Vapors and GasesEnsure that vapors and gases do not exceed the prescribed limits. If necessary, exhaust vapors and gases and/or provide sufficient ventilation of thework space.

SubstrateThe substrate should be free of dust, grease and moisture. The suitable material, optimum working conditions, and possible pre‐treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing.

Processing TemperatureWhen materials require heating, adherence to the prescribed processingtemperature is imperative to ensure the quality of the application. It may notbe exceeded! Overheating can cause material coking or cracking, resulting inmalfunctioning or unit failure.

Material should always be melted gently. Extended, unnecessary temperature load should be avoided. The temperature should be reduced duringbreaks in work. The temperature in the tank should be attuned to the materialconsumption. Thus it is close to the prescribed processing temperature forhigh material consumption and lower for lower consumption.

When materials are processed cold, take into consideration the shear heatand the ambient temperature; cool if necessary.

P/N 7105256_05 2012 Nordson CorporationLA 300Edition 01/12

Function

The following figure illustrates the basic method of operation of a pistonpump within a complete system.

Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (7). The transport belts (8) conveythe substrates. When the leading edge of a substrate reaches the photo cell(10), the beam of light sent is reflected and the program is started. Thecontroller compiles all the data according to the speed of the productionmachine. The encoder (4) is mechanically connected to the transportequipment via a gear and supplies one pulse per mm. The control unitevaluates all the data and establishes the point at which the liquid adhesiveguns (5) must be activated.

The piston pump (12) is connected to the compressed air supply (1). Itoperates continuously and pumps the liquid adhesive from the adhesivereservoir (11) to the liquid adhesive guns.

A current between 0‐20 mA is supplied from the control unit (3) to theproportional pressure control valve (2). The strength of the current isdependent on the speed of the production machine. The strength of thecurrent determines how far the proportional pressure control valve should beopened and the pressure regulator (9) opens accordingly. The adhesiveflows to the liquid adhesive guns and is applied to the substrate. The length

of the application is defined by the controller’s program.

Operation

Initial Startup

Check that all the connections have been made properly.

1. Remove the plug from the oil filling hole (2, Fig. 7) incl. label.

NOTE: Do not insert plug again later.

2. Fill up fully with oil using the oil bottle supplied (Refer to Oil in the SectionParts):

CAUTION: If the equipment is operated without sufficient lubrication, thepiston rings will become damaged and have to be replaced.

3. Shut off the compressed air supply on the piston pump (12, Fig. 1).

4. Open the piston pump compressed air regulator slightly to supply thesystem with compressed air slowly.

5. Regulate the compressed air on the piston pump so that the adhesivepressure at the pressure regulator inlet is always greater than therequired adhesive pressure at the regulator outlet (working pressure ofthe adhesive).

6. NOTE: Activate (spray) all the liquid adhesive guns connected to thepressure regulator until liquid adhesive flows smoothly and without anyair bubbles.

NOTE: To vent the system more efficiently, remove the nozzles or nozzleplates first of all and replace them, as necessary, later.

7. Position the substrate under the liquid adhesive gun, carry out a testadhesive application and check the adhesive bead. If the bead is too thin, increase the pressure on the piston pump.

CAUTION: Do not exceed the required pressure for feeding the liquid

adhesive. Excessive pressure can change the adhesive’s properties.

8. Check all connections for any leakage, tighten as necessary.

CAUTION: If the piston pump is connected in series with a filter, theadhesive pressure is not fully relieved by simply shutting off the compressedair supply, depending on the filter implemented (with ball valve). Ensure thatthe pressure relief valve of the filter is open in order to relieve the pressure ofthe adhesive. Otherwise, adhesive may escape unexpectedly.
