Sports Meet in Hyderabad and several events at other IMU campuses.

DESIGN HALL The campus is facilitated by an indigenous Design Hall, equipped with high end systems. The design

hall has terminals with high-end design softwares which have eased the design and drafting jobs of

vessels which were previously done by hand-sketched naval architecture drawings. Not only ship

design, other several acclaimed software like Star CCM+ and ANYSYS Fluent for Computational

Fluid Dynamics, Altair Hyperworks and ANSYS Workbench/Mechanical for Finite Element Analysis

and various modules of AutoDesk are also present. Thus, the students are exposed to a practical ap-

plication-based environment apart from theoretical learning from a very early stage. The students are

encouraged to take up various projects in their final year, the 7th semester consisting of the mandatory

Ship Design Project and the 8th semester being any other suitable project of their choice moulding

them aptly as a competent designer for future prospects. These facilities along with the expertise of

our highly-skilled faculty help the students to accomplish their project goals in a holistic manner.

STUDENT INITIATIVE AND CLUBS

New life has been breathed into the campus with the introduction of three

clubs, Music and Dance (MAD), The Paper Studio (TPS), and Vizione.

MAD: Music expresses something special, something tacit which need not be

verbalized but still inspires one to dance at the right tune. All this happens in

MAD -Music and Dance club of IMU Vizag where the right exposure turns a

tyro into a virtuoso.

Vizione: A Photograph tells a story which words fail to tell. Vizione is a

sanctum for aspiring photographers who wish to capture souls and not just

smiles. They wait, click and gift people a plethora of memories.

TPS: “Sometimes only paper will listen you.” The Paper Studio is a troupe of

artists and writers who express their feelings on paper. Art is a form of human

expression which can be seen as the artist’s sleight of hand on his mood.

Writing is a way to paint a picture, to form an escape from reality and take you

wherever you would like to go and TPS provides the right platform to exhibit

it.
