TheSpark2isaPPGwingdesignedspecificallyforschoolsandbeginnerpilots.BasedontheElement3,theSpark2isanincrediblyeasyandforgivingwingidealforall levelsofstudenttraining.TheSpark2featurestechnologiestakenfromourhigherperformancemodelsbutimplementedintoaconceptfocusedverymuchtowards,safety,forgivenessandexcellentinflationbehaviour.Thenewprofile,linelayoutandinternalstructureimprovestheefficiencyandpassivesafetywhilstretainingtheforgivingnaturerequiredforaschoolwing.Theplanformretainsamoderatedaspectratiowhichhasproventobeagoodcompromiseforcomfort,easeofuseandfunwhilstmaintainingexceptionalsafetycharacteristics.

Particularattentionhasbeenmade to the inflationbehaviourandground-handlingcharacteristics tomakepoweredlaunchesaseasyastheycanbe.Innil-windconditions,theinflationisincrediblyeasy,theSpark2inflateswiththelightestofforwardpressure,yettheleadingedgeremainsstrongandopenevenwhenforcedbyheavyinputs.Inthelightestofwinds,theSpark2restsoverheadandforgivesmisguidedinputs,thisqualitymakesgroundhandlingbothfunandsafe.

Intheair,theSpark2issimpletofly.Itisdampedinbothrollandpitch,withaprogressivefeelinthebrakesforcontrolledandcoordinatedturns.Theoverallbrakerangeislong,withaveryslowstallspeed,makingitverydifficultforstudentstoinadvertentlystallorspinthewing.Whilsttheitisincrediblyforgiving,theSpark2isalsoenjoyabletofly,tightandcompactintheair,beginnerswillfinditintuitivetoflywhilstinstructorswillappreciatehandlingthatisagileandprecise.Theexcellentsinkrateperformanceallowsforquicktakeoffsandefficientfuelconsumption.

TheSpark2isavailablein3sizes,coveringawideweightrangeofpilotweights.TheoveralleaseofuseanduncompromisingsafetycombinetomaketheSpark2thefavouredworkhorseforinstructorsandschools.

TheSpark2hasbeendesignedwith3risersperside.Theyaresimpleandunclutteredwithaneffectivetrimmerandshort-rangeacceleratorsystemofferingsufficientspeedandsolidity.TheArisersarecoveredwithcolouredwebbingallowingforeasyidentificationandsplitintotwo;thesmallerriser-holdingonlytheoutermostAlinemakesapplyingbigearssimple.

ForeasyhighspeedcruisingtheSpark2isdeliveredwithtrimrisersasstandard.Itsharesthesametopspeedas theElement3,splitting theaccelerationbetween the trimmersand the footoperatedspeedsystem.Becauseofthis,asdeliveredthewingdoesnotconformtotheEN926.2standard.FullycertifiedElement3risersareavailablefortheSpark2.Pleaseconsultwithyourdealer.

TrimmersTherisersfeaturetrimmersforcomfortablefastcruisingwhilstunderpower.Thestandardsettingiswiththetrimmerspulledallthewaydowntotheslowestposition.ThewinghasbeenENflighttestedwiththetrimmerssetintheslowpositionandwiththeuseofthefootoperatedspeedsystem.FlyingoutsideofthecertifiedweightrangeorreleasingthetrimmersinvalidatesanyENflightcertification.ThetrimmerscanbelockedtothecarabinerinthestandardpositionusingtheDring,butdoingsowillrestrictthemaximumtopspeedofthewing.

Thestandardtrimsettingisrecommendedfortakeoff,landing,climbingunderpower,whilstthermallingorfreeflyingandwhentheair isturbulent.Brakepressureislighterandthehandlingatitsbestatthestandardtrimsetting.

Toincreasecruisespeedyoucanusetheacceleratorsystem,releasethetrimmers,ordoboth-butonlydosowhentheconditionsaresuitable.

Inturbulentairtheprofileisstable,itwillresistreasonablelevelsofturbulencewithahighresistancetocollapsewithoutpilot input.However inturbulentairOzonerecommendstoreturnthetrimmerstothestandardposition(pulleddown)andtoflytheglideractively.Thisway,youwillbeinthebestpositiontoreactcorrectlyshouldanincidentoccur.

NOTE: The standard or neutral position of the risers is when the trimmers are pulled down to the slowest position. In this position the maillons on the risers are level.

IMPORTANTThis wing has passed the criteria required by the DGAC and has been load tested to the EN 926.1 standard. In addition to our own extensive testing, it has also been independently flight tested to the EN 926.2 standard with the trimmers set to the slow position. Releasing the trimmers, or flying outside of the EN certified weight range invalidates any EN flight certification.

Speed SystemThe risers featurea footoperatedacceleratorsystemforhighspeedcruising.Thespeedsystemactsdifferentlythanreleasingthetrimmers,buteithercanbeusedinanycombinationtoacceleratethewing.Becareful,fullyacceleratedwiththetrimmersreleasedisfastandshouldonlybeusedincalmconditionsandwithsufficientaltitude.

Brake LinesThebrakelinelengthshavebeensetcarefullyduringtesting.Wefeelitisbettertohaveslightlylongbrakelinesandtoflywithawrap(oneturnoflinearoundthehand).However,ifyoudochoosetoadjusttheirlengthpleasekeepinmindthefollowing:

•Ensurebothmainbrakelinesareofequallength.

