"WE'RE:ONIT!"
By the time this editorial is printed our new
website will be published and my primary
"Spring Project" will be completed. What
started out as a simple remodeling projectsoon turned into a full blown new construc-
tion project thanks to the input and many great ideas of our employ-
ees and customers. Speaking of customers, they are the center piece
of our new website and the first faces that will greet you when you
visit www.plasterer.com. Like any business, your customers define
who you are. I am especially proud and thankful of the many gener-
ous comments our customers have made about Plasterer Equipment.
From the first click, a visitor will know what Plasterer is all about.
r1-
Positioning ourselves as a technological leader in our industry, I
think it is important that our website has valuable tools and reflects
the "high tech" abilities of our products and services. Many down-
loads will be available including product brochures, a rental rate
card, company brochures, and a credit application to name a few.
The "high tech" abilities are seen in a section dedicated to JDLink,
Integrated Grade Control, and Tier IV engines and emissions. Check
out these exciting new products at www.plasterer.com. When it
comes to technology ... "We're on it!"
Lastly, I think it is important that we tell our story. In just three
years, Plasterer Equipment Company will be one hundred years
old! That's a wow (at least for me). Many people don't know that
Plasterer is a family name and started in business as a Waterloo
tractor dealership in 1912, six years before John Deere purchased
the Waterloo Tractor Works and began manufacturing farm tractors.
We have a long history in the local community and have been solid
partners with John Deere from the very beginning. Our employee's
really took to this section of our website. I was surprised with their
interest and willingness to participate. It soon became apparent to
me that the "Plasterer Story" is really their story. Without them,
there is no Plasterer Equipment and certainly no customer testimo-
nials. They were just as anxious for our new website as I was!
I invite you to visit our new website and see what we are about as
told by our customers. Our "story" maybe of interest too and the
many downloads available just may make this site worthy of a book-mark!
Best wishes for a successful 2009

When you hear the word trouble-
shooting, what image immediatelysprings to mind? Probably a technician
spending hours crawling around on amachine with wrenches, screwdrivers,
and voltmeters, right? That perceptionis about to change thanks to the nextgeneration of machine servicing -onboard diagnostics.
Availableon John Deere backhoes,
loaders, motor graders, and crawlers,
onboard diagnostics eliminate hours oftraditional troubleshooting. Awealth ofdiagnostic information is available rightfrom the machine's monitor, so opera-tors and technicians can frequently
tell immediately what system requiresattention without a wrench, laptop, orspecial diagnostic tool.
The major advantage of onboarddiagnostics is uptime. "The systempinpoints the problem not only by
displaying service codes, but by givinga written description in plain English,"explains Bob Tyler,John Deere productmarketing manager, backhoes. "Even a
novice operator can precisely describethe fault without needing to get thehelp of a technician."
Howitworks
Onboard computers continuously
check machine systems, includingthe engine, transmission, cooling, andhydraulics. Temperature-, pressure-,and speed-sensor information is avail-able for the various systems throughthe machine's monitor. The easy-to-navigate LCDmonitor on the K-SeriesLoader, for example, provides easy,
pushbutton access to 11differentparameters for the engine and coolingsystem alone.
Onboard diagnostics display a wealth ofinformationthrough the machine's monitor, including the circuit or component wherethe fault occurred, the type of fault, the
I c~m~~.ter cO~!;Iected to the co~ponent, wire color andmumber, connectors, andnumber of occurrences.
When one of the parameters exceeds
limits, a diagnostic trouble code anddescription are sent to the monitor. In the past when a problem occurred,
only a numeric code was generated, requiring the technician to refer to aphone-book-sized technical manual. Not anymore.
The trouble code identifies the
circuit or component where the fault
occurred, the type of fault, the com-puter connected to the component, wire color and number, connectors, and number of occurrences. There's
even a reference to the correspondingsection in the technical manual, but it's
rarely needed because of the thoroughdiagnostic information displayed rightin the monitor.
"Customers love onboard diagnos-tics because, when they call the dealerwith a problem, they can describe it
so the technician knows what is wrongbefore he even comes out," says BillLoch, instructor, John Deere. "He can
bring the right tools and parts withhim on the first call without having todiagnose it and then go back for thepart. The machine is up and runninga lot quicker."
Otheradvantages
Once repairs have been made, systemcalibrations can be performed using themonitor. On the J- and K-SeriesLoaders,
for example, you can recalibrate the
transmission by performing a simple100minuteprocedure. On competitorequipment, a technician must connectto the machine with a laptop and cableto perform a similar task.
Onboard diagnostics can also pro-tect the machine from catastrophic fail-
ures. When the engine coolant reachesextremely high temperatures, warninglights and messaging on the monitoralert the operator to the situation, sav-ing the engine from major repairs. .
Troubleshooting made easy
Check the calibration values of thescale, hydraulic boom pressuresensors, and boom position sensor.
Verify all four "zones of detection" ofthe radar object-detection system.
The system is also "quadlingual" withavailable translations to Spanish, French, and Russian.

