December Key Dates

Dear Parents and Friends,

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite meditations. Way too often, I get bogged down by negativity and angst. Yet, trusting in our Lord, prayers of thanksgiv-ing and seeing the world around me in a positive and hopeful light helps keep the negative thoughts at bay. So, for what am I thanking God?

- Harvest. Growing up on a farm, I love this time of year. There is something super special about farmers reaping the fruits of their labors.

- Family. I am so blessed to be the youngest of ten children. I have 37 nieces and nephews, 61 great nieces and nephews, and one great nephew. My parents were good, salt of the earth, faithful people.

- Mentors. God has blessed me with mentors/friends that have made all the difference in the world.

- Students. Our students are gems, and I am edified daily by who they are and how they strive to be authentic, Christ-centered stewards of God’s gifts.

- Teachers and staff. Our faculty and staff love our students and families. They want what is best for them and give of themselves selflessly.

- Families. Our families are the Pius X family for which I am so grateful.

- Pastors, Parishioners, Alumni. The cost per pupil at Pius X is just shy of $6,000. Tuition and fee income accounts for 33% of the cost. The rest of that cost is made up from parish support (37%) and Pius X Foundation support, direct donations, and fundraising efforts (28%). We could not have such affordable tuition, nor such an excellent school, without the generous stewardship of so many!

- Founders and Grandparents. On September 28th we celebrated the annual Founders’/ Grandpar-ents’ day Mass. It was a great celebration of Pius’ 61 years of providing Catholic education. Monsignor Ivan Vap, superintendent of Pius X from 1964 – 1981 and the only living member of the original facul-ty, con-celebrated the Mass and was able to share brunch with many former students and parents.

- Expansion. We also announced that the new classroom addition will be named the Monsignor James D. Dawson Learning Center. Monsignor Dawson was the Diocesan Superintendent of Schools for 29 years, founded the Villa Marie Home and School for Exceptional Children, was principal of Pius X for two years, and Superintendent of Pius X for one year. He was also present at the Mass and able to receive the recognition. Construction for the new $5.5 million classroom addition is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2018 with completion by the start of school in August of 2019.

Lord Jesus, I thank you and praise you and adore you. Help me to never forget how blessed I am and to always give thanks and praise to you.

With much to be grateful to God for,Father Meysenburg

Daily Studying Tips n Do your homework. n Talk to your teacher. Ask questions during class or meet with your teacher before or after school if you need additional assistance. n Teach someone else (this will help you realize what information you really don't understand). n If you are absent, take the time to learn what you missed. Check in with your teacher upon your return to class.

Questions to ask yourselfn Have you reviewed your notes/what you learned in class today? Can you summa-rize what you learned? If not, use your thinking maps and summarize. Preparation for tests and quizzes begins after the first day of class. n Do you understand? Can you answer the objectives the teacher provided? n Can you use the term in a sentence and explain the importance? n Do you really understand, or are you just regurgitating what the teacher said? n Questioning: Did you ask clarifying questions? What questions do you have for the teacher the next day? Make note of them and get them answered.

1. College admissions and employers do read your online profiles and they do make decisions based upon information they find out about you online. In fact, colleges will make decisions based upon many forms of questionable involvement.

2. Educators and parents do see, read, and hear about your online escapades, even though you go to great lengths to hide them.

3. Educate yourself on the basics. What does Digital Citizenship mean to you? What should it mean? These are important lessons that students can research on their own. However, wouldn’t it be fantastic to offer some of this education in our schools as well?

4. Create a profile that says simple, non-specific details about yourself, but that is still identifiably you.

5. Create separate accounts so you can consistently remain pos-itive in public online spaces. If you have already developed a full identity online, you don’t necessarily need to “scrub it clean”, but it would make sense to create a professional identity, and limit the

amount of personal information you share publicly.

6. Learn from others. Find teenagers, professionals, or reputation resources who are doing things the right way and model your online presence in a similar manner.

7. Keep private information private.

8. The Golden Rule. Never has this rule applied more than to how you speak to others online. Treat others as you would like to be treat-ed.

9. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake, but be mindful that being careless, too open, too trusting, and realize spending too much time on the Internet, has real consequences.

10. Build your own positive image and brand yourself in a great way. n Source: Information from http://www.teachhub.com/10-things-your-students-should-know-about-their-digital-footprints

Celebrate the 33nd year of BOLT with Cham-pagne & Bubbles 2018. It is going to be the party of the year and you won’t want to miss anything! BOLT has become larger and more successful each year, providing over $5 million dollars of improve-ments to Pius X High School over the past 32 years. Our super auctioneer has a few things up his sleeve for more fun (an exciting Super Silent part to our online auction that anyone can participate in). We know not everyone can attend, but ALL can bid online. Please help in any way that you can: attend the event, buy a lottery ticket, sell lottery tickets, donate to the auctions, and/or make a cash donation. Donations of timeshares, airfare, items for the auctions, and cash to underwrite auction items are needed, as well as volunteers who are willing to share their time and talents to make BOLT 2018 a suc-cess. Please prayerfully consider supporting this event. One-third of the proceeds fund the Booster Club’s special projects while two-thirds of the proceeds will help to furnish our new classroom project that will be started this next year. Your in-volvement is important and greatly appreciated. Learn more about the classroom project, now formally called the Monsignor James D. Dawson Learning Center, at www.piusx.net/classroomproject. For questions about B.O.L.T., contact Deb Schulte at [email protected] or (402) 488-0931.

Be sure to bring your cell phones and take your own, or we will have a photographer available to post the photos on our Alum-ni /High School Facebook photo gallery to download at home! Have fun decorating your own sugar cookie, coloring a St. Nick page to take home with you, and listening/singing to beautiful Christmas Carols! Come and show your kids your ale mater, their future high school, or where their big brother or sister attend school each day, and make some new family memories! There will be no charge, but free will donations will be accepted.
