For the second year in a row, over 100 people came out for the presentation of the Eastern Ontario Champion Supreme Awards (see next page) and to watch the first piping/ drumming solo contests of the new season. As is the tradition of the Ottawa Branch, the first knock-out contest of the season started out with the standard 4/4 March contest for the pipers and drummers. It was another banner night for contestants with 27 pipers signing up to play and nine drummers joining the mix. Thanks to our well organized stewards, the night moved quickly and still wrapped up at a decent hour. Our piping judge, RCMP P/Sgt Gilbert Young (left), did an outstanding job with the large number of piping competitors. A big thanks to Jim Corrigan (right) of the Air Command Pipes and Drums, too, who helped out again with the drumming side of the house. It was another great start to a season. Events

National Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Service

The 30th National Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Service was held on Parliament Hill on Sunday 30 September 2007. Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day opened the Memorial Service by noting that Police officers need to know that Canadians remember their sacrifices and that their government will take every necessary measure to help them do their jobs. “Their deaths must not be in vain. I think that's what the family members are asking today -- simply that we remember," Mr. Day said as officers and family members stood solemnly. The National Peace and Police Officers’ Memorial Service is held every year, providing

an opportunity for families, friends, colleagues and all Canadians to pay tribute to the brave and dedicated men and women who lost their lives while protecting Canadian communities. Among the new names who were added to the honour roll are: Det.-Const. Robert Plunkett of York Regional Police; Const. Daniel Tessier of Laval, Que., police; wildlife protection officer M. Richard Cayouette, of Quebec's ministry of natural resources and wildlife; and OPP Const. David Mounsey. The Service is a lasting tribute to the sacrifice of those brave men and women. "THEY ARE OUR HEROES, WE SHALL NOT FORGET THEM". Their names are forever etched on the glass panels erected along the perimeter wall adjacent to the Memorial Pavilion. Over 300 pipers and drummers from across Canada participated in the Memorial Parade, and were joined by the Ceremonial Band of the Waterloo Regional Police Service. Pipe bands represented this year included the Ottawa Police Service, the Halton Regional Police, the Niagara Regional Police, the Durham Regional Police, the OPP Commissioner’s Own Pipes and Drums, the Greater Sudbury Regional Police, the York Regional Police, the Air Command Pipes and Drums, the Toronto Police, the Peel Regional Police, the NYDOC Emerald Society, the Brockville Police, and the RCMP Pipes and Drums (with representatives from Halifax, Moncton, Montreal, Ottawa, Regina, Edmonton, and Vancouver).

CANADIAN FORCES PIPES AND DRUMS MAKE MUSIC IN RED SQUARE MOSCOW RUSSIA 13-16 SEP 2007

Twenty-five Canadian Forces members were in Moscow, Russia from 07 – 17 Sept 2007 for the first Kremlin Zoria International Tattoo Festival. Russia invited selected military pipes and drums to take part in the first ever military tattoo and festival in Russia. Canada put together a pipe band with top Canadian Forces pipers and drummers from all over Canada. “It's an Air Force Pipe band, but Army and Navy members will join us." said Canadian Forces Senior Pipe Major, Chief Warrant Officer Ian Ferguson. The tattoo included pipe and drums from, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, New

Zealand, and Canada as well as several Russian, German and Danish brass bands. "Russia is trying to open up culturally and militarily to the rest of world; this festival has been approved at the government level by Vladimir Putin," said Pipe Major Ferguson. "Music is the common language we share. Regardless of our culture and military history, we all read music the same way. It's a mutual meeting place, a way to communicate easily. There's really no better way to bring people together than through music. This is a form of bonding between pipe bands and military bands across world." The audience size was over 8,000 every night for the four nights they played on Red Square, September 13th to 16th. After that the 300 pipes and drums members from all countries put on an extensive parade in the streets of Moscow and provided several outdoor concerts. "There was an extremely large amount of Pipe Bands at the event, seventeen in total” said Pipe Major Ferguson, who led the CF Pipes and Drums. "Normally, there are eight or nine but Russia wants this to be grandiose. Red Square is quite large and the Russians have a great fondness for pipe bands. It's going to take a lot of concentrated effort with seventeen pipe bands along with at least five or six brass bands to put a show this big together in only a few days.” The challenge was the first few days when the bands had to coordinate themselves into one big military pageant. Not only have the bands from different countries not played together before but the band members from the CF came from all across Canada and are meeting together for the first time as well. Initially the music was simply sent out to the individuals to learn on their own. "It was stimulating and rewarding for all twenty five members, but most of all it was an honour." All the pipers and drummers enjoyed themselves and would be more than happy to return at a later date to once again represent Canada and the CF.

Funeral Held in Ottawa for RCMP Constable C. Worden, 15 October 2007

A regimental funeral for RCMP Constable Christopher Worden, who was killed in the line of duty while serving in Hay River, Northwest Territories, was held in the city of Ottawa on 15 October 2007. Cst. Worden was a valued member of his community - a husband, a father, a son, and a fine young peace officer

who served in “G” Division from 2002 - first in Yellowknife, moving on to Whati, and more recently of Hay River. On 06 October Cst. Worden was responding alone to a request for police assistance at a residence in Hay River when shortly afterwards radio contact was lost. Additional members were dispatched and Cst. Worden was located at the scene, the victim of a senseless act of violence. More than 2,500 uniformed police officers, including some on horseback and motorcycle, and a massed police pipe band approximately 90 strong, accompanied Worden's remains in a procession from Parliament Hill to historic Notre Dame Basilica, the capital's oldest surviving church, on nearby Sussex Drive. To a full house at Notre-Dame Cathedral, Cst. Mike Carter, Worden's friend and colleague, gave a eulogy on behalf of the RCMP during which he described Worden's passion for his work, life and family. Worden leaves behind his wife, Jodie, and eight-month-old daughter, Alexis.

How the Scots Created Canada, by Paul Cowan The Scots left the Highlands and Lowlands in droves to conquer the wilderness and create a thriving nation in Canada. They were the discoverers, fur traders, soldiers, explorers, businessmen, prime ministers, settlers, musicians, artists, inventors, visionaries, and builders that helped shape the new country. Combining research and intriguing speculation, Paul Cowan has woven an entertaining and playful look at the great movement of the Scots to Canada. You’ll meet: mysterious Templar knights led by a Scottish nobleman; pirate Captain Kidd, Canada’s own Sherlock Holmes; the Gaelic speaking outlaw who’s exploits thrilled Quebecers in the late 1800s; the hardy Highlanders who repelled an American invasion, the rival fur traders who waged a bloody war; a Canadian spymaster; Fathers of Confederation; the bold explorers and the Scots who tied a nation together with a ribbon of steel. Copies will be available at future Ottawa Branch knock-out contests.

The Arnprior-McNab Pipe Band is looking for pipers and drummers to join its organization. As well as supplementing the current Grade 3 competition band, there is also interest being expressed in creating a complementary Grade 5 band. Both pipers and drummers would be welcome. For further information please call Pipe Major Bob Smith at 613-432-6272.