• Ifabrakehandlehasbeenremoved,checkthatitslineisroutedthroughthepulleywhenitisreplaced.

•Whenthebrakesarefullyreleasedinflight,thebrakelinesshouldbeslack.Theremustbeasubstantialbowinthemtoguaranteenodeformationofthetrailingedgewhenaccelerated.

•Theremustbeaminimumof10cmoffreeplaybeforethebrakesbegintodeformthetrailingedge.Thispreventsthetrailingedgefrombeingdeformedwhenusingthespeedsystem.

Adjustable brake handle heightTheheightofthebrakehandlescanbeadjustedaccordingtopilotpreferencetosuitethepowerunit’shangpointsheightbyusingtheappropriatepulley.Thereare2pulleysettings:upperandlower.Theuppersetting(assetbythefactory)isforlowhangpointmotorswhilstthelowersettingisforunitswithhigherhangpoints.

Ifyoulowerthebrakehandle,youmustalsolengthenthebrakelinesaccordingly.Movingthebrakehandlestothelowerpulleyrequiresadding17cmtotheoverallbrakelinelength-usetheappropriatemarkonthebrakelines.

• Firstundothebrakehandle’sknotandremovethebrakelinefromtheupperpulley.• Re-routethebrakelinethroughthelowerpulley• Re-attachthebrakehandlewithanappropriateknotatthecorrectlengthusingthesecondmark.

IMPORTANTIn the unlikely event of a brake line snapping in flight, or a handle becoming detached, the glider can be flown by gently pulling the rear risers for directional control.

IMPORTANTIf you adjust the brake handle height, you MUST re-lengthen the brake lines accordingly.

IMPORTANTUsing the accelerator or releasing the trimmers decreases the angle of attack and makes the wing more prone to collapse, therefore accelerating the wing near to the ground or in turbulent conditions should be avoided.

Pilot SuitabilityTheSpark2hasbeendesignedasasolobeginner/intermediatelevelwing.Duetoit’sforgivingnatureitisalsosuitableforalllevelsoftraining.Itisnotintendedfortandemflightsnoraerobaticmanoeuvres.

Choosing Your Wing SizeThemostsuitablesizewingforyoudependsonhowyouintendtouseit.Ifyouwillbeflyingsolelywithamotor,aimforthemiddleofthePPGweightrange(allupweightwithwing,motor,fueletc).Howeverifyouintendtoalsofreeflywiththewing,consideryourallupfreeflyingweightandaimtobenearthetopofthePGweightrange.NeverflyabovetherecommendedmaximumPPGweight.

Wing Loading and Flight CharacteristicsWingloadinghasasignificanteffectontheflightcharacteristicsandbehaviorofthewing.Heavilyloaded,theSpark2ismoreresponsivetopilotinputsandreactsmoredynamicallyinturnswithagreaterlossofheight.Recoveryfromcollapsestendtobemoreimpulsiveandwithhigherpitchangles.Highloadingalsomakes thewingmore likely to remain neutral in a spiral dive, especiallywhen combinedwith ahighhangpointortrikepowerunit.Flyingatthemaximumrecommendedloadisonlysuitableformoreexperiencedpilotswhohavethenecessaryskillstocontrolamoredynamicwing.HighGrapiddescentmanoeuvresshouldbeavoidedwhenflyingabovethemaximumrecommendedENweightorwhenflyingwithatrikeorhighhangpointharness.WeadviseyoutoaimfornearthetopoftherecommendedENweightrangeforfreeflyingandtoneverflyaboveOzone’srecommendedPPGweightrangewhilstunderpower.

IMPORTANTThe Spark 2 is certified EN A with the accelerator, but with the trimmers set to the slow position. Releasing the trimmers, or flying outside of the certified weight range invalidates EN flight certification.

Load test and wing loading information for PPG wingsToverify thestructuralstrengthofaparagliderorparamotorwing, the largersizesofeachmodelaresubjectedtotheEN926.1loadtest.Thistestiscomprisedoftwoparts;astaticshocktest,andasustainedloadtest.First,usingat leasta1000kgweak link (higher for tandems)thewingmustsurviveabrutalstaticshocktestwithoutanyvisiblesignsofdamagetothelinesorsail.Thesamewingthenperformsasustainedloadtest, inflatedandpulledalongarunwaybyalargetruckuntilathreesecondaveragevalueof8Gisachievedwithoutbreaking.8GistheminimumacceptedloadfactorforENcertification,calculatedby8xthemaximumpermittedENweight.

InadditiontoEN926.1ourparamotorwingsarealsorecognisedbytheDGAC,anentity responsibleforMicrolight (ULM)and lightweightpoweredaircraft (Paramotor)certification inFrance.Using theENloadtestresults,theDGACaccepts5.25Gasthemaximumacceptableloadfactor.Boththe8GENand5.25GDGACvalues,alongwiththerecommendedPG(freeflight)andPPG(powered)weightrangesareindicatedinthespecificationsforyourreference.WeconsidertheDGACloadfactor limitof5.25Gacceptablefor“normal”PPGuse-circuitflying,XC,adventure flying, Slalom racing,wing overs etc. Some rapid descentmaneuvers fit into the “normal”definition:spiraldiveswithdescentratesof~10m/sareconsideredgenerallysafe.