THEFILTRATIONSTATIONAfour-partseriesonbypassfilters
PartThree:EngineBypassSystemsBypass filtration provides an additionalfilter unit that works in conjunction
with your machine's engine system. Itremoves contaminants, extends com-
ponent life and fluid-drain intervals, and gives you more uptime. And less
time spent on service means improvedproductivity and higher profits.
Bypass filter systems draw a smallflow of oil from your engine, filters it toextreme levels, and returns it clean to
the reservoir. Because it's only takinga small amount of flowat a time, the
bypass system isn't affected by fluc-tuations in flowor pressure like main-stream filters. It's a steady performer.
In the engine system, the bypassfilter is made of one-millimetercotton
fiber strands that remove particlessmaller than one micron. Anevaporationchamber at the bottom removes harmful
liquid and gaseous contaminants.
PAGE 10 /11
The bypass system also contains apremeasured time-release package thatreplaces base additives. Breakdown of
these physical properties is the mainreason that engine oil loses its effective-ness. So replacing the additives extendsthe useful life of the oil and keeps your
system protected. After performing allthese duties, the system returns a con-stant stream of well-filtered oil.
Particulate removal and oil-additive
replacement in the same package -that's a win-winsituation for you and
your engine.Callus for details on how bypass
filtration can help cut component wearand lengthen lubricant life.

When you're build;ng a newbusiness 100miles from nowhere, you
look at things differently.EnerCrest isa fast-growingoil-fieldservices outfitheadquartered in BigPiney,Wyoming
(which is not "nowhere," but you cansee it from there) that is taking an inno-
vative approach to customer service.Todd Erickson, EnerCrest's Chief
Development Officer, calls the firm'sapproach an "integrated solution" that
gives customers a single point of con-tact and accountability. With a division
specializing in every required oil-fieldservice, customers need to remember
just one name - EnerCrest.Thereareno subcontractors, no costly generalcontractors, no engineering firms;EnerCrest has the talent and theresources to do it all.
Enercrest has all the "yellowiron"
needed to be a turnkey oil-fieldopera-tion. From aggregate production to
ready-mix to pipeline/station construc-tion to environment restoration - they
do it all.
As Kent Field,EnerCrest equipment
manager, chats about brands of equip-ment, he stresses the importance of
uptime, reliability, operating efficiency, and dealer service. He notes a special
relationship with BillTanner, Ener-Crest's John Deere sales rep. "We're
relying more on John Deere construc-tion equipment. Plus our Deere dealer,Honnen Equipment, has a real 'can-do'attitude that sets it apart.
> >>
"
,.
"Our location here is very remote.
We're miles away from Honnen or anyother manufacturer's dealership, butwe get Deere parts overnight or sooner. And they also have a mobile technician
and service truck right here in town.Differentdivisions of our company arein daily contact with Honnen, and no
one here has anything but good things
to say about the way we're treated,"Field explains.
Todd Erickson has a philosophyon equipment acquisition that wouldmake an accountant smile. He talks a
lot about base-load utilization, cost of
capital, and return on investment, and
Clockwise, from below: Todd Erickson,EnerCrest's Chief Development Officer, callsthe firm's approach an "integrated solution"that gives customers a single point ofcontact and accountability. makes fact-based decisions by looking
at how many hours he expects will beput on the equipment and what futurejobs are in the pipeline. "Ifwe know
we'll put at least 2,000hours a year on
a machine, we'll probably buy it." Healso has tough standards for dealers."IfI call them on Thursday and tellthem I need a certain piece of equip-ment on Monday and they can't comethrough, they're probably not thedealer for us."
EnerCrest's Lead Estimator Brandon
Stephens mentions another value-added factor John Deere brings tothe table. "BillTanner helps keep us
up-to-date on new technology and is anadvisor on fleet-utilization issues. Some-
times new equipment isn't the onlysolution. There may be new ways to dothings with the equipment already inour spread. Or there may be more effi-
cient ways to do a particular job withtwo smaller pieces of equipment.
"I look at Billas more of a partner.
He helps keep us focused, informed, and up-to-date," Stephens says.
Aneyetowardthefuture.While EnerCrest implements its "inte-
grated-solutions" philosophy to providecost-efficient solutions to its customers,it also looks for new businesses where
their philosophy can help customers
grow successfully. "Rightnow we arelooking at wind," says Erickson. "Wyo-ming has the steady winds that make
electric generation efficient. It's goingto take more infrastructure to
get it to where the people are."Here's hoping Enercrest and their
fleet of John Deere equipment will be apart of that vision for growth. .
