INTRODUCTION

Whenever a lighting installation is planned people connected with it will invariably say that there should be

good lighting. What is good lighting? The meaning of good lighting varies from person to person

industry to industry and varies among the other facilities also

Good lighting means there should be adequate illumination for the worker to carry out his task without

any strain or effort; it should ensure safety of the people who perform the task or move about in the

premises; and helps to create a better visual atmosphere and pleasant visual environment .The emphasis of

lighting given to the performance of task and creation of appropriate visual environment will depend on the

nature of interior and type of task carried out

The lighting considered suitable for inspection of small components in tool room and inspection of

garments will place more emphasis on task and whereas in a hotel reception or in a special display

show rooms it is reversed. Lighting for safety ensures making any hazards or obstacles visible Different

LIGHTING LEVEL, THE ILLUMINATION

When planning a lighting installation the first question to be asked is what lighting levels are required

Lighting level means illumination received on the specified surface and luminance of the environment

which includes surface of the interior and objects.In practice the lighting level for a specified activity is

usually described as the illuminance produced on a working plane usually horizontal working plane It

would be medically justifiable to base the recommendation for the required levels of illumination on the

biological characteristics of the eye.

A rough idea of lighting levels to understand can be given with examples like illuminance in outdoors which

may range from as low as 0.25 Lux of moon light in which human perception is just possible to as high as 100000

Lux in the middle of the summer in open Compared with these very high day light levels, the levels under

artificial lighting accepted as satisfactory are very low. For road lighting it is 5 to 30 Lux, for reading 200 Lux, for

working a maximum of 2000 Lux For information, with correct combination of both vertical and horizontal

illumination ( semi cylindrical illuminance ) just 1 Lux is required for facial recognition at a 5m distance.

LIGHTING AND VISIBILITY

The effect of lighting on the task performance depends on the size of the critical details of the task and their

contrast with the back ground and the speed at which these details have to be noticed. The quality of recognition it

demands and duration of the work it occupies have greater importance. The age of the average sight of the workers

have to be taken into account. For example if a man of 40 years requires an illumination of 300 Lux for reading a

good print; a child of 10 years need only 100 Lux a man of 50 year needs 600 Lux and a man of 60 year needs as much

as 1500 Lux. It is important that lighting installations should bear in mind age of the staff. For older people of 50

yeas of age, mostly serious and good workers the lighting level has to be augmented As for the lighting level

is concerned, the lighting level (the illuminance required in a given situation ) is specified in terms of Lux values in

CIE No 29/2 and UK CIBSE Code and USA IESNA Hand book. Our national institutions like BIS (Bureau of Indian

Standards) have recommended the values for different tasks in IS 3646 Part 1 1992 (Code of Practice for Interior

illumination )

There are three different levels of lighting that can be established

the minimum for non working interiors

the minimum for working interiors

the preferred range for working interiors

MINIMUM FOR NON WORKING INTERIORS

To visualize the features of the human face we need approximately 1cd/m2 luminance, we can achieve this

lighting level with horizontal illuminance of approximately 20 Lux, which is regarded as minimum for working

interiors.

MINIMUM FOR WORKING INTERIOR

The perception of the features of the human face is judged as being acceptable (meaning that these features

a be satisfactorily recognized without any special effort) at a luminance of 10- 20 cd/ m2 providing there is a

controlled background luminance. This means that a vertical illuminance on the face of at least 100 Lux and a

horizontal illuminance of about twice this is required. A horizontal illuminance of 200 Lux should there fore be

regarded as the minimum that is acceptable for rooms where people stay for long periods, irrespective of the

visual requirement.

PREFERRED RANGE FOR WORKING INTERIORS

Many investigations have been carried out in order to establish a preferred range of horizontal illuminance for

working interiors having average values of room surface reflectance. It has been found that a maximum of 2000

Lux being accepted as preferred range for maximum visual satisfaction. This together with cost and energy

considerations the following scale of illuminance is recommended.