However,inourtestingatOzonewehaverecordedloadsofupto5.25Gduringfullyengaged,nose-downspiraldives,atallpartsoftheweightrange.Theoretically,itshouldnotbepossibletobreakawingwhilstflyingatthemaximumPPGweightofthelargersizes(smallerwingsizeshaveaninherentsafetymarginduetothefactthatthesamenumber&typeoflinescarryalowermaxweight),butwhenyouconsider:

a)thenaturalweakeningoflineswithage;b)thepotentialofaccidentallydamagedlinesduringnormaluse;c)andthatduringaspiraldiveorotheraggressiveacrobaticmanoeuvrethe load isnotdistributedasevenlyacrossthespanasitisduringaphysicaltest;

thereissignificantlylessstructuralsafetymargininwhenflyingclosetothemaximumDGACweight.Forthisreason,ourrecommendationtoallPPGpilotswhenflyingathighwingloadings(abovethemiddleof the recommendedPPGweight range) is tonotperformdeeplyengagednosedown,high-Gspiralsandotheraggressiveaerobaticmanoeuvres.Doingsoposesarealriskoflinefailurewithpotentiallyfatalconsequences.

IMPORTANTDo not perform high G spiral dives when flying above the maximum EN weight range or when flying with a trike or a high hang point harness

Trike FlyingTheSpark2maybeusedwithalightsolotrikesolongasthemaximumrecommendedweightrangeisrespected.Itisstronglyrecommendedtonotperformdeeplyengaged,highsinkratespiralswhenflyingwithatrike.

TowingTheSpark2maybetow-launched.Itisthepilot’sresponsibilitytousesuitableharnessattachmentsandreleasemechanismsandtoensurethattheyarecorrectlytrainedontheequipmentandsystememployed.Alltowpilotsshouldbequalifiedtotow,useaqualifiedtowoperatorwithproper,certifiedequipment,andmakesurealltowingregulationsareobserved.

Flying in the RainModernwingsaresusceptibletorainandmoisture,flyingwithawetwingcanresultinthelossofnormalflight.Duetotheefficient,wrinkle-freedesignofthesail,watertendstobeadontheleadingedgecausingflowseparation.Flowseparationwillmakethewingmorepronetoenteringinadvertentparachutalstalls,soflyingintherain,orwithawetwing(e.gearlymorningdew)shouldbeavoidedatallcosts.Ifyouareaccidentlycaught-outinarainshower,itisbesttolandimmediately.Ifyourwingbecomeswetintheairitisadvisedtomaintainacceleratedflightusingthespeedbarand/orreleasingthetrimmers,evenduringthefinalapproach.DONOTusebigearsasadescenttechnique,bigearsincreasesdrag,andwithawetwingthiswillfurtherincreasethechancesofaparachutalstalloccurring.Instead,loseheightwithgentle360’sandmaintainyourairspeedatalltimes.Ifyourwingentersparachutalstallwhenwet,immediatelyreleasethetrimmersandacceleratethewingtoregainairspeed.

ModificationsYourOzoneSpark2wasdesignedandtrimmedtogivetheoptimumbalanceofperformance,handlingandsafety.Anymodificationvoidsthecertificationandwillalsomakethewingmoredifficultanddangeroustofly.Forthesereasons,westronglyrecommendthatyoudonotmodifyyourgliderinanyway.

IMPORTANTIt is strongly recommended to not perform deeply engaged, high sink rate spirals when flying with a trike.

IMPORTANTDo not fly your wing when it is wet.

Accelerator SystemTosetuptheacceleratorsystem,firstroutethelinessuppliedwiththespeedsystemthroughtheharness.Makesurethis isdonecorrectlyandthatthe linespassthroughallofthepulleys(checkyourharnessmanualforinstructions).AttachthespeedsystemlinestotheacceleratorsystemontheriserswiththeBrummelhooks.

Abasicset-upcanbeperformedon theground:aska friend topull the risers tight into their in-flightpositionwhilstyousitintheharnessontheground.Nowadjustthelengthsofthelinessothatthemainbarsitsjustbeneathyourseat.Youshouldbeabletohookyourheelintothelowerloopoftheaccelerator.Theremustbeenoughslackinthespeedbartoensurethefrontrisersarenotpulleddowninnormaltrimspeedflight,butnotsolongthatitisimpossibletousethefullspeedrangeoftheglider.Fullyextendingthelowerloopwillacceleratethewingtoapproximatelyhalfitsacceleratedspeedrange.Forfullspeed,hookyourheelsontotheupperbarandsmoothlyextendyourlegs,maximumspeediswhenthepulleysontheriserstouch.Oncesetup,testthefullrangeoftheacceleratorincalmflyingconditionsandensurethatbothrisersarepulledevenlyduringoperation.Fine-tuningcanbecompletedwhenyouarebackontheground.

Harness and MotorItwillbeinyourharnessthatyouwillenjoyflying.Therefore,werecommendyouspendthetimeonthegroundtoadjustyourharness’differentsettings.Hangfromasolidbeamanddoublecheckthatyouarecomfortableandthatyoucanreachthebrakehandlesandthatyoucanachievethefullrangeofspeedbartravelbeforeflying.Donotflywithyourcheststrapsettootight.

