Dunchideock with its picturesque, historic church is within easy access of numerous woodlandwalks in the popular Haldon Forest. The nearby villages of Kenn and Ide provide a selection of local facilitiesincluding post office / village shop, off licence, primary school, pubs and restaurants.Exeter has railway stations on the London and Waterloo lines plus an international airport with daily flights toLondon.

Historical noteThe property is Listed Grade II. The Listed Buildings notes state that it probably dates from the 18th Century, having origins as a threshing barn. However, interestingly the barn has a fine 15th Century fireplace and 17th Centurystone mullion windows.

It was in 1690 that John Pitman moved from Dunchideock Manor near the church and set about gentrifying andimproving a farm on the south facing side of the river Kenn.

One of the improvements he added was a threshing barn, built of cob with a thatched roof and with pairs ofdouble doors on both sides. It was used continuously for more than a century, until, by 1830, the farm had becomeDunchideock House, the centre of a 4,000 acre estate, and its own barn had become redundant. But rather thanpull it down, the Pitman family converted it into a much-needed community centre for the village. It obviouslyneeded domestication, and to do this it is believed they used the materials from the old Manor, recently damagedby fire. Mullion windows were inserted into the cob walls, and a 15th century fireplace, with its chimney, filled oneof the double door spaces.

For the next hundred years it was used for everything from whist drives to dances, from celebrating national eventsand jubilees to wartime rifle practice and jumble sales. Before the First World War it was fitted out as a theatrewith stage, gallery and theatre lights. Locals remember shows and Christmas parties where huge logs burnt fordays beforehand to warm the building. More recently it was a youth club, “the hotspot”, but then, when the villageschool was converted into the village hall in the 60s, it was used as workshops. That stopped with the currentowner and recently it has been used to care for orphaned lambs, as stabling and for regular barn dances.
