THE PINK DINO EFFECT:STRATEGIC PLAN FOR HÄMEENKATU

Current situation

Hämeenkatu (located in Tampere, Finland), is a traditional downtown street with a large variety of commercial activi-ties. Demand for improving street functionality and comfort is apparent. This design plan seeks to address the issue in a involving and financially viable way and aims to create an overall strategy to help Hämeenkatu reach its full potential.

1. Area division Design area is divided into smaller, easier to manage areas. A design team consisting of stakeholder representatives is formed for each area.

A clear and structured process model ensures ongoing development and realization of designs. Process model needs to remain flexible and feeds back to the mas-terplan. Process goal is to create commitment trough involvement and design trough educating.

Toolbox is a starter pack of ideas for design teams to kick-start their design process. It is designed to showcase the pos-sibilities and contains a selection of large and small scale examples and ideas that incorporate the spirit of sustainable design. A small example is shown here of possible content.

Help for finding right partners is provided for design teams: consultants, lecturers, specialists, preceding cases, contractors, funding, artists etc.

Courses in teamwork, representing an interest group, urban design and construction details are given as necessary to empower design teams into realizing their goals.

A. Business as usual. Play it safe and keep current structure of street and buildings. Improve them separately.

B. Fight them on their terms. Convert hämeenkatu into an indoor shopping mall.

C. Reinvent the rules. Play on the strengths of hämeenkatu to create something unique.