20-30-50-75-100-150-200-300-500--750-1000-1500-2000 Lux

It can be seen that the above illumination value increase by a factor of approximately 1.5, this being the

smallest increment needed to give a significant difference in the subjective effect of lighting effect National

standard institution BIS - Bureau of Indian Standards have recommended illuminance values for different tasks

in IS 3636 ( Part 1) : 1992 ( Code of Practice for Interior Illumination ) . It is based on three value recommendations,

for example

Clothing- Manufacture- Sewing : 750 -1000-1500 Lux

It takes into account the following information on lighting tasks

the visual display ( details to be seen)

the age of the observer

the importance of speed and / or accuracy for visual performance

the reflectance of the task ( background on which details are seen)

For working interiors the middle value of each range represents the recommended service illuminace that

should be used unless one or more of the factors mentioned below apply

The higher value of range should be used when

unusually low reflectance or contrasts are present in the task

errors are costly to rectify

visual work is critical

accuracy or higher productivity is of greater importance

the visual capacity of the worker makes it necessary

The lower value of range may be used when

reflectance or contrasts are present in the task

speed or accuracy are not important

the task is executed only occasionally

UNIFORMITY

Uniformity of lighting is considered over two areas (1) on and around the task itself and (2 ) over the whole

interior. For the task area and its immediate surroundings uniformity of illuminance is important. The ratio

of the minimum illuminance to the average illuminance over the task area (E min / E av ) should not be less

than 0.8

The illuminance on areas adjacent to the task area should not be less than one-third of the task illuminance

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF LIGHT

Spatial distribution of light is determined by the location of light sources and the light distribution. The

luminance recommendation applicable to indoor lighting can be implemented in a number of ways. The light

sources can be spread fairly even using a system of so called general lighting. It can be concentrated in certain

areas using localized lighting or it can be distributed throughout the space but with local accent where

needed using a combination of the two systems

The way the luminaries distribute the light is also very important. A narrow beam light can be chosen to high

light a specific detail, a wide beam light to light up large surfaces. In a limited space with reflecting surfaces

all around, as in an interior the luminous flux can be directed mainly downwards to produce direct lighting

Directional lighting is characterized by strong shadows and high contrasts. Diffuse light is characterized by

soft shadows .In practice directional and diffuse lighting go hand in hand. For most applications lighting must

be tolerably diffuse with directional lighting as a complementary source. The direction of incidence of light is

important since wrong directional incidence can cause either direct or indirect glare on the object of the

vision.

GLARE

Glare occurs whenever one part of the interior is much brighter than the general brightness in the interior.

Direct glare can be caused by bright light source appearing in the normal field of view of an observer.

Reflected glare will result if the observer sees the reflection of such a source in glossy surface. Direct glare

may take either of the two forms – disability glare and discomfort glare. Glare that impairs the vision is

known as disability glare. It can be measured in terms of deterioration of the visual performance ie of

contrast sensitivity Glare that induces a feeling of discomfort is termed as discomfort glare; the degree of

discomfort can be only assessed subjectively

In combating glare, screening of the light source must be ensured. Together with suitable screening the

mounting height can also help in preventing glare. The disturbing reflection on a shiny top of a writing desk

can be removed by the use of matt or half matt materials

COLOUR APPEARANCE AND COLOUR RENDERING

The colour qualities of a lamp are characterized by two different attributes

Its colour appearance which may be indicated by correlated colour temperature ( CCT)

Colour rendering capabilities which affect colour appearance of the objects illuminated by the

lamp. Colour rendition is indicated by Colour Rendering Index ( Ra )

The lamp which has CCT ≥ 5300 K has cool bluish white appearance , between 3300- 5300 K intermediate

white and ≤3300 K warm reddish white

For practical application five colour rendering groups have been proposed by CIE. They are 1A, 1B, 2,3 and 4.

Preferred application varies from colour matching to rough industries where colour rendering qualities are of

no importance.

CONCLUSION

To work out interior lighting design the above parameters are necessary. For out door lighting design also the

lighting level specified in the schedule value of illumination can be taken into account.

Why LED Street Lights are preferable compared to other lightings

The purpose of any area lighting or street lighting is to illuminate the streets or areas in appropriate way

so that persons using that area can adequately perceive the area ensuring safety from accidents.

Light is perceived by the retina of human eye. It comprises of cones and rods. The cone cells work in

brighter light and register colour while the rods work in dim light and register presence of light.

Our vision is classified as Photopic vision, Scotopic Vision and Mesopic vision. Photopic vision function

in day light condition and received by the cones of the eye.

Scotopic vision relates to dark situations and dim light. Rods are responsible for Scotopic vision. Mesopic

vision lies somewhere between night vision and day vision. Both rods and cones are responsible for this

vision.

Traditional methods of using Photopic lumens to describe light intensity in dim areas grossly under

estimates the light intensity as it totally ignores the contribution of rods cells to the vision or Scotopic

lumens.

Since Mesopic vision functions in both rods and cones a ratio of Scotopic and Photopic lumens is

necessary to arrive the correct brightness of light source. The S/P ratio helps to convert traditional

lumens into actual perceived by the eye under Mesopic light conditions and gives a more accurate

estimate of the amount of light