TheSpark2issuitableforalltypesofpowerunits,howeverwerecommendusingunitswithlowhangpointsorGoosenecksystems.Usingpowerunitswithhighhangpoints ispossible,but itwillhaveadetrimentaleffectonthebehaviourof thewingespeciallyduringspiraldiveswithan increasedriskofneutrality.UsingaharnessthatdoesnotconformtothedimensionsrequiredoftheENstandardorflyingwithapowerunitwillleadtoachangeintheflightcharacteristics.

There aremany differentmotor units available and it is vitally important that you choose one that issuitableforyourneeds,weightandskilllevel.DuetothehighperformanceprofileoftheSpark2,aunitwithalesspowerfulmotorandlowmovablehangpointsmaybeadvisable.

LaunchingYourSpark2will launchwitheithertheforwardorreversetechnique.Thewingshouldbelaidoutinapronouncedarc,withthecentreofthewinghigherthanthetips.

Forward Launch - Nil to Light windsWhenthewindisfavourable,whilstgentlyholdingtheArisersmoveforwardpositively,yourlinesshouldbecometightwithinoneortwostepsandtheSpark2willimmediatelystarttoinflate.Youshouldmaintainaconstantpressureontherisersuntilthewingisoverhead.Donotpulldownorpushtherisersforwardexcessively,ortheleadingedgewilldeformandpossiblycollapsemakingtaking-offmoredifficultandpotentiallydangerous.

Movesmoothlythroughouttheentirelaunch,thereisnoneedtorushorsnatchatit.Youshouldhaveplentyoftimetolookupandcheckyourcanopybeforecommittingyourself.OnceyouarehappythattheSpark2isinflatedcorrectly,acceleratesmoothlyoffthelaunch.

Reverse Launch - Light to Strong WindsLayoutyourwingasyouwouldfortheforwardlaunch.However,thistimeturntofaceit,passingoneentiresetofrisersoveryourheadasyouturn.NowyoucaninflatethegliderwithyourbodyweightandtheA-risers.Oncethewingisoverhead,releasetherisers,brakegentlyifnecessary,turnandlaunch.

Instrongerwinds,bepreparedtotakeafewstepstowardsthegliderasitinflates.Thiswilltakesomeoftheenergyoutoftheglideranditwillbelesslikelytooverflyyou.Thisreverse-launchtechniquecanbeusedinsurprisinglylightwindstoo.

Practicegroundhandlingasmuchaspossible!Notonlyisitgreatfun,butitwillgiveyouamuchbetterfeelforyourwing’sflightcharacteristics.Itwillalsoimproveyouroverallenjoymentofflyingbygivingyouthefeelingofcontrolandmakingyourlauncheseasierandlessstressful.

The Climb OutOnceintheairyoushouldcontinueflyingintowindwhilstgainingheight.Donotattempttoclimbtoosteeplyortooquicklybyusingthebrakesorslowtrim.Thewingalreadyhasahighangleofattitude,coupledwithahigherAoA (ifyouuse thebrakes)plus theengine’s full thrustactingon thepilot, thiscouldcontributetomaketheglidermorepronetostall.Furthermore,intheeventofanenginefailuretheresultingbackwardpendulummotionofthepilotandtheforwarddiveofthewingmaybringyoubackto

TheSpark2iswelldampedinrollbutundercertaincircumstancesitispossibleforthepilottoinduceoscillations.Thisiscausedbyacombinationoftheengine/propellertorqueandpilotweightshiftand/orbrakeinputs.Tostoposcillationsitisbesttoreducethepowerslightlyandensurethatyouremainstaticwithweightshiftandbrakeinputs.Oncesettledyoucanonceagainapplyfullpower.Underfullpowerthetorqueeffectwillattempttogentlyturnthewing,usingweightshiftoradjustingthetrimsasymmetricallyisthebestmethodtocorrectthis.

Normal FlightOnceatasafeheightyoucanreleasethetrimmersforafastercruisespeed.Ifyourmotorhasenoughpower,theSpark2willachieveverygoodstraight linespeedswhilstmaintaininglevelflightwithtrimsfullyreleasedandfullspeedbarapplied.Becautiouswhenreleasingthetrimmers,onlydosoincalmconditions.

Flyingattrimspeed(hands-up,trimmerspulledtotheslowposition),theSpark2willachieveits‘bestglide’speedforstillair.Youshouldflyatthisspeedwhenglidingdownwindorwhentheairisnotexcessivelysinking.Forbetterpenetrationinheadwindsandimprovedglideperformanceinsinkingair,crosswindsorheadwinds,youshouldflyfasterthantrimspeedbyusingtheacceleratorsystemortrimmers.Usinguptohalfbardoesnotdegradetheglideangleorstabilitysignificantlyandwillimproveyourflyingperformance.AtfullspeedtheSpark2isstable;howeverwerecommendthatyoudonotflyatfullspeedclosetothegroundorinturbulentair.

Bypullingthetrimmerstotheslowpositionandapplyingasmallamountofbrake,theSpark2willachieveitsbestminimum-sinkrate;thisisthespeedtouseforthermallingandridgesoaringwhilstfreeflying.Formaximumefficiencywhilstflyingdownwind,releasethespeedbarandreturnthetrimmerstotheslowposition.

