Pirates, those cruel but memorable sea wolves who once infested the Caribbean, still
live in the present through children's imaginations.
An open anchorage used to be called a road. The British Virgin Islands' 'roads' were an open invitation
to some of the Caribbean's naughtiest, cruellest brethren of the coast - pirates.
As late as 1792, British authorities called Tortola - the main island of the British Virgin Islands
- a pirates' nest. For many years, Tortola was a major base for pirates hell-bent on terrorising
professional sailors and soldiers, attacking treasure ships, and distributing the loot in strict
accordance with the Pirate Code.
Documented history for the islands dates back to the early 18th century, when a Spanish galleon
called Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe buried 55 chests of silver coins after the crew mutinied
aboard the ship. Although most of the treasure has been discovered by Tortola residents and later
by Lieutenant-General of the Leeward Islands, Gilbert Fleming, more pirate treasure is rumoured
to exist today on BVI Norman Island.
This interactive book - built on true love for the BVI - recreates an environment which brings
history, education, and imagination together. We, as a proud sponsor, would like to congratulate
the author Scott Taylor for his creativity and thank him for sharing his passion for the BVI.
While intended to reach the younger generation, we hope this book will give both kids and
parents the desire to follow the routes of the pirates and explore the many islands, which once
used to be a plundering paradise and that today, we call home.
Cabin boy Nash,
is seeking the plunder.
He can't read the map,
so he's starting to wonder.
Can he work out the clues?
Well that all depends.
How much he can trust,
on his new island friends.
With his great booming voice
that sounds like the thunder.
Tom orders his crew
to hide all the plunder.
From the topmost of Sage
to the coves of Trunk Bay.
He seeks out the best spot
to stash it away.
Pour in the powder
then roll down the ball,
get set to light the
fuse wire.
Wait for the Captain
to shout out the words,
READY, AIM, FIRE!
ANSWERS: THE HIBISCUS THAT DOES NOT HAVE A MATCH HAS RED PETALS AND PINK STIGMA. CANNON D IS GOING TO FIRE FIRST
