PYSO CONCERT TOUR OF ITALY – 2011


“PYSO days were magical times for me. I have Mrs. Maazel to thank for having the insight to assure me, a 15-year old…to play bass in the PYSO, that I ‘will grow into this.’ She was right, and it turned into a life-long avocation that has given me friendships, opportunities and much pleasure.”

“[We] first met on PYSO’s tour of Austria & Switzerland in 1977. After 29 years of marriage, we still talk about this tour as one of the most profound experiences of our lives…The most memorable part of the tour came after a mistake-ridden performance of Dvorak’s 8th (symphony) at a 15th Century Cathedral…Three weeks of touring had started to take its toll on the orchestra. After this performance, we were ready to pack up and go home. We couldn’t understand why Maestro Michalak called a rehearsal on the day before we were to go home. As 100 grumbling young musicians entered the rehearsal room, there sat Dvorak’s 8th Symphony on everyone’s stand. The Maestro took the podium and told us that he couldn’t let us go home with the memory of that lousy performance. In that moment, we learned that in his stern perfectionistic nature was a man who saw the potential of our orchestra and who cared about all of us.”

“My favorite memory of PYSO is the trip to the National Youth Symphony Orchestra Festival in 2002. Our performance of “Pines of Rome” really brought the crowd to their feet.”

“There were few opportunities to play orchestral music in the 1940s, especially for small town children…The youth symphony was a bit overwhelming and an awesome experience.”

“The wonderful experiences shared and friendships established. The European Tour 1972 to the Lausanne Music Festival in Switzerland. The wonderful dinner and reception given by the Maazel’s and the Heinz Family at the Chateau on Lake Geneva, where every table was adorned with a bottle of Heinz ketchup and mustard.”

“Looking through old programs recently, I came across a program from the First American Festival of Youth Orchestras which the PYSO attended in Washington, D.C. in 1977. My husband…who is a member of the PSO horn section said, ‘Hey, I played in that.’ Sure enough, our names are both in the program, his with the D.C. Youth Orchestra.”