IMPORTANTIn turbulent air return the glider to trim speed - release the speed bar and return the trims to the slow position

IMPORTANTNever apply the brakes whilst flying at full speed - it makes the wing more prone to collapse.

TurningTo familiarize yourself with the Spark 2 your first turns should be gradual and progressive. TomakeefficientandcoordinatedturnswiththeSpark2firstlookinthedirectionyouwanttogo,thenleanintoit.Yourfirstinputfordirectionalchangeshouldbeweight-shift,followedbythesmoothapplicationofthebrakeuntilthedesiredbankangleisachieved.Toregulatethespeedandradiusoftheturn,coordinateyourweightshiftandusetheouterbrake.

Active FlyingTominimizethelikelihoodofsufferingcollapsesinturbulentconditions,itisessentialtouseactiveflying.Theseareskillsthatarebestlearntbyplayingwiththegliderontheground.Flyingwithasmallamountofbrakeapplied(approx.20cm)willallowyoutofeelthefeedbackfromthewing.Inturbulentconditionstheinternalpressureofthewingisconstantlychangingandonlybyusingasmallamountofbrakewillyoufeelthesechanges.Theaimofactiveflyingistomaintainaconstantpressurethroughthebrakes,Ifyoufeelareductionorlossofpressureapplythebrakesuntilyoufeelnormalpressureagain.Onceyouhavenormalpressure,raisethehandsquicklybacktotheoriginalposition.Avoidflyingwithcontinuousamountsofdeepbrakeinroughairasyoucouldinadvertentlystallthewing.Alwaysconsideryourairspeed.

Thesemovementscanbesymmetricorasymmetric;youmayhavetoapplybothbrakesorjustone.Thesesubtleadjustmentswillkeepthegliderflyingsmoothlyanddirectlyaboveyouanddramaticallyreducethechancesofacollapse.Ifthegliderpitchesinfrontofyou,usethebrakestoslowitdown.Equally,ifthegliderdropsbehindyou,releasethebrakestoallowittospeedup.Thegoalistoalwayskeepthewingdirectlyoverhead.

Nopilotandnogliderareimmunetocollapseshoweveractiveflyingwillvirtuallyeliminateanytendencytocollapse.Whentheconditionsareturbulent,bemoreactiveandanticipatethemovementsofyourwing.

IMPORTANTNever initiate a turn at minimum speed (i.e. with full brakes on) as you could risk entering a spin.

LandingTheSpark2showsnounusuallandingcharacteristicsbutasareminder,herearesometips:

•Alwayssetupforyourlandingearly,giveyourselfplentyofoptionsandasafemarginforerror.

•Oncebelow30metresavoidturningtightlyasthegliderwillhavetodivetoacceleratebacktonormalflight. If you are at low altitude, or if you hit sink, this couldmean you hit the ground harder thannecessary.

•Leanforwardoutofyourharnessbeforetheactuallanding(especiallyifit’sturbulent),withyourweightleaningforwardagainstthecheststrap,andmakesureyourlegsarereadyforthelandingandapossiblePLF(parachutelandingfall).

•Allowtheglidertoflyathandsup(trim)speedforyourfinaldescentuntilyouarearound1metreabovetheground(inwindyorturbulentconditionsyoumustflytheglideractivelyalltheway).Applythebrakesslowlyandprogressivelytoslowthegliderdownuntilgroundspeedhasbeenreducedtoaminimumandyouareabletostepontotheground.

• Inlightwinds/zerowindyouneedastrong,longandprogressiveflaretobleedoffallyourexcessgroundspeed.Instrongwindsyourforwardspeedisalreadylowsoyouareflaringonlytosoftenthelanding.Astrongflaremayresultinthegliderclimbingupwardsandbackwardsquickly,leavingyouinavulnerableposition.

• Ifthegliderdoesbegintoclimb,easeoffthebrakes(10-20cm)-donotputyourhandsupalltheway-thenflareagain,butmoregentlythistime.Keepthebrakesatmidspeed,standup,bereadytorunandmakesureyoubrakefullyasyouarriveontheground.

•Choosetheappropriateapproachstyleinfunctionofthelandingareaandtheconditions.

• Instrongwindsyouneedtoturntowardsthegliderthesecondyourfeettouchtheground.Oncefacingthewingpullsmoothlyandsymmetricallydownonthebrakestostallthewing.Ifthegliderpullsyou,runtowardit.

• Ifthewindisverystrong,andyoufeelyoumightbedragged,orliftedagain,stallthegliderwiththeCrisers.Thisstallsthewinginaveryquickandcontrollablewayandwilldragyoulessthanifyouusethebrakes.

•Alwayslandheadingintowind!

Ozonewouldliketoremindyouthatthefollowingmanoeuvresshouldbelearntunderthesupervisionofaqualifiedinstructorandalwaysusedwithcaution.Neverforgetthatproperlyanalysingtheconditionsbeforelaunchwillhelpavoidtheneedtousethesetechniques.

Big EarsFoldinginthewingtipsincreasesthesinkratewithoutradicallychangingtheairspeed.Thisisusefulforstayingoutofcloudordescendingquicklythroughtheliftbandofthehill,forexamplewhentoplanding.

