The IAEA Water Availability Enhancement Project is expected to assist Member States in achieving not only greater availability of water resources, but in achieving increased understanding of the vulnerability and sustainability of the resource.

The IAEA Water Availability Enhancement Project is an initiative of the IAEA Water Resources Programme carried out in cooperation with Member States and partners
TheobjectiveoftheIAEAWaterAvailabilityEnhancement(IWAVE)Projectistoenhance
wateravailabilityandsustainabilityinparticipatingMemberStatesasaresultofcomprehensiveassessmentandmanagementoftheirnationalwaterresources.ThroughthecourseofaprojecttheIAEAworkswithMemberStateexperts,andregionalandinternationalpartners,toidentifyandthenfillgapsinhydrological
informationandunderstandingwhichlimitcomprehensivenationalwater-resourcesassessmentsandmanagement.Conductingwater-resourcesassessmentsremainsanationalundertaking;anIWAVEProjecthoweverwillcontributetonewandaccuratehydrologicaldataandinformationintheareasofwaterquality,quantity,anduse,aswellasresourcevulnerabilityandsustainability.
The IAEA Water Availability Enhancement Project is currently conducting pilot studies with selected Member States. Each pilot study will result in a Hydrological Gap Plan outlining:
Theexpert,technological,infrastructure,andtrainingsupportthatwillcollectivelybuildthenationaltechnologicalcapacitytofilltheidentifiedgapsinhydrologicalinformationandunderstanding,
Thesourceswhichcanprovidetheexpert,technological,infrastructure,andtrainingsupport,and
Themeansforobtainingtheexpert,technological,infrastructure,andtrainingsupport,through:
NATIONALINITIATIVES—Newandon-goingnationalinitiativesthatcouldbeutilizedinaddressingidentifiedgaps
DIRECTTECHNICALSUPPORT—availablefromtheIAEAWaterResourceProgrammeandPartners
FUNDEDSUPPORT—specificproposalsdirectedatappropriatebilateralandmultilateralfundingsourcestodevelopbankableprojects
The IAEA Water Resources Programme will provideproject coordination and implementationfor each IAEA Water Availability Enhancement pilot study.