Topullbigears,keepholdofyourbrakehandlesandtaketheoutermostA-lineoneachside,thenpulloutanddown(preferablyoneatatime)untilthewingtipsfoldunder.TheOuterAlineisattachedtotheBabyAriser,makingidentificationanduseofthebigearsystemeasier.Thesizeofthebigearscanbeadjustedbypullingmoreline,orreachinghigheruptheline.FordirectionalcontrolwhileusingtheBigEars,youshoulduseweightshift.Toreopentheears,releasebothAlinesatthesametime.Tohelpreinflation,brakegentlyonesideatatimeuntiltipsregainpressure.Avoiddeepsymmetricapplicationsofthebrakeasthiscouldaccidentlyinduceparachutalorfullstalls.

YoumayuseBigearsforthefinallandingapproachbuttheyshouldbereleasedbeforemakingthefinalflare.Ozoneadvisetonotusethistechniqueinturbulentorwindyconditionsduetothereducedabilitytoflyactivelyandtheriskofaninadvertentstallwhilstdescendingthroughthewindgradient.

Oncethebigearsareengagedyoucanfurtherincreasethesinkratebypushingontheacceleratorbar,howeverNEVERtrytopulltheBigEarsiniftheacceleratorisalreadypushed.Thelowerangleofattackandtheactofdeflatingthetipscanleadtoamajordeflation.AlwaysmaketheBigEarsfirstandthenapplythespeedbar.

WhilstitispossibletoenteraspiraldivewhilstholdinginBigEars,thehighforcesappliedtothelowerlinescouldexceedthebreakingstrainofthelinesleadingtoequipmentfailure!

Ozone strongly recommend to NOT perform Spiral Dives with Big Ears engaged.

NEVER induce Big Ears in accelerated flight, this can lead to a major deflation. Always pull the Big Ears first and then apply the speed bar.

DO NOT perform spiral dives with Big Ears engaged.

B-Line StallTheB-linestallisforfastdescentsinemergencysituationsonly,itisfasterandsafertolosealtitudewithaspiraldivethanaB-stall.ToinitiatetheB-stall,keepthebrakesinyourhandandtakeholdofboththeBrisers,orplaceyourfingersbetweenthelinesabovethemaillons.AsyoupulltheB-linesdowntheairflowoverthewingisbrokenandthegliderlosesitsforwardspeedbutremainsopenwithareducedcord.Youcandescendataround6m/s.ToexittheB-stalltheB-risersshouldbereleasedsymmetricallyandinonesmooth,progressivemotion.Thegliderwillresumenormalforwardflightwithoutfurtherinput.Checkyouhaveforwardflightagainbeforeusingthebrakes.IfyoupulltoomuchB-linetheglidermayhorseshoeandmovearoundalot.Ifthisoccurs,slowlyreleasetheBlinesuntilthewingstabilisesorsimplyexittheBlinestallbyimmediatelyreleasetheBrisers.DonotattempttomaintainaBlinestallthatisnotstable.

Spiral DivesIfyouturnyourgliderinaseriesoftightening360’sitwillenteraspiraldive.Thiswillresultinrapidheightloss.Toinitiateaspiral,lookandleanintothedirectionyouwanttogo,thensmoothlypulldownontheinsidebrake.TheSpark2willfirstturnalmost360degreesbefore itdropsintothespiral.Onceinthespiralyoushouldre-centreyourweightshiftandapplyalittleoutsidebraketokeeptheouterwingtippressuredandinflated.

Safedescentratesofmorethan8m/s(1600ft/minapprox.)arepossibleinaspiraldive,butattheseratestheassociatedhighspeedsandG-forcescanbedisorientating.Alwayspayparticularattentiontoyouraltitude.Toexitthespiraldive,ensureyourweightshiftisinacentredpositionandthensmoothlyreleasetheinsidebrake.AstheSpark2deceleratesallowittocontinuetoturnuntilenoughenergyislostforittoreturntolevelflightwithoutanexcessiveclimbandsurge.

TheSpark2shows little tendency to remainneutral inaspiraldive;howeversomeparameterscouldinterferewithitsbehaviour.Thesemightinclude:wrongcheststrapsettings,totalweightinflightoutsideofthecertifiedweightrange,orbeinginaverydeepspiralataveryhighsinkrate>14m/s.Youshouldalwaysbepreparedtopilotthewingoutofsuchaspiraldive.Todoso,smoothlyuseoppositeweightshiftandapplyenoughoutsidebraketostopthewingfromspiralling,thegliderwillthenstarttoresumenormalflight.Neverattempttorecoverfromaspiralwithhardorquickoppositeinputsasthiswillresultinanaggressiveclimbandsurge.

IMPORTANTAlways be prepared to pilot the wing out of a spiral dive. Use opposite weight shift and apply enough outside brake to stop the wing from spiralling.

DeflationsDuetotheflexibleformofaparaglider,turbulencemaycauseaportionofthewingsuddenlytocollapse.Thiscanbeanythingfromasmall30%(asymmetric)collapsetoacomplete(symmetric)collapse.

Ifyouhaveacollapse,thefirstthingtodoistocontrolyourdirection.Youshouldflyawayfromthegroundorobstaclesandotherpilots.Asymmetriccollapsesshouldbecontrolledbyweightshiftingawayfromthecollapseandapplyingenoughbraketocontrolyourdirection.Thisactionalonewillbeenoughforafullrecoveryofthewingmostofthetime.

Onceagliderisdeflateditiseffectivelyasmallerwing,sothewingloadingandstallspeedarehigher.Thismeansthegliderwillspinorstallwithlessbrakeinputthannormal.Inyoureffortstostopthegliderturningtowardsthecollapsedsideofthewingyoumustbeverycarefulnottostallthesideofthewingthatisstillflying.Ifyouareunabletostopthegliderturningwithoutexceedingthestallpointthenallowtheglidertoturnwhilstyoureinflatethecollapse.

Ifyouhaveadeflationwhichdoesnotspontaneouslyreinflate,makealongsmoothprogressivepumponthedeflatedside.Thispumpingactionshouldtakeabout1-2secondsperpump.Pumpingtooshortandfastwillnotreinflatethewingandpumpingtooslowmighttaketheglidercloseto,orbeyond,thestallpoint.

Symmetricalcollapsesreinflatewithoutpilotinput,however15to20cmofbrakeappliedsymmetricallywillspeedtheprocess.Afterasymmetriccollapsealwaysconsideryourairspeed.Makesurethegliderisnotinparachutalstallbeforemakinganyfurtherinputs.

If your Spark 2 collapses in accelerated flight, immediately release the accelerator and manage thecollapseusingthesamemethodsdescribedabove.

WARNINGUncoordinated wingovers can lead to large asymmetric collapses and cravats, therefore they should never be executed near the ground.

CravatsIfthetipofyourwinggetsstuckinthelines,thisiscalleda‘cravat’.Thiscanmakeyourglidergointoaspiral,whichisdifficulttocontrol.Thefirstsolutiontogetoutofthissituationistostabilisethegliderintonormalflight,i.egetcontrolofyourdirectionandthenpulldownthestabiloline(BR4-outsidelineontheBriser)untilthewingtipclears.Youmustbecarefulwithanybrakeinputsoryoumaystalltheoppositewing.Youcanalsousestrongdeeppumpsofthebrakeonthecravatedside,whendoingsoitisimportanttoleanawayfromthecravatotherwiseyouriskspinningordeepeningthespiral.Theaimistoemptytheairoutofthewingtip,butwithoutspinning.Correctlydone,thisactionwillclearthecravat.

Ifitisaverylargecravatandtheaboveoptionshavenotworkedthenafullstallisanotheroption.Thisshouldnotbeattemptedunlessyouhavebeentaughthowtodoitandcanonlybedonewithalargeamountofaltitude.Rememberiftherotationisacceleratingandyouareunabletocontrolit,youshouldthrowyourreserveparachutewhilstyoustillhaveenoughaltitude.

Deep Stall / Parachutal StallIt is possible for gliders to enter a stateof parachutal stall. This canbecausedby several situationsincluding;averyslowreleasefromaB-linestall;flyingthegliderwhenwet;oraftera front/symmetricdeflation.Theglideroftenlooksasthoughithasrecoveredproperlybutcarriesondescendingverticallywithoutfullforwardmotion.Thissituationiscalled‘deepstall’or‘parachutalstall’.

ItisunlikelytohappenonanyOzoneglider,butshoulditdosoyourfirstreactionshouldbetofullyraisebothhands.ThisnormallyallowstheglidertoreturntonormalflightbutIfnothinghappensafterafewseconds,reachupandpushtheA-risersforwardsorapplythespeedbartoencouragethewingtoregainnormalflight.Ensure thegliderhas returned tonormalflight (checkyourairspeed)beforeyouuse thebrakesagain.

Donotflyinrain,doingsosignificantlyincreasesthelikelihoodofparachutalstallsoccurring.ToreducethechanceofstallinginrainavoidusingdeepbrakemovementsorBigEars.Findasafeareatolandandusingthespeedbar,maintainagoodairspeedatalltimes.

IMPORTANTA bad preparation on launch, aerobatic flying, flying a wing of too high a level or in conditions too strong for your ability, are the main causes of cravats.

PackingToprolongthelifeofyourwingandtokeeptheplasticreinforcementsinthebestpossibleconditionitisveryimportanttopackthewingcarefully.

Ozonerecommendstousetheconcertinapackingmethodexactlyasshownsothatallofthecellsrestalongsideeachotherandtheplasticreinforcementsarenotunnecessarilybent.Youcanhoweverusethetraditionalhalfandhalfmethod.UsinganOzoneSaucisseorSaucisselightpackwillhelppreservethelifeofthewingandaidwiththespeedandeaseofpacking.

Step 8.IfusingtheSaucissePack,carefullyzipitupwithouttrappinganymaterial.

Step 9.TurntheSaucisseonitssideandmakethefirstfoldjustaftertheLEreinforcements.Donotfoldtheplasticreinforcements,use3or4foldsaroundtheLE.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT lay the wing flat on the ground before packing the glider, this will cause abrasion damage to the top surface as you pull the glider towards the middle. ALWAYS pack from a mushroom or lift the wing off the ground when gathering the wing and grouping the leading edge.

IMPORTANT: Do not fold the glider in the centre, you will bend the plastics, instead pack the wing with a full concertina method from tip to tip before packing into the stuff sac.

•FLYINGinsaltyair, inareaswithabrasivesurfaces (sand,rocksetc.)andgroundhandling instrongwindswillacceleratetheagingprocess.

•DONOTflyintherainorexposethewingtomoisture.

•DONOTexposethewingtounnecessaryUV.Packawayonceyouhavefinishedflying.Donotleaveitsittinginthesun.

•DONOTexposethewingtoexcessiveheat.Allowthewingtocoolbeforestorage.

• Ifyouflywithawrap,youshouldregularlyundothetwistingthatappearsonthemainbrakelines.Bytwistingthelinebecomeshorterandyoucanendupwithaconstanttensiononthetrailingedge(whichcanleadtoproblemonlaunch,stalling,glidernotflyingsymmetrically,...)

•Changeyourmainbrakelinesiftheyaredamaged.

•BeCarefulwhengroundhandlingtonotsawthebrakelinesagainsttherisersormainlines.Theabrasioncausedbyasawingmotioncandamagethemainlinesandleadtoprematureageingoftherisers.Ifyounoticeanysignsofabrasion,especiallytothelines,makesureyougetthewingprofessionallyservicedandimportantlymodifyyourgroundhandlingtechniquetostopanyfurtherdamage.

•YourOzonewinghasanopeningclosedusingVelcroonthetrailingedgeofthetipcalledthe‘Butthole’.Thishasbeendesignedtoeasilyemptyallthethingswhichhavebeenaccumulatinginyourwing(sand,leaves,rocks,mobilephonesetc).

Storage and TransportAlwaysstoreallyourflyingequipmentinadry,coolroomprotectedfromanysourceofexcessiveheat.Yourwingshouldbedryandcoolbeforebeingpackedaway.Moisture,heatandhumidityaretheworstelementsfordamagingthefibresandcoatingofthecloth.Storingadampgliderinyourcarunderthesunwouldbeterribleforexample.

Ifyoulandinsaltwater,youmustfirstrinseitthoroughlywithcleanfreshwater.Drythewingcompletely,preferablyoutofthesun,inthewind.Neveruseahairdryer,etc.

Takecarethatnoinsectsgetpackedawaywiththewing.Theymayeattheclothandmakeholesinabidtoescape.Theycanalsoleaveacidicdepositsiftheydieanddecompose.

Transportthewinginthesuppliedbagsandkeepawayfromoils,paints,chemicals,detergentsetc.

CleaningAnykindofwiping/scratchingcandamagethecoatingofthecloth.Werecommendtonotcleanthewing,butifyoudohaveto,useasoftclothdampenedwithasmallamountofwaterandusegentlemovementslittlebylittleacrossthesurface.Remembermoistureandabrasiondamagesthecoatingofthecloth.

RepairsAlways let a registered dealer, professional repair centre or themanufacturer carry out anymajor orcomplexrepairs,especiallythosenearseammargins.

If you damage the sail:Iftheripissmallandinthemiddleofapanelyoucanfixityourself.You’llfindallthematerialsintherepairkityouneed.Thefabriccanbesimplymendedwiththestickyripstop/spinnakertape.Whencuttingoutthepatchesallowampleoverlapofthetearandmakesurebothsidesaredifferentsizes.Makesuretoroundoffeachcornerofthepatches.

Maintenance Checks Inaddition to thenormaldailyandpreflightchecks, it is recommended toservice thewing regularly,especiallyafteraheavyperiodofuse,afteranincidentorafteralongperiodofstorage.Youaloneareresponsibleforyourflyingkitandyoursafetydependsonit.Changesininflation/groundhandling/flyingbehaviourindicatestheglidersaging,ifyounoticeanychangesyoushouldhavethewingcheckedbeforeflyingagain.

Toensureproperairworthinessyourwingneedstobetechnicallyservicedbyanexperiencedprofessionalfor thefirst timeafter24months,orafter100hours.However, if thewing isused frequently thenwerecommendanannualservice.Theservicecentreshouldperforma thorough inspectionofyourwingandinformyouoftheconditionofthesail,risersandlinesandwhetheranypartsneedtobecheckedorchangedbeforethenextnormalserviceperiod.

Thesailandthelinesdonotageinthesamewayoratthesamerate;itispossiblethatyoumayhavetochangepartorallofthelinesduringthewing’slife.Forthisreasonitisimportanttodoregularinspectionssothatyouknowtheexactconditionofallofthecomponentsofyourglider.

Line strength-Anupper,middleandlowerAline,alongwithalowerBandalowerC(andlowerDifapplicable)lineshouldbetestedforstrength.Eachlineistestedtobreakingpointandthevaluerecorded.Theminimumvalueis14Gforalllines,calculatedfromthemaximumcertifiedflyingweightoftheglider.Theaddedminimumstrengthforthemiddlelinesandforthetoplinesshouldbethesame.Ifthebreakingstrengthistooclosetotheminimumvaluecalculated,theprofessionalshouldgiveaperiodafterwhichyouwillhavetotestthestrengthofthelinesagain.

Complianceof the testsample’ssuspension lines,brake linesandriserswerecheckedby the testinglaboratoryafterthetestflightswerecompleted.

Line strength-Theoveralllength(riserlines+midlines+upperlines)hastobecheckedunder5Kgsoftension.Thedifferencebetweenthemeasuredlengthandtheoriginallengthshouldnotexceed+/-10mm.ThechangesthatcouldappearareaslightshrinkontheCorDsand/oraslightstretchontheA,B.Theconsequencesofthesechangescanincludeaslowertrimspeed,difficultinflationetc.
